How To
For those of you that don't know how to run the update, here ya go......Hello Customer,
What we are going to want to do first is update the software on the unit. Often times this will correct any direction and range issues you are having.
To update your unit's software, please follow the instruction's below. The latest software update for your unit will correct this issue.
1. Please go to the WebUpdater webpage by clicking on the following link: http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=931.
2. You will see a link labeled Download, please click on it.
3. You will be asked if you want to Run or Save the file, please click Run.
4. After the file downloads, you may receive a security warning; if you do, please click Run.
5. Please select your setup language and click Next (the following instructions are based on the English selection).
6. You will see a new window; please click Next.
7. A license agreement will appear; please agree to the terms and then click Next.
8. You will see the destination folder, please click Next.
9. Click Install; the WebUpdater installation will begin.
10. After the installation, please ensure that there is a checkmark next to Yes, I want to launch WebUpdater now and then click Finish.
11. The WebUpdater program will launch - again, please ensure that your unit is connected to the computer and turned on.
12. Click Next; you will then be prompted to select your GPS. Please select USB Device and then click Next.
13. A new window will appear with information about the update for your unit, please click Next.
14. A new license agreement will appear, please click that you agree and then click Next.
15. The unit's internal operating system/software (sometimes called "firmware") will then be updated.
16. Once the download is complete, please click Finish.
17. Please feel free to disconnect the unit; it is ready to use.
If this update still seems to not be fixing the issue, we can try a master reset of the unit. This will restore the unit to factory default settings and it will delete any waypoints, routes, and tracks that you have saved on your unit. Please make sure to save them to a computer if you wish to not have them lost.
A master reset will erase all user data as well as any corrupt data that may be causing the unit to malfunction. This can be done by following these steps: With the unit powered off press and hold the MAP + ENTER + POWER until the unit powers on and the screen displays: "Do you really want to erase all user data?" Select Yes. Allow the unit to have a clear view of the sky for about 15 minutes in order to reacquire satellites.
If the above does not correct the issue then the unit will need to come in for repair.
I will be happy to set up a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) for the exchange; however, I will need to verify some information to be able to do so. Please verify and complete as needed the following information in a reply to this email:
- Name:
- Phone #:
- Email:
- Shipping Address:
- Serial # of GPS device:
- Description of the problem:
- Age of Device*:
* All Garmin products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase.
* If your device is under 1 year old, to obtain warranty service, an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required showing the original date of purchase. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. You may do this by either by attaching an image to this email, or if you need to send it by fax, please send it to: 913-440-8280 Attn: Drew G, Associate #6972. Please include a copy of this email as well. Once warranty is verified, the device will be exchanged at no cost to you. Your return device includes a 90 day warranty or the remainder of your current warranty whichever is the greater. Physical damage voids any such warranty.
* For the device outside of warranty there is a flat rate of exchange of $150.00 plus tax if applicable. This will cover any and all issues with your current device, and includes updating software, return shipping, and provides your return device with a 90 day warranty (or the remainder of your original warranty, whichever is the greater.)
- You may send in a check to cover the exchange costs. (It must be sent separately from the device to our Finance department):
I will include the total amount (including tax if applicable) with RMA number in my reply, along with instructions for sending the check in. Keep in mind, shipping of the returned item may be delayed until the check has cleared. Request submitted via email will by default be setup as payment by check. Please provide the check number if possible.
-If you desire payment by other means I do not recommend providing credit card information through email or fax since this is not a secure method. Please let me know what would be the best time and a telephone number for Garmin to contact you to place an order. After receiving your contact information you should receive a call within 24 to 48 business hours.
If you have not done so already, please register your device here: https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm . It is important to have your device registered so that in the unlikely event your device is separated from the paper work, or lost in the mail, we will have a record of the serial number in question.
>Please let us know if you wish to proceed with this process.
When I receive this information, I will email you the address and your RMA number to have the device shipped back to us for the exchange. We cannot guarantee GPS data recovery, if at all possible, please backup the GPS before sending it to us. From the time that we receive the device, we should have a replacement device back to you in approximately 10-14 business days.
If you have any other questions, just let us know.

I would love to have a garmin if they got more distance ! There just not consistent enough for me to spend the money. Great concept technology just isn't there yet
It will reach out
A long way if you use a long range antenna.
The technology is there if people would take the time to learn how to use it.

I hunt mountains an most I've ever seen even with long range ant. Was just over a mile.
Would like to see more in the 2 to 3 mile range. On average
This should be a sticky.

Wow...2-3 miles.... If i have to walk that far drop after drop, I'd find a new hobby.
Most I have had to go was 1.3 miles, and the Garmin still had them. Haven't tested to see how far away I can get from it, but I have not yet been let down. If my dog needs to pass all those coon and go 2-3 miles to tree a coon, he can just keep going.

Well I updated everything last week.
We went tonight and made 4 drops. Never lost signal one time, not even the GPS signal (at least that I saw). I figgured I would lose that some but I didn't.
Now I need to see how the 40 does with water. Heard bad things, but haven't had one on any of the dogs that swam the river yet.
While I am still skeptical I haven't had any issues with the 40 yet. I may have some tomorrow, but as of not none.
I'm glad cause they do seem to have just a touch more range.

