Alot of it has to do with the condition and quality of firearm you are using along with the user and his/her aim. If there is powder, lead and rust build up in your barrel it greatly effects the perfomance of both rifle and ammo. A firearms rifling has a great deal to do with the ammo's effectivness. Aim and where you hit the target has alot to do with it also. How many actually try for a head shot rather than aiming at the whole coon? Shooting a coon in the backside takes more shots to bring one down than a head or lung shot will. How many actually take the time to target pratice and check the setting of there sights or scope. A coon hunting gun takes more abuse than any other hunting I know of.

It's not just like target practice coon hunting. Lots of time the coon is not giving you an ideal shot. Sometimes you don't see much but the eyes. Maybe less than that. You ever been coon hunting? Yes I do my work with the sighting in , keeping the gun clean etc. but it doesn't mean I hit the eye with each and every shot.

When I'm hunting I use either stingers or velocitors both by CCI as I belive in a quick clean kill.

Its hard to find em but this one store in grampian, pa near our deer camp always has em so i bought 2 bricks of them...so I guess just keep lookin around. Actually I think its an Army/Navy store....

i have been using mi .17 hmr savage and using cci tnt ammo works great one shot one kill. entry hole thats it, fragments in the head. i have had to much trouble with 22 shells taking more than one shot to the head and having duds. cci 22 ammo is good but i think i am going to stick with my 17

Best 22 shells

I use an Anshutz rifle and Remington Sub-Sonic's! Great for use around pups. They do not make alot of noise and bring em out dead..........Best of all the bullets dont zing all over the country if ya hit a branch or something.

I buy a brick or box of rem hollow points, cheap when on sale.500 rounds last a couple years and shoot great out of my old Marlin which I cleaned once in the last ten years. It is worse than a beater gun and I abuse it most nights. Hollow points take the fight out of most coon,I hate it when my dogs ears get sliced open, bleed like a stuck hog.

I went to a 22 mag. about 5 yrs. ago. Kind of ammo doesn't matter and a dead coon.

22 mag winchester supreme HP. Dead coon.

Steve,

Try aiming for the base of the ear instead of the eye ... well unless that is all ya can see. The shape of the head makes a shot at an eye a very small area. The base of the ear is still small, but it is a little more forgiving. Try it if you get the chance ... I believe you will like it.

KEEP SHOOTEN

IF YOU ARE AS GOOD A SHOT AS ME , YOU JUST AIM AT THE COON AND KEEP SHOOTEN TILL IT FALLS OUT, OR HAS A HEART ATTACK...L.O.L.

Stingers, I bought enough to last ten years. Does make skinning around the head a little messy though, but they ain't going nowhere.

cci stingers

cci stingers. i get them at farm & fleet or big R stores here in this part of illinois. haven't had to buy any in a couple years now. usually takes no more than 2 shots. ( first one is sometimes a practice/warmup shot). they do make a mess of the location on the coon where they impact. i think they're a money saver in the long run....since i switched to them i've used alot less ammunition.

I use this if I want to lug a rifle along. I don't have to empty my magazine to bring one down. You can sit on your butt and wrap the sling around your arm to hold it steady. Just CCI .22 long rifles is all it takes!

The Marlin model 60. Nice rifle. I got an anniversary one for Christmas when I was 18. It doesn't get beaten through the woods.

Like the one fella said about the gun, condition, and cleanliness. Pistol VS Rifle makes an ENORMOUS difference in the punch of the ammo. I used CCI stingers in my Mark 2, but did just fine with the Federal 550 packs out of the rifle. Longer barrel = higher velocity. Your ammo doesn't go bang, and it's done. It continues to burn from primer to bullet, and burns residual powder. This causes a longer period of push that a longer barrel can put to use.

The only thing I don't like about the bulk Remington is that I have had several duds...

TULLY

I THINK YOU WILL FIND THE MUSSLE VELOCITY IS THE SAME PISTOL & RIFLE....AND FPS , FEET PER SECOND...[EXP... CCI MINI-MAG 1235 FPS IT STAYS THE SAME PISTOL & RIFLE ] THE LENGTH OF THE BARRAL BETWEEN THE PISTOL & RIFLE MAKES FOR BETTER ACCCURATECY.. MORE TWIST MORE SPIN MORE ACCURATE
