you dont train a dog to track and you dont train one to tree.
you expose them to coon to bring out the bred in instincts to track and tree bark for what ever it wants bad enough..
whether it be with another dog or what ever method you use.
once a pup will try from the pre exposer to the coon to try to follow the scent it should be hunted alone. thats how they learn.
it is a long road from puppy to broke fininshed coondog.
**once you put the work in to get one to the point of a finished dog and it was bred right and handled right to finish into a decent dog you will understand why people dont give them away and they have real price tags.
myself i would not be hunting a $500 trade dog, much less putting my pup with it.
i learned a long time ago that a guy will wear out a truck and try many dogs before he finds the dog he is satisfied with no matter what your billfold holds.
let your eyes be the judge and your billfold be your guide.

Dogs can't train other dogs .... that is just silly .

You good young dog won't run slower just because he doesn't want to outrun a slow dog that you hunt with .... if a dog is hanging behind an older dog ... it's ebcause he's trailing the dog or doing something retarded like that....

If you don't want to put in the work to train a pup or don't know how ... DON'T BUY A PUP !!! Sure as heck don't buy the pup and then ask how to train it or start looking for a pup trainer .

Look into training and hunt with other guys that can train pups first .... buy a coondog , traps or whatever first ... then get a pup !

You are in a mess ... there is no easy way out ... no cheap way out and nobody can help you if you don't help yourself .... and that is the way it should be .

If you have a good bred pup that shows potential ... your best bet might be to give someone part ownership that has more experience with pups and they'd help you ....

... just as much as folks think dogs are high .... how come folks think they should bring their pups with you hunting or ask you for help and you should do it for free like you owe a beginner something ?

Whats wrong with helpin someone out? I guess I'd rather let someone come hunt with me and bring a pup along, instead of being a complete a$$ hole and telling them to get lost..... if your dog is already a coondog whats it matter if a pup is running around with it? Older dogs might not be training the younger one but its exposing the pup to the woods at night with other dogs out there and its testing your older dog to see if it can hold the pressure of a young dog messing around, JMO. I like watching pups learn on their own, but its also nice to see your pup possibly split off from the other dog and show what its capable of.

Lizz you just have to have fun with it, if your not having fun out in the woods with your pup then what is the point of coonhunting!

they have to start themselves around here. Couple of drags, a caged coon then put them in thick coon where they'll find a hot track. If they are going to do it at all they'll live into their natural desire and run and tree one.

And anyway.. I would think a beautiful young lady such as yourself would be better suited for modeling or something rather than wasting her time getting all muddy and nicked up by briars and things chasing coon dogs. Let the Redbone Chick train the pup for you. Coon dog training is hard work! I'm serious!

Ok i am working with 9 10 month old pup now i run him with my old dog rite now. he gets to chew on two three more. the we will play some hide and seek for two nights. the he be on his own 2 ta 3 nights a week. this worked grate with the dog i run him with. he is real fast when he opens he will be treed in less than 3 min every time. now we got a lot of nigts wit no coon starting him out but with a lot of talking him up and giving him every one he got durning season when he was alone and not leting him even get near one another dog treed first has seemed to make him go fast hard and hunt on his own.

because thats what a fellow hunter should do

let me guess when you started out you did it all by yourself and had nobodys help i had help when i started out i also bought dogs that people said where something and where not
i tryed to listen to every piece of advice that was givin

lizz if that male dog you have can tree a coon then hunt him if the pup goes with him for 5 mins hes learning something take small steps training a pup is not easy is very time consuming and down right agravating

It's not all that far fetched for someone to go hunting with others , get an idea of how to train pups , buy their equipment and maybe get a started dog BEFORE jumpin in feet first with a pup and not being able to take care of their own business ....

... maybe some of yall are still on the tit though and that sounds too harsh ...

Posted by fatboy77 on 11-26-2010 11:51 PM:

nope but why should you feel that your to good to help some one for free and think your worth being paid for it
cause i dont think someone tagging along is worth charging for

and as far as your remark about being on the titt justin smith you sir get the BONER AWARD

If I call you up and ask to train your dog for you ... I won't charge .

In the history of coonhunting ... that has probably never happened ... 99.9% of the time it's someone that NEEDS something wanting others to help for FREE ...

.... God helps those who help themselves ... and I don't wanna step in front of the big guy .

Posted by Epson on 11-27-2010 02:45 AM:

wow so anyone who helps out another is still on the tit..... thats quite pathetic.... How did you get into hunting Justin? did someone sell you a started dog or what? cause if they did..... that right there is helping you out and there for they must still be on the tit.... must not have a dog good enough to let anyone tag along and see what it really is.....

Posted by Justin Smith on 11-27-2010 03:51 AM:

Anyone that gets a dog first ... and then scrambles to figure out to train it afterwards ... has not thought it out first and once you are in that boat .... you may have to learn the hard way ... simple as that ...

Posted by fatboy77 on 11-27-2010 04:21 AM:

Why do you care what I think or say ?

I don't think it's too much to hope that every generation build on what the previous one has learned ... instead of starting from scratch every time and not listening.

If you go to mechanic school ... they don't hand you a rock and chisle and tell you to invent the wheel ... you learn from the past and start out trying to take technology further ....

.... if folks don't want to follow that logic with coonhunting , that's fine ..but , it's a shame and a waste ....

... that is just my way of thinking , I'm not asking anyone to like it or agree with it .... and getting banned for cussing at me on a message board because it hurts your feelings so bad won't impress me enough to make me think I am wrong ....

Ive noticed around here that most dogs that are for sale that are not walkers are priced a lot higher than walkers of the same ability. Now before I have people come on here and say Im being biased, i was just saying that seems to be a trend around here IN MY OPINION(may not be worth nothing).

nope wasnt looking for just a redbone (note in an earlier post) i said i will take a labrodoodle if it trees a coon lol

This is not your post or your message board ... you come here and ask for opinions then you get them from anyone and everyone ... if you can't handle that , then you will never have what it takes to train a pup ....

... good luck though , honestly ...

you did not give an opinion, if you had i wouldnt care that you were being rude and obnoxious, but sense you did not, then shut up! thank you

I could say the same to you , if you'd have seen me first .. then you could say " I've seen you and it's obvious you don't know what you're talking about " ..... instead of you not seeing me and then saying I haven't seen you ... which is totally silly ....