Here is my Test this morning.. If you don't want this on your Post let me know and I'll pull it down..
I updated the DC40 with the 3.50 update.
This is tough to compare. Today was a Great satelite day so it should have done better without the update.. Trying to figure out if it was the update or the conditions is tough, Normally I see my 220 bounce GPS signal because it's mounted kinda far from the window.. Today It held Full service all day without any hickups.. So I know that this was a Good day for GPS.. I worry that this might be some of the Reason for such a good experience... It was Pissing down rain it was miserable hunting condition but I was hoping for a hot track.. (no luck) My dogs never left the road.
So here is a quick review of my test today..
It did better. Still not good enough for me. but I would call it much better and worth the update. It stops all the Lost GPS signal messages.. But the DC40 still was losing or Weak Signal it just was not letting me know as often.
I only updated the DC40 and not my My DC30's. The DC30's still out performed the DC40. But Rigging the DC40 and All the DC30's performed flawless without any Looses with all the dogs on the rig, Even though The DC40 went to a weak signal it was still tracking and not missing or cuting across any of the culverts like I've seen before..
Then I boxed the dogs back through and the DC40 started to loose signal. (so did some of the DC30 here and there. But the DC40 clearly lost GPS much more than the DC30's.. I think My DC40 Tracked 3-4 miles in the box, where my DC30's tracked anywhere from 13-20 miles on the way home..
I'm still trying to digest all this and figure out what is fair (Unbiased) to say about it.. If it was only tracking outside of the box the DC40 did not have any issues and I would have to give it a Two Thumbs up.. but this was just one Hunt and good conditions.... This was also all on Logging roads and Little to no Brush so I'm not ready to change my opinion about them and recomend them by any long shot... But it did soften my opinion about them some compared to what I've seen before... And will make me to Reconsider and re-test them all over again..

I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY want any actual field tests on here. I am only one person and can only give my hunting experiences here in the mts of east Tennessee. I still have to put the 40 in swamps and time to complete my opinion. If it can't hold up then it doesn't matter how good it does the first week.
I started this post to give actual hunting experience with the 40 from people actually using them.
Any hunting experience with them is welcome.

My 2 cents is this. I was terrified to update my unit because it worked fine. The range was not that great but not real bad either, it never gave me any trouble. So i did the update and it does not even act like the same unit. Since the update I noticed the triple blink on the DC-30 and a couple days ago I got 3.5 miles out of it. I have not had it go out of range any at all under hunting conditions, it hooks up alot faster and works great. I have not tried the 40 yet but I am very happy with the new update on the 30.
I updated mine and it did seem to help some. I haven't tested it much but I do think it helped.

other dog had a 30 on him but didn't make the swim so nothing to compare to..
Yeah from reports I seen water worries me but my experience has been much better than expected so who knows.
I am waiting to see about water.
The other night the one that swam the river had the 30 on so I have no clue how the 40 does in water.

Ok so I just got finished doing a side by side "range" comparison for lack of a better term.
I had both my 30 and 40 hooked to the fence then took off.
Both got a little over 1 mile with the handheld, then anything from 1.5 to 2.5 miles with the roof mount.
I didn't see "how far" I could get a signal. I have no doubt I could have picked both of them up over 3-4 miles in spots (going to high ground etc).
Most consistantly it was .7-1 mile with the hand held and 2 miles with the roof mount.
At first I thought the 30 was going to outperform the 40 because I lost the 40 quicker and more often going away, but I came back from the opposite direction (made a large circle) and it was the opposite.
So far IMO they are equal. The 40 is no better than the 30 with the exception of the charging system and the day glo collar. That's without testing in lots of water.
By the same token, contrary to what I first thought I do NOT believe the 40 has any more range than the 30.
So really it's about the charging and the day glo collar IMO because they seem to perform the same. (again this is without having the 40 in deep water, haven't had it there yet so I don't know how it will do.)
Also the update makes the 30 have the "triple blink" too.

can someone please explane to me how to update your dc 30 collars.....
Yes you just hook your handheld up to your computer and update it or look for updates etc.
Your handheld works like a modem for your collars. You have to have your collars on and them communicating with the handheld and they have to be within 1 or 2 feet, not sure how far. Then you go just like you were gonna look at that collar on your handheld (click on Max or Collar 1, whatver). Once the collar is hilighted then you hit menu then hit update collar and it will update the collar.
After you update the collar you may have to change the frequency by one number or something for it to find it again, then you can switch it back to your frequency if you want.
It's not that hard once you figgure it out.

I wouldn't think upgrades would help distance.
It CAN help loss of sattelite reception if it changes the sattelites it logs onto to stronger ones etc.
But it's not usless because the upgrades will improve something about the software (for the DC 30's I remember one that made the power button work better, you didn't have to hold it in as long, and it made it light up quicker so you could tell it was on faster).
It's usually little things like that with no huge breakthrough or anything.
