You guys are making me rethink taking my hounds up there to hunt, I cant afford to have any of my dogs down for any lenth of time. Maybe I can hunt alittle west of there while Im up there, maybe over in Ohio.?

Im in NC 20mins south of where SE WALKERDAYS is. I have hunted up north alot and love it up there but never in PA. my family has hunting cabins rite there at Tionesta. We have lots of Coyotes, they dont seem to be a problem like these Pockies seem to be. I would hate to take a GRNITE DOG, AND A NTCH DOG Them get a Porkie, My dogs have never been around them, I dont think they would mess with them, but Im not gonna say they wont! (NICK)

Come in for a hunt. Been hunting with a real porky dog every night here and so far, she hasn't found one to get into yet. Thats why the guy likes to hunt her round here, says she doesn't find them here. I KNOW they are here, but so far she hasn't found them. We see them hit on the road a lot.

We only ever pulled quills from my old female 2 times and our male 1 time, so either they learned their lesson or the porky's are staying out of our hunting spots.

We hunt in them every night! Break a dog off them the same as any trash. If I had a dog that wouldn`t learn it wouldn`t be coming home, I don`t care how many coons it could tree! We have always been able to break the dogs off them. Never used tranquilizer for the dog either just pinned it down and pulled them fast. Seen registered dogs get them pulled on the tailgate at a nitehunt and keep hunting.

I HUNTED IN A NT. CH CAST AND GOT SCRATCHED DUE TO MY DOG HAVING FIVE QUILLS IN HIM. HE NEVER DID BARK. JUST CAME IN WITH THEM ON. I TALKED TO THE MASTER OF HOUNDS AND HE UP HELD IT. I ASKED WELL WHAT ABOUT COMING IN SMELLING LIKE A SKUNK AND NOT OPENING. HE WOULD NOT ANSWER THAT. I WAS JUST A KID AT THE TIME. WOULD BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT NOW. IT WAS AT PITTSFIELD PA. WARREN CO. We are gonna be up there at the huntin cabins in Tionesta next friday not gonna take a dog this time cause we will only be up there for a few days. Maybe Ill get to see one of these little devils!

I would consider you guys down south looking at armadillos like we look at porkies up here...

You ought to bring a dog, there's a lot of forest to hunt in Tionesta... enough "hot" coon that a GRN or NITECH dog shouldn't have any trouble treeing them.

There are far more coon up here than porkies.

jculler is right, there are more coons than porcs. That pic posted is as bad as they can get it, and I have never seen one quite that bad. if we worried about them, we would never get out....bring your dogs.

Thanks Andy, Im going to seems to me maybe the Porkies are maybe getting blowed up a bit. Down here the worst thing we half to worrie about is snakes! And I have had A dog get snake bit before! Lots of Copperheads as a matter of fact I killed a 4ft copperhead last night a and have seen alot of Rattlesnakes this year! Ill get my Daughter to post a pic of one of the Rattle snakes tha t was killed here recently!

HUNTED MY YEAR OLD FEMALE LAST NIGHT BY HERSELF. SHE OPENED IN THE CORNFIELD. LAST FIVE BARKS I THOUGH SHE WAS BARKING AT SOMETHING. EVERYTHING GOT QUIET. SHE CAME OUT END OF CORN AND OPENED AT THE EDGE OF WOODS. LET OUT A NICE LOCATE AND STARTED TO TREE. I WALKED IN AND ABOUT 10 FEET UP I CAUGHT MOVEMENT. IT WAS A **** PORKY. I DID NOT HAVE GUN AND HE WAS TO HIGH UP. SHE HAD ABOUT 20 QUILLS IN HER MUZZEL, AND LIPS. NONE IN MOUTH. I GOT SOME OUT AND WENT HUNTING. SHE HUNTED FINE.

THIS IS THE SAME PLACE MY MALE DOG CAUGHT ONE TWO MONTHS AGO. I KNOW IT IS NOT THE SAME ONE. THE OTHER ONE HIT HIS HEAD.

