I've belonged to a club for a lot of years, somewhere around 30 I guess. Have entered maybe half a dozen hunts in all that time and never at the club I belong to. Started going with my dad and helping with his dogs in the field trails and water races and before long had some of my own and joined the club. I still go for the same reason and along the way discovered I liked to show dogs. I grew up with dogs and coon hunting along with the other stuff but never really cared about hunting most every night so to this day I seldom have a good finished dog just to hunt. They take up space and feed I need for the other things I enjoy more. I hunt and understand it, at least the dogs, but my standards are way lower than whats in the rule book.
Back to the club. I need my club to train and condition my dogs at for those field trials & water races I enjoy and also to hold those events so I've got competition to go to. I still show dogs locally some but not as often cause I guess I got too good at it but all dogs aren't national level and the club still needs entries to pay the bills. The clubs and state associations do so much for everybody that most don't even know about.
Years ago a local guy named Sarge told me he didn't know where a guy could buy more work to do for $25 a year than by joining a coon club. He was 100% right and he still did it because somebody has to.

A third hunt I was cussed and threatened because I refused to vote to circle a tree because he claimed it was touching a hemlock tree and voted it to be minused.

Oddly enough....3 weeks later, I was told by the MOH that the tree was scored as a circle after all.

Both times I appealed and WON, and all 3 times there was a spectator along with me who decided to never get into comp. hunting because of what he witnessed on those hunts.

im not saying every hunt is the definition of sportsmanship & its prolly not for everyone but if we just cry about bad hunts there wont be any newcomers & that will weaken our sport &most hunts ive been on have for the most part have been enjoyable

I like both pleasure hunting & comp hunting if I have a hound that is worthy, I think it would be nice for local clubs to hold a couple of buddy hunts or non scoring events just to get something going for the pleasure hunters and comp hunters to have some fun and give the pleasure hunters opportunity to see how the rules are, and see if their dog compare with the comp hounds, a lot of pleasure hunters under estimate the hounds they have and would be surprised how good they would be. And as far as whining and cheating I went as a spectator at a club here in East Tn, and the dogs split in a champion cast one spectator went with one guy and the guy came back to the cast and said it was a opossum that scratched him. Not to many people would believe that but it happened, that is an honest man and we had the most fun on that cast no arguing met some good folks there look forward to going again.

I don’t belong to any club but it’s not for a lack of trying I contacted the closest one I could find and tracked the secretary down called him and inquired about joining the club. I wanted to get active in the club his reply was watch CHBL magazine and show up to the hunt, I asked about membership and he said nobody really joins they show up to the hunts. All of this puzzles me a bit because if there is no membership then there is no fellowship, how do people expect anything to change when they don’t put in any effort to help bring change. I would like to join a club to support it and the community. If all we are going to worry about is winning a title for our dog and not the friendship of the people we are with then I think there is no difference between that and the individuals that don’t show up or make excuses not to come. I also would like to say I read a lot of post and have heard a lot of stories about crybabies, cheats and liars but if everyone let those individuals stop them from doing something then nothing would get done in this world, it’s not about what they do it’s how we deal with what they do that makes or breaks us. Boys that’s my two cents, thanks for letting me vent.

i belonged to a club for awhile and went to all the meetings. i brought it up every meeting how we need to do more for the youth to get them more active in our sport. all the club was worried about was making money so i stopped waisting my time going. AND EVERYONE WONDERS WHY OUR SPORT IS DYING!!!!!

I HUNT TO ENJOY MY HOUNDS & TRY TO MAKE THEM BETTER AT WHAT THEY ARE BREED TO DO. WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET IN A CLUB WHERE IT WAS FUN TO EVERYONE THERE, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS THAT 1 IN EVER CROWD. I MOST OF THE TIME HAVE A NICE DOG, WONT FEED JUNK. IF I WAS ABLE TO FIND THIS KIND OF GROUP OF HUNTERS, I WORRY ABOUT MY DOG RUNNING OUT IN FRONT OF A CAR, THAT IS WHAT I AM AFRAID OF MORE THAN A ROUGH DOG, WONT HAVE A MEAN DOG, PLUS, I WONT HAVE 1 THAT WONT GET HIS PART. IF YOUR DOG BEATS MY DOG, I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY SO, BUT WHEN OLE CHOPPER, SOUNDS LIKE HE IS HUNG IN A FENCE, I AM GOING TO SAY TREE, OLE CHOPPER,LOL. LOVE TO HUNT WITH GOOD PEOPLE, THEY ARE HARD TO FIND, SO I WILL KEEP HUNTEN ALONE. THANKS FOR READING, HAPPY HUNTEN, HAPPY NEW YEAR, THANKS, MARTY...........

