Tried and true! In your case you need a starter pistol. I use my 22 rifle as I have no neighbors. We always would go to the back door and shoot. The immediately we would drag the cage coon through the dog yard. Then shoot again and feed them. Puppies as young as six to eight weeks will start to associate the sound with positive things. If the dog is coon crazy, after about a week they wont be gunshy anymore. You can also use any other positive action such as getting out of the kennel, going for a walk or just going hunting. Food and coon work best because it is something you can do every day. The only negative is that during hunting season my dogs go off anytime someone fires a gun.

Use SunSpot Lights, so bright its like the sun came out at night !!!

With your Hound, I would hunt him for a while without shooting a Coon out, get him comfortable with it.
Otherwise he may be afraid to stay treed.
When you have got him going, when you get a good clear shot on a Coon.
Tie the Hound back, and do the best you can to shoot the Coon out with one shot.
Do not use a Pistol or loud firearm.
After a while the Hound will relate the sound of your .22 with game hitting the ground.
Just be patient.

My buddy had one that the worst I ever saw..Got him treeing good and we started shooting them out to my dog..He would hold his and pet him up real good..When coon hit the ground he would turn him loose..Didnt take but a couple times and then that dog was gun shot crazy..He loved hearing a gun shoot

DO NOT PET YOUR DOG WHILE IT IS SCARED!!! You are just encouraging it to be scared. Just go somewhere you can shoot. Tie it up and feed it and shoot til you cannot shoot anymore. Ignore the dog and let it go through the motions. DO NOT PET IT WHILE IT IS SCARED..its not a human you are not comforting the dog only showing praise to the scaredness.
