I really like that last post Larry...

We compete in field trial and water racing events which are mostly held during the heat of the day... Some of the things you have mentioned I have found out to be so true..

Take putting a hot, wet dog in the box...I needed a quick place to put our male that had just swam, due to our female being called up before I could even get back to the truck..WOW!! Just the time it took for her to swim her heat and get back to the truck with her, was only about 5 minutes...The box was so hot and steamy. I was horrified at how hot he seemed. I was so glad he did not have to swim again, he was way too hot..NEVER AGAIN will I put one in a box during competitions! They will have to wait on me or start the race without me. I now have enough stakes in my truck that each dog has one and even carry extra for friends if they need them. I hate seeing one get thrown back in a box right after a competition.

I do only give a couple laps of water when they are hot, or during competitions period for that matter...I knew that from horse back riding...No matter how hot they seem to look or may really be, too much at one time is way more harmful than good.

I pack lots of wet wash clothes in zip lock baggies and throw them in my cooler. We use these for ourselves and for cooling the hounds. I have taught all the younger kids that travel with me about the cooling points on a hound. My grand daughter really enjoys this part of taking care of our hounds during competitions.

I do how ever give them pedialyte "mixed" in their water.
I keep the bottles in the cooler and just pour a little in after a competition. They always get plenty of water and I just felt like if they liked the stuff, then maybe offering it was a good thing...I'm a recycle junky and try to save pennies everywhere I can, so I reuse water bottles, fill them up at home and pack those in my cooler as well. Lord knows the cost of that Pedialyte eats up all of my savings on my recycled bottles and water brought from home..LOL

So, is the pedialyte just wasting my money? It sure feels like the right thing to do, but what you have posted makes perfect since as well.

You have to Give them Time to Rehydrate and its alot more than Just a Drink of Water .. It a little Water then wait 15 min. then Water them again ..

I would think pedialyte would be useful in a Case of Diarrha that has gone on for several Days .. Diarrha Can Strip out Everything in their System .. Vit., Minerals, Salts and Hydration ..

If a Case of Diarrha last for more than 3 day then I would be looking For a Intestional AntiBacterial Med.

Bounce Back you can find it most farm stores. One mine was vomiting because of the heat. I brought him is and gave him bounce back and he was back to normal in just a few hours. He wouldn't drink it at first so I dropped a few kibbles of his food in it and kept doing it until he drank it all.

3 days of diarrhea I would be taking the dog to the vet. It will probably need an iv to fight all the negative affects you listed above.

You also have to becareful with antibiotics knocking out the bacteria that are normally found in the digestive system. That can create a bunch of additional nasty problems.

Trust me I don't like the vets today as much as anyone, but there are times a vet is warranted and severe diarrhea is one.

Just a side question not related to dogs ... how many people actually got their children to drink pedilyte? I have never known one child that would take it. Apparently, some kids will take it as a frozen popicle, but not mine. I have stories I can tell.

My boy would NOT drink it Larry. Not even the flavored ones.

My hounds on the other hand, LOVE the stuff!!

i use pedialight i cant spell the stuff 4 baby works well for pups with parvo and hunting dogs in this heat