Harry,
Maybe if we could come up with a nontitled dog cast (reg. or grade) for new hunters especially youth wanting to get in the comp game or for the ole timers that just want to pleasure hunt and have some fun.Put non huntining judge on the cast to mentoir the young and the old.Club could charge flat $10.00 entry fee per dog for these cast.Run under what ever kc rules the santioned hunt is.Give the cast winner a win slip stating that this hunter won a nontitled dog cast in either a Missouri statehunt or Missouri Federation hunt. After winning five cast on their dog the State or Federation could issue a(a computer generated) Certificate of Coon Hound and Handling. This might help the new people to the sport of competing. And also guarantee them a fair shake on the judging of there first few cast.I know the belly achers are going to say thats one more judge we have to comeup with,so what, it might bring six or nine more hunters to your hunts also. This would at least give somone new to our sport a good experiance to begin with. Instead of being told you have to pay your dues son!! Which I have heard way to many times from older hunters to the younger hunters then they wonder why there is no youth wanting to participate, and club membership is dwindling. This idea is really nothing but an apprentice type program. To try and keep bad experiences from happening to the new hunters and also keep the ole Pro's from having to babysit a cast every time they draw a cast.

I have joined and visited more coon clubs than the average hunter in the past years and I have never once seen any program designed to attract pleasure hunters that was a success. They all started with a bang and just ran out of steam.
I've seen all kinds of effort from $3.00 club hunts after club meetings to "challenge hunts" after meetings and everything crashed.
I want to do something for the young, old and pleasure hunters of Missouri so keep sending in your ideas please.
The HTX sounds good but when you try to line it up everybody steps back. I know some clubs in Missouri that would hold them but I'm afraid they would die out like most ideas.
If your from Missouri and would participate in the HTX hunts sound off.

Good idea Harry& al

Have a pleasure cast, open to a matures, and pleasure hunters, award pleasure points, at the end of each year have a prize to award the pleasure hunter that won the most cast that year, it gives them something to come back for each hunt and trains the a matures, specific rules, must hunt your hounds, have a single registry photo pleasure hound, be a club member, with less than 1 y&r exp. Handling dogs in that club. This wouldn't be much more work on the club. Keep pleasure hunters board updated at the hunt and it wouldn't take 10 min. To take a photo and fill out the card on the dog.

I did Buddy hunts out of the store last year and had strong turn outs every time. The most we hunted was 25 dogs.
It didn't matter if you had a registered dog or a grade dog. If it was a German Shepard and could tree a coon, he could hunt .
Entry fee was $10.00 and paid back the top 2 cast winners.
We had a great time doing it and had a lot of kid participate. The first 2 hunts a kid won and took home almost $150.00 bucks.

If you came and hunted with us, you could bet on 3 things.
Great Food, Great Fellowship and a Great Hunt.

We were not a club, but the ones that hunted were asked how they wanted to do things and their input counted. They wanted to try a points system for a kennel club so we tried ACHA. We tried it, it didn't work, so we move on. We'll go back to our buddy hunts after the first of the year and go from there.

Some people thought that paying money back was a bad thing and wouldn't support the hunts. They said it would bring out the crooks and cheaters.
If you came to our hunt, run your mouth, started trouble, and was a known disruptor, you didn't hunt with us and was asked to leave . No Fussin or Cussin.

We need hunts were its dog against dog not handler against handler.

I'd be in and would drive a ways to a HTX hunt....My nearest clubs are Clay/Ray Coonhunters in Excelsior Springs MO. and Jowler Creek Coonhunters in Camden Point MO.

Mr Jameson,
I've got your number and I will be in touch with you this spring. I'll talk to a couple clubs at the State meeting next month and will try to set something up.
Thank you for your response and watch another thread on here titled "The Missouri Coonhunter". I know the State Coon Hunters will be posting on that thread and hopefully the Federation will participate.
Anybody else interested in HTX hunts in Missouri?
Thanks again.

Harry, we have talked about doing a HTX at Crawford County Coon Club in Bourbon, but haven't got any farther than discussing it yet. It seems like there is a lack of interest by people all over the country from what I am reading on this message board and I don't know if it's a lack of interest in the HTX format, or if it's just a lack of interest in trying something new. I would definitely participate in one of these events and give them a try. We do have some people interested in doing the HTX hunts at Bourbon and I'm sure that we will further discuss putting on some of these hunts for the upcoming year at our next meeting. I will see you all at the State meeting in Sullivan.
