Chuck I think your Right this year will be the real Test ..

Just run one Slow Beagle wearing a garmin !! just fast enough to stick with the Deer .. It would be just like the Deer Wearing it..

It could really cut down on the Pack Size if the right Dog with the right Stick .. Hell use a good Silent hound that will Stick them ..

This Could be a Big Deer Count Year !!!

I don't think I got some magic unit. I think I got the same equipment that everyone else has. I have never even so much as broken an antenna. My brother still uses the DC20 Collar, and he finally broke that antenna after 2 and half years.

I think most of the problem is with our have to have it now mentality, also comes the I don;t need to read the directions or learn how to use it mentality.

i hope you're right about having a high deer kill year. i think there is way too many of them. since there are fewer and fewer hunters every year, those remaining will need the help of a garmen. as far as the beep beeps go, i use one. being an old electronic technician, i know they use some very old technology. old style electronics. they should have evolved to the super compact digital stuff a long time ago. they should be 1/3 the size they are now and use less battery too. they should have the same controls as we have on the gps(s), e.g., the small rubber coated butttens.

since your the garmin guru i have to admit your right i had ONE problem with my garmin in the 2 yrs i've owned it. i left it on one night after hunting and ran the batteries down. didnt realize it when i went to the woods next night. cut it on to link up and what ya know it didnt work and i didnt have back-up batteries. never made that mistake again.

Actually no it's not a lie. Quite the contrary. There are many more people that don't have problems than do.

Unless you want to count not having an extra set of batteries.

I can tell you I had more trouble out of my beep beep than I ever have my Garmin.

Owned the Tracker Maxima and my brother owned the Quick Track. Both were great systems for what they were designed for. Had very few problems, but never the less I still had more problems with them than I have with my Garmin.

Once the Marshall GPS comes out, they'll be lucky to give Garmins away... I'll have to sell my whole pack of hounds and truck to afford one, but some day when I can afford a good dog again, it'll be worth it!

FYI, the Beep-Beep companies will never go out of buisness. They still have us poor folk in California that can't legally use GPS... But then again, the only tracking equipment I'll use is Marshall... So there again, Marshall is on top of the game.

I HONESTLY can say I have had no issues with the 220. Back when I was running the DC 20's I had the rubber come off a couple antennas and they got wet inside. I got it fixed MYSELF, didn't have to send it to Garmin, and I still have it as a backup collar.

After last night I will guarantee I will not turn a dog loose without one again. I was handling my buddies dog in a hunt, and "Lost" her! Garmin had her treed, but couldn't hear her at all! We were walking all over trying to figure out why it was saying close and the dog was no where to be found! She had dug herself 30+ feet into a sand vein up the riverbank and couldn't be heard until I got down on the waters edge and could hear her barking through the sand! The GARMIN picked her up UNDERGROUND! I got her dug out before she asphyxiated!

Say what you want, but my Garmin saved my buddy's nice females life last night. Without being guided directly on top of her by it she would have never been found!

Yes I also had another cast member for a witness, for anybody that wants to doubt this is the truth!

Jamie, we went over this before.

With the beep beep that dog right there would be DEAD because the Garmin showed the dog above where she was last picked up. It allowed them to get right on top of her and hear her.

A beep beep wouldn't allow that and the dog would most likely be dead by now.

As for "get through the country" if you have the long range antenna and know how to use the system it's not a problem. It's not directional so even in the worst conditions if you can drive to WITHIN A MILE AND A HALF AS THE CROW FLIES (that's a long dang way) then you will be able to actually pinpoint the dog. That's in the worst conditions.

Of course all you have to do is top out on a hill somewhere and it can pick them up 2-3 miles away, but again the instant it gets a whiff of where they are it PINPOINTS them exactly on the map and you can drive right to them, or at least close enough to be in range with just the rubber antenna.

