I MISS THE OL DAYS!!

All I know is that I miss the ol days. When I was a teenager in the mid 80s ,when you went to a nite hunt around here[ in SW. VA.], it was a event. There would be around 30 to 40 hounds at a regular ukc hunt and 70 or more hounds at a ukc rqe [I have seen that alot at the Christiansburg Va. club and surroundin clubs], and you could double the number of people that were there. I dont have the answer to this decline, [although, I think all of yall have gave good reasons for this decline], but lets face it , there is power in numbers, and the anti hunters are stronger than they have ever been[ because of Hollywierd, Hollywood], so we need to do something. I would love my teenage son to see coon huntin at the hunts the way it once was, before we are just readin about it in a history book or watchin it on the history channel. GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

Go to an event were they have a water race, coon in barrel, coon in hole, coon in circle and watch the kids that show up and the faces of the kids and people there. They have fun, they came for fun there not as serious and just out to show how great of trainer they are or how good there dog is. It is a familey EVENT and more people come. If you live were there is a lot of clubs watch were the crowed goes when you start adding this before your hunt. I am betting you will put some of the otheres out.

I think the biggest thing is you don't have club members that want to put in the time to make it an event.

Less poor boy hunts

My 11yr old loves to hunt the hunts, but if they isnt any reward other than to say he beat 2 or 3 other dogs and a piece of paper he tends to not want to go, but if you say there is a trophy involved he makes me take him, it just seems ridiculous the amount of poor boy hunts, have less hunts at each club, more activities at each event, and reward the kids and preserve our sport through our kids.

Posted by VA.REB on 07-22-2010 02:54 PM:

AMEN, AND AMEN

TO THAT MY BROTHER, AT THIS POINT IN THE COON HUNTIN GAME, IT SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT THE KIDS, THEY ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR SPORT. GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

Up here its the opposite. The spring and fall hunts draw 2-3 times the dogs as compared to the summer. I personnally wouldnt schedule a hunt in July, August.

Boys you can say I am about the money. I AM NOT!!!!! I HAVE GIVEN MY LIFE TO THIS SPORT OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS.

I just thought buy getting the performance money higher and value of the dog higher, a little guy could justify spending the money on the hunts with a bigger reward.

I just cant believe how the number have drop of this year. I really cant stand to see it. I like to see everyone there having a good time.

We have a big hunt that we really put out the money for trophies and give away lights and benchs,ect... WE SPENT 1300 dollars out on this hunt.

FACT IS UKC HUNTS MUST CARRY THE CLUB, CAUSE PKC CANT DO IT.

I like to tell the PKC guys around here, I dont mind coming to their Junior Varsity hunts during the week, as long as there is a Varity hunt (UKC) somewhere. THAT REALLY GETS THEM FIRED UP!!!

STARTED THIS THREAD BECAUSE, I AM TRUELY WORRY ABOUT IT.

I AM THE PRESIDENT OF THE WV STATE COONHUNTER ASSOC. I am just wanting my kids to be able to enjoy this sport like have.

To kids money isn't it. If it aint FUN it aint SH-- to a kid. The more money the more serious people take it. Do the day time fun things and a hunt at night. The people are less likely to get mad at a man or cheat a man he has had fun with and got to know his family that day. No body even knows each others family these days. The fam. doesn't come becouse it is such a serious sport. I say go back to fun and people will come.
I know not all can have a water race but MOST can have a coon in a barrel, hole, circle and even a short field trial race. More entry fees and more fun. It is a win win for all. Just try it and watch the kids faces. It is something all can participate in.
Some one should come up with a mechanical coon to put in the bag. Now there is some one a million dollar idea. LOL

Okay here goes. You want to know the number one fact as to why hunt participation is declining? It's not about the money in UKC it never HAS BEEN! It's about our society as a whole are a bunch of liars and cheaters looking for the easy win, looking to put as little effort into something but expect a huge return!

Until good men and women start standing up for what's right this sport will "mark my words" continue to go down hill.

Everybody shows up to a new club at some point and if the members are friendly and honest sportsman most likely that person will be back. If they leave feeling angry and cheated you can bet they will never show up again.

One person at a club can ruin it for many people, one bad club president or a MOH that is clueless when it comes to the hunts all these things factor into people showing up. I used to not care about crooks and cheats, now that I have been to many many clubs I realize i'm only wasting my time and effort. I will eb at every hunt close to me if I feel that my dog will decide the win not other handlers.

Everybody on this message board claims to be "honest" but come friday night the devil in them starts to show.

Sure there are great people in this sport but the bad ones outshine the good ones.

This is the perfect post to show you why people don't come. When you show up thinking you are the only quality person there you might have a problem. If the only reason you go is to win you may have a problem.
NEWS FLASH the trouble makers ar BY FAR the minority. MOST ARE GREAT GUYS...............OH AND GALS

I am not that narrow minded to think I am the only honest person Grady, my gosh! Of course there are other hunters that are good honest sportsman.

