-- O/T - Anybody Ever Used A Dog For Blood Trailing? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=383538)
There is no way I would use a dog I planned to hunt anything else with as a deer finder.
It's easy to get one finding deer (or at least it was in the case when I did).
But I would think you would have a pretty trashy dog if you tried to train your huntin dog (bird dog, coon dog, bear dog whatever) on blood trailing deer.
I mean they would have to learn that it's OK to run a deer but only if they are put on it and would have to leave them alone the rest of the time.
I don't think that would be easy to do.

Blood Tracking Dog
A simple way to start your dog is to get some fresh deer blood. Get several water bottles and fill them. Put them in the frezzer to use through out the year.Take a bottel out and cut about half inch off with a saw and mix it with water in a spray bottel.Alot of folks use a harness on the dog. This lets the dog know its time to work.Start with a short distance about 75 feet spay a trail and leave a piece of a hot dog about every 10 feet and at the end of trail have a deer tail (keep it in the frezzer and reuse it)let him play with it a min. and pet him up real good.just keep making tracks longer wont take long.

I have 3 working In South Texas as Bloodtrailers on the Deer Ranches .. When their called out its another $400-$800 to the Shooter of a Trophy White Tail .. If Someone is Paying $5-$6 Grand on a Deer that even when Lost their Paying For ... Well it sounds like their very happy paying the Extra $$$ to Recover it.
MDBloodTracker has made some nice Recoveries ..
The Hounds Seem to Be better that what they used to Do ..
They used to Just send out a bunch of Ragamuffins with tracking collars on .. Give them the the Day to find the Kill and Start eating the Hams off .. Then Track them down and Recover the Deer !!! LOL This is No Joke it was How they were doing it !!!
One of Stan and Ally's Recoveries from last year
First tracking job of the year.....and she picked up right where we left off last season......This dog's nose is somethin special...put her on the first drop, and she was all business......I followed her through thickets that an entire Filson Double-Tin outfit would have trouble holding up against.......I'm darn proud of my tracker......

TK,
Repetition and re-inforcement is so important when training....If someone has a dog that "is a natural" at tracking and revovering wounded game, with no training at all, then they have a pretty darn good head start...but I think those hounds are few and far between.............. I've spent countless hours training my hound for revoveries, and I feel great about the progress she has made........while trailing, she will cross right over other tracks to stay on the trail she is following with out skipping a beat.......she's never run a deer, and she sticks to the trail she is working....
Watching her work still gives me chills......and the satisfaction of seeing her walk up on a nice deer that "little Johnny gut shot the night before"...well, that puts a smile on everyones face !!!
Happy training and trailing to you sir.........

I HAVE TWO LABS THEY WILL RUN DEER AND OTHER DOGS OUT OF YARD. AT LEAST UNTIL THEY ARE 10 ' FROM OUR WIRELESS FENCE. THEY LEARNED THE BOUNDARIES IN A DAY AND WILL NOT GO NEAR IT. THEY ARE ONE OF THE SMARTEST DOGS I HAVE EVER FOOLED WITH. DO NOT KNOW IF THEY COULD BE USED TO BLOODTRAIL. I KNOW GUYS WHO HAVE USED BEAGLES TO TRACK WOUNDED DEER.

The best reason to use blood for training is that the dog will be trailing BLOOD, not deer. Blood has a strong oder and the dogs can smell tiny drops that you can not see.
No, I would not use a dog that I hunt on other game.

I just ready an article on this and they used mini Doxies for it. I have 2 females and I'm going to see how hard it would be to train one to track a deer blood trail. They are super smart dogs and they way they move through brush and have the heart of a Great Dane, I think it would be interesting to see if I could do it!

HERE IN MARYLAND IF YOU USE DOGS TO TRACK A WOUNDED BEAR OR DEER YOU ARE TO CALL THE DNR AND GIVE THEM THE LOCATIONS AND SPECIFICS OF WHERE YOU ARE. DOG IS TO BE UNDER THE CONTROL OF HANDLER AT ALL TIMES. KEEPING THEM LEASHED IS A MUST.

Ok, just got myself an 8 mos. old female weiner dog today. How do I go about training her to blood trail? I know I need a harness, long lead, blood and a deer tail. I read the above post on how to get her going the right way, but I am looking for all the pointers I can get. I'm very serious about this and want to do it right.

Don't use the deer tail, just blood and a hot dog or treat at the end. You want the dog trailing blood, not deer.

Very excited! I spoke to 2 butchers today that process 75 - 100 deer a year and they both are going to save deer blood for me. I should have a nice frozen stock pile. Now I have to find haresses to fit my little weiners and buy some real 'weiners' and look out baby, cause I'm a gonna start!
I kinda went around and talked to some guys that do a lot of bow hunting and they all seem to agree that having a blood trailing dog would have come in handy for them at some point in time, in the past and say that it would be something they would all use, if ever needed again. Even folks that use rifles or muzzle loaders said they have had a need for a dog like that. Seems promising anyway.
