i think alot of this problem stems from guys not wanting to correct a hound around a coon or a tree

several good suggestions here and some real bologna!!!!!

bottom line, on most threads concerning a behaviour pattern is the dog doesnt know who the boss is, and let a dog get away with somethin a couple times and it can quickly form into a habit.

the blowing in dogs ear does work to get dog off coon but i dont do that any more. back several years ago when fur was high my buddy & me was about 3 shades in the wind. he went to blow in dogs ear to make her let go of the coon. coon floped up & bit him by the lip !!
i dont know if its dangerous only when drinking or any time. i never done that again after seeing that !! LOL

You have to treat a dog like a dog, so the best thing to do is get down on your hands and knees and grab the coon in your mouth and start pulling with your teeth. You can growl and tug real hard too. At this point the dog should know that you're the Pack Leader and it'll let go if it know whats good. If the coon is still alive, be sure you let the dog hold onto the biting end. You can bite on the non-biting end so you wont get the rabies.

If the tug of war goes on past 20 minutes or so, you keep the coon in your mouth but move to the side and mount the dog. Be sure to keep your pants on and dont take them off. If you're already not wearing any pants, have a friend or helper get you a pair of pants to put on, or you can borrow theirs until you're done training. Mounting the dog gets your point across that you're the boss not them....seen wolves do it on animal shows before.

If you just want to know how to get the coon out of his mouth , but don't care if your dog is the boss .... then that is easier ... just do like the bulldoggers do to get pitbull unhooked.

Take a hammer handle looking stick and get it in the corner of his mouth and down his throat a little ... do not pry .. trip his gag reflex and he'll spit the coon out .

The are called breaking sticks ... and folks just assume you break a dog's hold but that is totally wrong ... all you gotta do is make him gag ... thus "breaking" the two dogs apart .. not breaking the dogs jaw .

That's not entirely true, atleast not in my experience. I used a cheap white cutting board from the dollar store. Cut it out about 2 1/2 inches wide, beveled one end, and cut to length. Insert on the back molars, and start twisting the break stick. The gag reflex may have helped, but I assure you a good catch dog will take some prying to get it to turn loose. It will work on a coondog if you choose to go that route.

Exactly ... alot of folks use an oval board or stick to twist or pry ... but that isn't the right way ...

I bet money you wouldn't have broke my bulldogs by just a gag reflex.

I forgot to add, I strattled the dog I was breaking so he couldn't whip around and get me in the moment. And put your knees into it's side- doesn't have to be hard, to help hold him still.

You can also squeeze a dog's front paw and if do it in the right spot, the dog cannot maintain the jaw pressure and will drop the coon. Have seen it work with several dogs in the past. Now I don't wrestle with them, I just make sure that they understand what "dead" means and that the coon is "mine".

They are dog's out there that blowing in the ear WON'T work with. Put the Tri Tronic's on his neck and once the coon is dead bump him and say dead coon. After a few times of this he should be smart enough to figure it out.

As far as letting the dog carry it out of the woods. We use to let my old Dolly female carry them back to the truck all the time. When you noticed she was walking faster you just stopped and she'd go back and pick it up again. I saw her carry a pretty good sized coon to the truck from over a mile one night.

I gotta agree Hobo,if ya gotta do it more than once it's a pretty stupid dog. As for aggression when ya grab him, my dog bites or attempts to bite me he ain't going home. That can be cured for the most part when they're pups at the chow dish too. A hound should learn that nothing in this world is his, unless you say so.

That's pretty good but time the coon is dead is when the dogfight starts. He might turn out to be pack leader. LOL

True! The fittest will survive! That's how you select your breeding stock for tree holding power!