You can find a dog out of pocket quicker with the Garmin if you know how to use it faster than you can with the beep beep cause as soon as it gets any type of signal you know EXACTLY where they are. Not "that direction" or "on the left side of the road somewhere" but exactly where they are.

Again though you have to know how to use it.

But really it's no different than the beep beeps, you gotta know how to use them too.

I remember my old huntin partner HATED the Maxima. Why? He knew how to use the quick track, and didn't know how to properly use the Maxima. He sold one for almost nothin til he learned how to use one. Once he did he realized that it wasn't the tracker, it was the operator.

Same thing with the Garmin. Lots of times there's nothing wrong with the unit except how it is being used.

She was over 400 yards, and underground, and it was still picking her up and showing treed.

Quite an accusation..........guess it takes all kinds.......I won't say anything about the good service I've had with mine.......the last time I spoke good of the garmin I got pm's full of name calling, profanity, and loads of laughs.....like....well you know.

I would have to say I agree with this. I have a Garmin and a beep beep. I love the Garmin for pleasure hunting, but won't use it for comp hunting. I have never had a Garmin tell me where a dog is when it out of hearing distance. If my dog is treed or trailing and I can't hear it, the Garmin can't find it either. While pleasure hunting this is not an issue- my Garmin is on and I am keeping tabs of where my dog goes. But in a comp hunt where you can't use a Garmin til time out, I don't trust it.

But I think Jamie is right- anybody who has had a Garmin over a year has most likely had problems. There are threads after threads on this site alone figuring out how to deal with the problems- range issues, charging issues, etc. Plus we all know that they are much higher maintenance- Forget to charge your collar for two nights and you are in trouble. Forget a new set of batteries for your handheld and you are in trouble. Don't get your collars synched up before hand and you are in trouble.

But when they are working, and turned on, and with you, THEY WORK VERY VERY WELL.

95% is User error. Ya they have updates, half of the time that 5% is on here asking how to do a upgrade!! If you can't handle an up grade with the step step instructions they give you then you should not own a Garmin . That should be the first instruction.

I look at the the times when you guys are posting on these threads bashing Garmin, that is when you should be in the woods hunting! Maybe you should go hunting and take your beep beep if that is what you like, some of you guys seem to be on the computer more than in the woods!! (PS. IF YOUR GONNA WAIT ON MARSHALL YOUR DOG WILL BE DEAD BEFORE THEY GET A GPS UNIT OUT!!!) Remember your dog is out there waiting to go hunting, so stop talking about it and go hunting!!

I tracked my 2 at almost a mile which is pretty good for being in the Uwharries.
Both of the DC40's worked great on problem, but I've rand the updates twice . Once last month and already one time this month.
Use your updates..............

I'm going to a new place next week down on the Pee Dee river might have to try out the long range antenna again.
We tested it the other week and tracked the collars almost 7 miles back to Mikes house.. Thats pretty good....

Jamie Stall--I have hunted with the Garmin and not had any problems except for a couple of the extended range antennas that I got in a hurry and broke myself. Not saying they don't give trouble because I hunt with several people that have a lot of trouble and hate them but also lots that love them. As far as having trouble they are all man-made and will give trouble, I have bought some brand new quick-track collars a couple years ago and one of them didn't work but 1 day and died. I bear/hog/coon hunt and I still run beeping collars with the garmin but haven't used a regular tracking box but a couple times in almost 2 years. A beeping collar is really a process of deciding where your dogs are not and like everybody says if you get a seconds signal with the GPS there is no guessing..

Garmin Saves Dogs Lives---- well it also tells the truth about dogs and it cost some their lives!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that is why some people don't want one they don't want to know the truth about what their dog is doing.

Why is it Garmin's fault that the beep/beep systems have lowered their prices? Just think the makers of the beep/beeps are still making MONEY at this low price so just think how much MONEY they where making before? I would say not Garmin's fault??

Thats for **** sure! If you got a coondog you more than likely wont have to look for him most of the time! But that little gadget sure saves a lotta time