Yes, YOU BETTER BET I SHOW UP TO WIN!!! Why the HECK else would I show up? To donate? Now, that doesn't mean you can't be fun to hunt with just because youre ther to win.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE A CLUB PUT OUT THE EFFORT TO SURVIVE. SPEND THE MONEY ON TROPHIE's and PRIZES. Give all the trophies away until they are gone weather your a cast winner or not.

COME to Doddridge hunt AUGUST 7th in WV. Look it up in the book. COME SEE OUR EFFORT!!!!!

This is 5th or 6th year we have had this hunt. Attendance has gone up every year in a row.

They crown DODDRIDGE COUNTY SHOW AND HUNT CHAMPIONS.

The hunt champion is crowned by a run off after the UKC is over. TOP 4 DOGS go back out with a non hunting judge and hunt for an hour to determine the winner.

ANYBODY CAN GO WATCH THE FINAL FOUR The fewest that ever went to watch the final for is 40 and I have been in the woods with up to 53 people. This hunt is ran straight up and everybody can see it.

This hunt has the biggest turn out around, but you can do that at every hunt. This hunt cost the club over $1300 dollars.

Why can't the members " carry " the club?

Like I said , think outside the box..........
One example -
There are a few places around here ( Even the American Legion ) that have rabbit hunts to raise money.
Not comp hunts , just pleasure hunts. Any way they want to hunt. With dogs or without.
They get some prizes (donated or bought) and charge $5 to enter. That $5 gets them a ticket thrown in the hopper to get drawn for the prizes. Doesn't matter if they kill any rabbits or not.
The prizes can range from a 2 liter bottle of soda up to a grand prize of a new 22 or shotgun.
Raffle tickets for the other one. (22 or shotgun)
$3 or so for an "all day" chili bowl or hot dogs or whatever.
A couple bucks for a breakfast. You get the idea.
Register by 8 , back by 4 for drawings.
Alot of the hunters would then donate their rabbits to the club for a " Wild Game " dinner ( club makes more money) at a later date.
I've seen from 100 to 250 people show up at these hunts.

You could do the same thing with a squirrel hunt , fishing contest , etc.

What's the clubhouse look like?
Folks don't like a dark and dingy looking clubhouse. Even if it's clean , if it's dark , it will " appear " dirty. Folks aren't gonna want to eat there.
What are the batrooms like? Makes a difference.
What's the grounds look like? Is it mowed down nice?
You get the idea.........

Wish it wasn't so far. Sounds like a blast. I am going to the SBA hunt in Stigler in Oklahoma in Sep. It is a good hunt with a lot of day time events and a lot of great people show up and they have a lot of good prizes like dog box's, dog food, trophies, ect.
This will just be the second one and I think it will grow every year becouse it is put on well.

Yea I would love to see our club do something like that. I think the HTX test could be a great fund raiser too if put on with some of the other things you mentioned and the family would be there to go watch.

I know Jr and trust me its not about money He probalbly spends more in gas than he makes just so we can take our kids pleasure hunting every chance we get. And we are also putting alot of time into a 2yr old dog that isnt even a performance hound. Its about the kids and a really great bloodline of hounds.

This has been discussed before on here and Im sure it will continue to be a big topic...On here it seems to always come down to food, which IMO is rediculous.

Things change, Its probably going to get worse before it gets better...I dont have a "quick fix" answere, But I know all day events, HTX, Better food, cleaner clubhoses ect. arent going the make much difference either.

JUST SO YOU KNOW I GOT PKC VOTES AT OUR CLUB!! I RUN THEM! I DID IT JUST BECAUSE I LIKE TO SEE PEOPLE ENJOY THEM AT OUR CLUB!!!

OUR CLUB MAKES $40 a month from PKC 12 months a year. OUR club make probably $2000 a year on 5 UKC hunts.

PKC IN WV is small and dont hardly make anything and dont hardly draw any dogs. MAYBE ITS DIFFERENT IN YOUR AREA.

AS FAR AS ME LIKING MONEY. YOU DONT KNOW ME FROM ADAM, I AM AVERAGE JOE, live in a average house and try to hunt above average dogs. I DO THINGS FOR PEOPLE ALL THE TIME THAT LOSE ME MONEY. I WOULD HELP ANYBODY.

Kids

Once again it comes back to the kids and having fun both for the kids and the adults. Some (not all) just need to plan for the hunts when they put in for them and not wait until the last day to put on a hunt. This gives more time to advertise the hunt and plan for more activities which will bring in better numbers and in return bring better people and high quaility dogs, more kids, more families, which in return less night champions and grandnitechs made and bring up the money for performance and help the clubs to keep them from closing. Just my thoughts.
