-- Garmin Saves Dogs Life Again!!!!!!! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=380681)
Underground is a no go for ALL trackers.
The difference is that the Garmin will show you the entrance to the hole by showing you the last place the dogs were before it lost signal.
None of the others can do that, and none of them can track efficiently underground.

If you knew how to run the old units. You could find one in the ground.I found one 20 feet back in a tunnel. He had already buried himself in. I tracked right to him and directly over him. Dug down and pulled him out. He was almost dead. Thats why I try and break em from going in the ground. Still Id never go back to a old system unless Im forced to.

I believe the pup barking at the cave intrance should have been sufficient evidence that the others most likely were inside the cave if the signal had disappeared.

Nobody said you couldn't find them with the beep beeps.
I have found them underground with both a quicktrack and a tracker.
Physics being what it is it takes some luck to get on the right angle with the cave mouth to catch the signal or get close enough to them to pick up the muffled signal from underground. The deeper they are the closer that will be.
What I did say was that in that situation you were 100 times better off to be able to see where the dog went in the ground at on the map.

I have read a bunch of these garmin threads and the other night i went out hunting with a buddy and he has a garmin well we cut loose dogs struck go 880 yards get treed well this garmin that i was so uncertian about shows exactly where they are even the lil creeks and all between us. I have used the old beep beeps for years and everybody is kinda forgetting their bad points.. Signal varies depending on terrain, Power lines have a signifigant effect on them, collar bleed over, signal bounce, magnets falling out, and dont forget about the always fun signal that is strong in two oppisite directions.. I know the garmin may have its lil quirks but so do the beepers.. I do very much like the garmin marking the last place the dog was before it lost signal and the topo maps. And for all that complain about the range well if you have a hound that is getting 3 to 7 miles away from you not only are you loosing the hunt but you prolly have a junk runner.
quote:There is no doubt in my mind a Gamin is nice thing to have and probably the best and I agree the old systems will fade away. I don't think any hound should be turned loose without a tracker of some kind on him. As far as where they are going I can usually figure that out anyway. They are going to tree somewhere even if they are out of hearing. I already know where all the highways roads Etc are. I don't need a garmin for that. The old standard of driving around to listen still is in effect. You can hear the dog if you are close enough for the gamin to work anyhow going by what I'm reading. As far as being in a cave, if they are deep enough you're out of luck. With all that said I might still might break down and get me another toy even though I don't NEED one!

Johnny, I usually get a mile range on my garmin depends on where I'm hunting, there is no flat land here where I hunt, hills and hollers and it still beats the old ATS all to pieces.

Garmin
I was hunting in Michigan 2 wks ago. My buddys female went in a 20" dran tile about 40 feet in and appeared to be unable to turn around. The Garmin he was useing lead us to the ditch and the 20' tile with a ? mark showing. When we got to the location, the compass showed a ? mark and we were near the last place it had a signal from the Garmin collar she was wearing. With the ability to go to the exact location we were able to find the tile where she went in. After about 20 min. of searching for away to get closer to her, we were talking about trying to dig her out, but she was about 15 feet below ground level. Things were not looking good. He went back to the entrance to the tile and somehow she had turned around and was coming out. The Garmin showed us where to look for her and we very thankful that.

you do your thing and i'll do mine. i have saved enough gas with my garmin in 3 or 4 months to pay for it and 2 or 3 collars. have been getting 2+ miles out of mine lately. i don't know what has increased the reception. maybe some of the leaves falling.
