-- Missouri coon hunters poll? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=393011)

Posted by John D on 12-21-2010 03:40 PM:

I'm a current, and past member, of the Fed. and been a past member of the State. I've basically joined when I was hunting towards something in one of their programs.

I belong to the Holden Club (Johnson County Coonhunters Assoc.)

We need to get some new faces to show up. Maybe they'll have a different out look on the situation at hand

Cross posting this from the other thread.

Right off the top of my head I can think of at least a half a dozen pleasure hunters in my area that have never been to a competition hunt. Three of which are pretty hard hunters. Until the beginning of this year, I had never entered a dog in a comp hunt and I would say that the reasons why I had pleasure hunted fairly hard for many years and never entered a hunt are probably the same for many pleasure hunters that haven't even given comp hunts a chance. First off is of course the horror stories about comp hunts, that every pleasure hunter hears and spreads, and you know I went to several hunts this year and can honestly say that I haven't been able to spread any more bad horror stories since. So maybe the State Coonhunters could put on a myth busters hunt, and if everyone invited the local pleasure hunters they know, you could be looking at a good number of new members to the state and local clubs if a small portion of them joined. The other thing that always held me up is a lot of pleasure hunters own grade dogs, so maybe some kind of intro to coonhunting where they could bring their grade dogs and go out with some hunters who are experienced in competition hunting, learn then in's and out's of the sport and maybe blow out some of the myths about those horrible competition dogs. You may not see an immediate jump in membership, but you just might spark some interest, and see them later on down the road.

The situation I'm talking about is lack of interest in the state, which leads to lack of participation in the state events.

We need to ask people that used to hunt in the state events why they quit attending and what will bring them back.

We need to ask new people what we can do to attract them.

Instead of making blind changes hoping for a turn around, because what ever we are doing now aint working at all.!!!!!!

One thing I can see that would help, and other people have told me this as well. I think we should give more prizes that save people money now not later. Like dog feed, cash, heck even whole corn, and coon candy would be a good prize.

I know I'd rather have $150.00 worth of feed than a new light that I might be able to sell for $150.00 in a month or so and will never use personally.

I know I'd rather win $400.00 cash than a dog box that nobody can afford to buy from me, and I don't need or want cause I like the one I have better.

Maybe I'm just different, but seems to me that an aweful lot of people are telling me the same things. Also is seems to be working well for the federation. I mean look at the final hunt last year, they quit taking entries at 80 dogs.

Josh has an awesome point about the local guys that I never really thought about. I can think of 6 or 8 myself.

I know one fella that has told me that he aint letting his two boys go to a comp hunt with me cause of all the fighting, arguing, and so on and he don't want them around it.

I'm pretty sure the dad has never been to a comp hunt in his life, but he has heard enough at the barber shop and coffee shop to prevent to young boys from getting into the sport.

This is why I made the new thread on here to so people can post new ideas and what they like and dislike about our assn. I think we have come a long way in the last year with our prizes. I won the Missouri State Championship in 06 and got a ha,t ya a hat. This year with the hog raffels and stuff we did we were able to give away a dog box 2 lights and dog feed. So I think we are heading in the right direction. As far as giving money I would love to but this has been shot down in the past. But we can always try it again. One thing I would like to see is more clubs north of I 70. I hear all the time "why are all the state hunts down south"well its because we dont have any clubs up north to hold these hunts. . I dont know if I will be president in 2011 but this is one thing I would like to work on.

I'll search for the other thread. I didn't know it was here. I'd say that this is going to be an exciting meeting.

I still say we need some of the people to show up that used to hunt in the state hunts so we can ask them what they think would change things and bring people back.

I hate hearing this as bad as anybody, but with the economy down people need a little incentive to show up.

Take the Govenors Cup

What would be better $200.00+ cash or a dog box . Out of all the trucks that were there I only know of one that didn't have a dog box in it, an dI would imagine he would have even liked the cash better.

Heck I can take that $200.00+ and almost pay for my trip to get my picture taken if I won.

I don't know what it will take, but I will say this the State CHA will either figure it out or die trying cause aint gonna give up no matter what.

I think you guys are headin in the rite direction!Wormy has worked his tail off to make our state assoc better, and he has made major improvements on it.I agree with the fact that we need to get more clubs north of 70 involved. One of the hunts i no alot of us would love to see brought back is the state jubilee hunt, where the first round is broke into breeds, then the top four scores go out for the final.this hunt was held in Desoto for years and always drew a big crowd.I also dont like the idea of cash being what we are hunting for, that seems to always cause problems!!!If people want to hunt for cash hunt pkc.
