I wonder if the new recast from a tree rule in the hunts implemented a couple years ago has changed how many coon a guy shoots to his dog a year?

tonights hunt

went to one tree seen the coon,and led the dogs out.shot one out saturday night,might give them one this saturday.she sure did do a better job since i dropped one out on her...might start giving her a few more.some good points on here about to many coons,and them getting sick.thanks for all the replies..mike

had it happen in my "Training Woods" several years ago let em all live and the place was full of em... Mother Nature came by and killed darn near all of em.. Ya gotta keep em in balance with the available food or disease will do the culling for you.

coon population

i think your right wayne!some places i had to many coon now i have only a few,used to tree 5 in one hollow,now lucky to tree one,unless dogs go deep,man i hate that.lol i shot one out last saturday in wv to her,and she went nuts,this is a 2 yr old walker jip that got hit by a car when she was 9 months old,and was laid up for 6 months,so it's like hunting a young dog,treed last night in pa so no season here in sat. might go back to wv tonight for a drop w/the 22.

I only shoot them out during coon season, if they need them all year around i'm hunting the wrong dog. As to how many I shoot out it depends on where i'm hunting,.

pa coon season

we made 5 trees only shot 2.

I sat down and had a conversation with an older, well known coon hunter one evening. He told me you will never, ever see what a dog is capable of unless you kill every single coon they tree to them. And that is what he does, yr around. I tried to give my opinion in the nicest way and said that I dont ever shoot coon out of season. He informed me that I will never see the best of my dogs unless I kill them all.
Everyone to their own I guess...

I keep a log book on each of my dogs.How many nights hunted how many coon shot out to each one,etc.We don't kill what I call a lot.One male I specifically remember that I hunted from birth to the day he die at 12 years of age that had also made nite champion as well only had 57 killed to him in those 12 years.That is just around a 5 per year average.Did not hurt him at all was a first or second strike and tree dog.

good dogs wothout killing coons

i know a guy that has one of the best dogs around,and he doesn't even like to mess with the coons after you shot them.goes sniff's them,and right back on the tree...yea he's a titled dog also..

i read where john wick never did knock out a coon to one of his famous dogs, i cant remember what dog it was but he bred it for a long time.

Killing Coon

I don't see the point in killing every coon they tree. I can understand when your training a pup killing a few but if it isn't helping the dog why waste them. Petting and praising a dog works wonders. I give my 2 year old maybe 1 a week, and my 8 year old dog maybe 1-2 a month. If you have to kill every coon your dog trees your hunting the wrong dog. Don't kill it tonight and tree it again tommorow.

It depends on the available habitat that you have where you hunt. Wildlife populations are a function of the carrying capacity of the habitat, meaning how much food, water, shelter, and space is available. In some areas with good habitat, like parts of the midwest, it seems that you can whack coons a lot and they bounce back real quick. Here in the hilly wooded northeast, that is not always the case. Locally, coons do seem to come back harder in this somewhat harsher habitat. I have, however, never seemed to be able to comprehend how so many hunters whack coons year round in violation of state fish and wildlife laws. As far as the dogs go, the older ones do not need all that many coons shot down to them; their treeing DNA is bred so intensively into them these days. I have also never comprehended how local competition hunters can go hunt night after night for much of the year and shoot coon that their dogs do not need, and then register surprise when they go back and hunt those spots and there are no coons. Guess what your dog can run then? Red fox, grey fox, possums, skunks, coyotes, porkies, fisher, among others.
