Fact of the matter is if you want to bring the dogs into the house to make you feel better than do it, but biologically it is not necessary.
.
I think half of you guys missed the question. The question was not "do you think the cold weather would kill a dog?", it was "do you think bringing a dog in during below average temps and then taking him back out the next day would kill a dog?!"
We are experiencing unseasonably cold temps here, and while my houses are good with plenty of bedding, I am still bringing mine in even though I think he could probably handle it.
The only thing that scares me is hearing about those dogs I mentioned earlier being found dead.
Don't you guys remember long about this time last year during a severe cold snap all those guys posting about finding dogs dead?
I am not saying they had crappie houses or poor bedding, but isnt it strange that all those dogs died during that same period, right when most of the country had a really bad cold spell.
That does not mean EVERY dog is going to die, but some certantly could.
I understood the question. Although I can't speak in absolute terms saying all dogs would be ok doing this i've let 3 or 4 different dogs sleep in the house and chained them back outside the next morning and it didn't seem to affect them at all.

if you have a real old hound you might want to keep a close eye on them but as about everybody on here agrees that if you keep them in good boxes and make sure they have plenty dry straw in thier boxes good feed and water they gonna be alright like i say i soak my feed in hot water so they have something warm in thier belly for the night some times i heat beef broth up and pour over there feed but thats me everbody has thier own opion

Cold won't kill a dog and nor will bringing it in the house at night. Years ago I had three beagles. Two lived outside and one was my buddy and lived inside by the wood stove. Typical weekend in winter was 15 degrees, deep snow and a few hours running cottontails until the four of us were so tired and cold we could hardly drag ourselves back to the jeep. Those pups collars would be ringed with solid ice buildup and chucks of ice and snow between their toes and frost and snow balls hanging from their bellies. When we'd get back home i'd rub the ice off all of them, feed them and two would go back to their cold houses and one would curl up by the fire. All lived long lives, AND WERE HAPPY. Why aren't you guys?

I told a fellow hunter that I was going to bring my dog in during these single digit temps and he said the most silliest thing I think I have ever heard. He said if I was not careful that I would KILL the dog. Who else thinks this is rediculous? Not only has it been cold but the wind has been howling too.
I am sure bringing the dog in at say 7pm when it is 12 degrees and then taking it back out at midnite when it is 5 degrees would be pretty stupid but who in their right mind would do that?
Does anyone on here agree with him?
I know of 7 puppies, one mama dog, one 5 year old beardog, one 10 year old walker, and one three month old dog that has died in the past five days and I do not think that this is a coincidence! The folks whom these dogs belong to will go to their graves swearing there is no way these dogs froze to death because of the quality of their houses and bedding!
As for me, I am not taking a chance!

this is what i know, my family have raised dogs for years, dachshunds, brittany's, pug's, all akc and shown. the bird dogs were out, but were brought in. yes, there is a risk of pneumonia in dogs, in and out. you take the chance. either in or out til the weather breaks.
most people that reply to this are the one's asking you about parvo and how to cure it with clorox. point made.
it will come down to your best judgement. i am personally glad i brought mine in til the weather breaks. spring. til then, you will have the dogs you want to hunt with and a good mind set you did the right thing for you and yours. that is all that counts.
remember one thing, cant keep the carpet new forever or keep the plastic on the furniture, eventually, no matter what, it will be used and have to be replaced, hopefully, long before your dog.

intellectualist, I got to thinking. Over near my folks house, their building a new high school. Weather here has dropped down to teens and low 20's at night.
Come day light, you see those guys on the contruction site hammering away all day after spending a warm night in a warm bed in a warm house.
If we humans can do it, you know dogs can do it.

give me a break buckshot, us humans have a choice when we eat, pi**, and shII. what we eat etc...... you are going to tell me the corn meal supplement that we buy, lord knows that's what coyotes and wolves eat in the wild, will keep them through the night in - 0 degrees. or even 15 with a windchill. good boxes help, but sh(( will happen when that wind comes a whippin. no doubt in my mind.
when you put a dog on a chain and say, ok, i am going to do everything to help you cause i put you on the chain and i know best, we all know what happens after that, these questions . cause sometimes, we dont know what is best. cause we arent canine.

quote:We already had a day here on this site recently where at one time there were three threads dedicated to "lost a good one last night". Now one of those three was a 14 or 15 year old dog, but if I remember right two of them were just 9 or 10.

I agree. Simply because a dog is much tougher than me!
I know this is off topic relative to the question I asked, but does anyone besides me remember the incidents that happened last year when all those folks were on this forum posting about how they went and found their dogs dead during the time that severe cold spell hit the country? Anybody? Did I just dream all of that stuff?
Does anyone find that coincidental?
