In my limited experience, tree jacking is mostly genetic.

You might be able to curb it a bit with a few dogs, but tree style is hard wired in them for the most part IMO.

I've got 2 at home right now that are tree jacking idiots. I have no idea where it came from. One of them has never seen a cage coon or was ever loved up too much on a tree. When she started treeing she treed far off the tree 4 feet off the ground. As she progressed she tightened up and now jacks the tree.

The other to my knowledge wasn't worked on caged coon and was exclusiveley hunted alone until it was 2 years old. I hunted with him often and it wasn't until spring I saw him begin to jack the tree. It started just as you were arriving to the tree but has gotten worse especially when the weather got warmer.

The only time these two dogs have ever been cut loose together was when they drew out in a nite hunt one time.

On the female, I own her dam, hunted with her grand-dam, & great grandsire on the bottom. All stand at the base type tree dogs. The sire, his sire & dam, & etc were all stand back tree dogs.

On the male, again his sire, grandsire & etc were 4 feet on the ground tree dogs and I believe his dam was too.

I'm not saying its not genetic, but I've got firsthand or good second hand knowledge of most the dogs in they're 3 generation peds and of those dogs, none were tree jackers.

The only common thing I can find is nite hunts. Neither dog jacked a tree excessively until they were entered in a nite hunt.

Both now have UKC 1sts on them and I'm going into fix it mode with them. Not sure how I'm going to do it yet, but I'm tired of it.

I'M NOT NO EXPERT BUT I LIKE TO DO MY TRAINING AT HOME WORKING THEM DURING THE DAY OR NIGHT IF YOU DON'T HAVE NEIGHBORS. JUST GET THEM OUT USE SOME COON SCENT OR CAGED COON AND WORK WITH THEM THERE AND LET THEM TAKE IT TO THE WOODS WITH THEM. IT'LL GIVE YOU ALOT MORE TIME AND TOOLS TO WORK WITH BEING AT HOME.

The energy and hyper is genitic. What they do with it is habbit. You just have to try to keep them in a good one as long as you can and not let them get away with stuff any more than you have to.
Of course you can argue this till you are blue in the face with some. It is like HYPER children. Some put them on med's and some handle it with discipline and exercise. We baby set several over the years that was on ridilin and didn't need it.

Like any other trait it may skip around, just because a dog jumps at the tree dosent mean its offspring will, but it is there and will show up again sooner or later...Much like chewing...IMO.

Also there is "running the tree" and then there is "Jacking"... I think some are lumping them into the same catagory.

I have never seen a dog that was bad to do either from the start be broke from it, but it does generally fade with age.

jacking is just up and down and running the tree.... well i always thought that ment that the dog was mean on tree. jacking is not all that bad imo. i mean some dogs may climb them but once they break a leg (litteraly) they quit.i had 2 break a leg. traveller used to jump 10 feet (no lie! ask WVHILLBILLY!) since she broke it, it grounded her. she dont jump. Dixie, idk if she ever will because she broke hers as a 8 wk old puppy, but her brothers are jacking fools. she has never jacked.

jacking is just bouncing off the hind legs, running is when they make a run at the tree and try too scale up the tree with all four feet and usualy end up falling on top of another dog..tree jackers generally just bump into other dogs..which makes fussy dogs MEAN!!!lol
