-- OT: Pulling a camper? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=364228)

You also will have something called a brake control unit that will be installed in the truck. I haul a 5900 28' Coachman with Class Three Receiver. I use a ball mount hitch and a 2 5/8 Ball. I use sway control and Weight distribution bars. ALL of that is fine, but the brake control unit is the cherry on top. Even on the biggest hills I pulled it on, stopping was always easy. The key is knowing how to set the brake control. Too much juice, you will buy tires for that camper yearly. Too little juice and the trailer will push you off the road, through the intersections, basically it will tell you where you are stopping.

That 5th wheel you are talking about will pull great behind any of the 3/4 ton trucks I was speaking about earlier. As I said, I have installed the 5th wheel on the 1/2 ton trucks in the lighter class and they pulled and stopped just as they should have. Pulling any camper is like learning to drive all over again, different set of rules, different set of responsibilities. Brake Control.

Found some helpful information here. A bunch of different RV'ers and their experience. Some of it goes along with what I am saying, others disagree. Take all of it for what it is worth. It is free information after all. Opinions are like elbows, we all got em.

My 1500 had 3.73 gears with all the heavy duty features you could get on a 1/2 ton truck. That 6700 lb trailer was all that truck wanted. I sold my 1/2 ton and bought a 3/4 ton and a lil Nissan to hunt out of.

After a few big hills I wouldn't go to the mountains. I stayed on mostly level towing grounds. Pulling my camper with a 1/2 ton was close to pulling a ship anchor I'm sure. The 5.3 engine is a good fuel economy V8 has good HP but really lacks the Torque needed for towing. It done very good as long as I kept the load to around 5000 lbs. I use a weight dist. with built in sway control but now I don't really need the weight dist. but sway control is very nice. One Pete passing you running 90 mph will just bout put you in the ditch without the sway control.

Yes it had the tow/haul but you better pull it down in gear #3 unless you want to put a $2500 trans in it. The camper is a tag-a-long pull Travel Trailer. 100 - 200 ft elevation change was rough. I pulled my in-laws Jayco featherlight 4500 lbs dry with the same 1500 with no problems. My in-laws bought my 1500 to pull there camper with when I got my 2500 HD. My 2003 1500 had 2 tranny coolers, oil cooler and the big rear brakes.

Jonathon You deleted your post about the gearing,,,Yes i got higher gears ,But I have a newer truck with 30 more horse power and more torque,,, I'm hoping that will help me and alot of guys have told me a 5th wheel pulls better than a travel trailer . I've towed other things through the years ,bigger and heavier just not with this truck . The 5th that im looking at weighs like 6900 lbs

I live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. My elevation change levels may be off. If all you wanna do is mozey around have fun. Be sure to run with the transmission in 3rd and not D when towing. The overdrive clutches are not big enough to handle the extra weight being pulled.

Thanks T, my father in law lives an hour away from where he works and is renting a house here local to me close to his job and he's decided to just buy a camper, keep it at my house and stay in it during the week, plus he said he thought me and my wife would enjoy it.

The 1 he is looking at is right at 5,000# so looks like I'm going to need to make a couple of upgrades to the Danger Ranger.

Depending on how often you pull it you might look into renting a bigger truck now and then just when you need it.