I CAN TELL YOU I MAY STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE FOR AWHILE. AND IT IS A SHAME DUE TO BEING LOADED WITH CORN.

Characteristics
The porcupine is a rodent. It has black to brownish-yellow fur and strong, short legs. It has hairless soles on its feet that help it climb trees. It has a round body, small ears and a small head. The most recognizable feature of the porcupine is its quills. A porcupine may have as many as 30,000 quills. The quills are hairs with barbed tips on the ends. Quills are solid at the tip and base and hollow for most of the shaft. The porcupine has quills on all parts of its body, except for its stomach. The longest quills are on its rump. The shortest quills are on its cheeks.

The porcupine uses its quills for defense. The porcupine cannot shoot its quills. When a predator approaches, the porcupine will turn its back, raise the quills and lash out at the threat with its tail. If the porcupine hits an animal with its quills, the quills become embedded in the animal. Body heat makes the barbs expand and they become even more deeply embedded in the animal's skin. If an animal is hit in a vital place it may die. The porcupine is not an aggressive animal. It will only attack if it is threatened. Some animals, like the fisher, are experts at attacking porcupines.

Range
The common porcupine can be found in most of Canada and the western United States south to Mexico. In the eastern United States, it can be found in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and New England.

Habitat
The common porcupine lives in coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests. In the west, it can be found in scrubby areas.

Diet
The common porcupine is an herbivore. It eats leaves, twigs and green plants like skunk cabbage and clover. In the winter, it may eat bark. It often climbs trees to find food. It is mostly nocturnal, but will sometimes forage for food in the day.
Life Cycle
Porcupines mate in late summer and early fall. Porcupines are very vocal during mating season. Males often fight over females. The male performs an elaborate dance and sprays urine over the head of the female. Seven months after mating the female gives birth to a single baby. When the baby is born, its quills are soft. They harden about an hour after birth. The baby is begins to forage for food after only a couple of days. The baby will stay with its mother for about six months.

Behavior
The common porcupine is a solitary animal, although it may den with other porcupines in the winter. It makes its den in caves, decaying logs and hollow trees. The common porcupine doesn't hibernate, but it may stay in its den during bad weather. The common porcupine is a good swimmer, its hollow quills help keep it afloat. It is also an excellent tree-climber and spends much of its time in trees. It is a very vocal animal and has a wide-variety of calls including moans, grunts, coughs, wails, whines, shrieks and tooth clicking.

lots of porkies up here in north east pa. the best way to train is to start young before pup learns anything about killing most trainers shoot coon down to young way to soon porky and skunk problems easy to solve at this stage. a few quills a little skunk spray cheap price to pay take a dog thats learned to kill its another story some never learn trick to pulling quills first hemostats not pliers next pull a few take a break pull a few more and so on i wouldn't have taken any of dogs on these 2 pages to vet have seen a lot worse 1000s if your ever lucky to draw out with me as your guide i will put you in them and smile nothing worse than training dogs during a night hunt my dogs might not win but there straight cooners

I see what you are saying but my dogs have never been around porkies that was the question is how bad they really are.? Down here I got a couple places where possemes are really thick and alot of dogs will tree one, where most of the time my dog want mess with them because they have been tought not to. My dogs have never been around pockies so I just want to see how bad they really are.? And also how much a trouble you guys have with hounds messing with them, even when a dog is coon minded??

I think all dogs are different, but sooner or later most dogs will mess with one eventually. To what extent who knows. The dog i'm hunting now came back 10 minutes after a drop with 5 or 6 in her lips. Y anked em out with my fingers and kept hunting. Not touched once since. A buddy is having problems with them now. Been in them 4 or 5 times. Treed one last week and he fryed him good for the first time so will see. Worst ones to get quills from are from the real young porkies as they have fine quills. I'm in warren county. Give a holler if you want to get together. I know some good places where I think we could find some along the road too.
