I don't care who kills what. What makes me nuts is when people give me crap for NOT killing coons. I personally just don't like doing it and man oh man you would think I am NEVER going to have a dog if I don't peel out 100 a year....

were i am we have so many people that come in to hunt deer its hard to get good places to hunt. we put a coon in a tree every night. still have two more weeks to go tell ill shoot one. But that night there will be a lot of them shot. we have one draw we running that night that we were asked to thin out. My wifes pup will be trained just fine by end of season and when it worms up we will take him and let him tree and come next season we will have found our next 20 spots that need hunted and what dont. Use your heads. I will post pic of our first night out.

Here in the "land of the coon" I could kill a hundred in season with no sweat, 200 if i wanted to work at, LOL as i got older I just dont have anything too prove by shooting every coon out . My dog fred is just as happy treeing without getting fur in his mouth. What some other hunter does is his own business as long as it isnt on my land. have a good season but always leave some for seed. Oh yeah as far as taste just like chicken Ha Ha NOT

I would rather see mature boar killed in the summer rather than have dozen kittens caught and killed on the ground. I have been through a distemper era( if you treed and seen a coon a week you were doing good) and we got our population back by leaving everything that didn't have some distance between their ears alone. The little ones get big fast if given time and a chance.

The little ones get big fast if given time and a chance.

Young and old get distemper but a big sow will have more kittens and is proven to know how to raise them. Now I would rather kill a boar than a dozen kittens. I don't hunt for weight though. So I would rather take a boar kitten than a grown boar tha can survive a cold winter and knows how to survive allready.
It doesn't make much differance if you have a big population of big coon but if you are trying to build up or protect your population then I would rather take the small ones.
You can give it up though. I have had the big little debate in the barber shop with the deer hunters for 23 years. They can think of every excuse in the world to get the biggest buck of the year on there wall. Even if last years is bigger and on there wall with it. I could even see them trying to beet there personal best but they just get the biggest one they see. Even if it isn't any bigger than what they allready have. Then leave it at the buchers for some poor unfortunate to have to eat. lol

We have lots of big coon here in S Wi. We don't kill every one. Gotta leave some for seed. We do depend on the money we make on selling the hides and meat. We live off the land quite a bit. If I kill it I clean it, and some one eats it.

i kill 100-150 a years with out problem..nothing to prove. i just like to "HUNT" and its pays for the dog food. we have the coon to be doing it with.. i guess im lucky.. i have been hunting the same timbers for years without one problem on not treeing coon after coon.
once one is killed another two more from another property take its place.

also i love to see people with a dog and plenty of coon on the tail gate from a good nights hunt.. nothing wrong with that.

I live in heavy coon but hunting spots are few but I may kill 35 to 135 don't know' it depends" with dogs" and may trap anouther 135 in road ditchs out in the open farm land were you can't run a dog' because there is no trees. If a person was to kill 500 coon it would not even dent the popolation, they are laying dead all over every place you go, I travel us highway 71 and there is 15 dead coon in 20 miles of road guess what I'm going to trap the hyway
I might get some traps stoled but I should make a profit in this country everone coonhunts or traps for profit ,its not just for fun its for chistmas money or for some to pay bills yes the dog helps you earn a liveing too, we hunt for the fur, it worth money here and its plentful, I do fill sorry for you guys that love to coon hunt and don't have the coon. I wrote on this b&t page I would like someone to come and hunt with me for a couple of days or "weeks" I would like a partenar to help me. OH ya I like to pa

Shooting coons

I hunt around the midlands of SC, mostly within 20 minutes of where the Grand American is held and you'll probably here a lot of hunters in my area say that our area doesnt have the coon population to support shooting any. Maybe its just me, and Im fortunate enough to hunt a lot of my own property and all private land, but I shoot a lot of coons. Shooting all these coons doesnt seem to cause any population decrease, but if you ask the average hunter around here they'll tell you no we dont have any coons to shoot. All my buddies want to cry and whine when I talk about killing coons but most of my places are managed for quail and the owners want them killed. But these same buddies also always want to take their young dogs with me and my dogs because they know that even though I like to comp. hunt I'm a pleasure hunter that kills coons first. Now as far as shooting coons making my dogs any better than the next guy maybe not, but Ive never had a problem treeing coons with any dog that I was serious about hunting and this has been reflected in my competition hunts. Another thing that Ive noticed is most of the guys around here that whine about shooting "their coons" is that they only want to hunt the places that are the most perfect setup for coon, I like to mix it up a lil bit sometimes and hunt places that are not the best but I have decent dogs that know how to get gone and find a coon to tree.

Bottom line. I kill coon when I personally feel it benefits the dog. I don't kill coon cause I like to do it or think I am going to make a rat cent. Dogs first season I will give them a good amount, the next year I will give them ones they work for or have accomplished something we are working on like split treeing.

I agree, killing coon is a training tool.

There is more money in selling started dogs than coon hides, if thats what your after.
