It has as much to do with when the eggs drop as anything .. sperm without the eggs are useless .

That's why you can get double and triple sired litters ... start early and put a different stud with her every other day or so .

I saw a Retick gyp have puppies from a Redtick , Walker and Redbone .... there were puppies marked like each of the sires.

You might find a live sperm after 5 days and be technically correct that sperm will live 5 days.

BUT, from the time its deposited, the quality and ability of it to fertilize an egg starts going downhill. It only makes common sense to have the freshest semen in their possible at any time an egg might become available.

Someone will say it only takes one sperm to fertilize one egg. Thats also technically correct but its been proven that the higher the sperm count, the more likely eggs will get fertilized.

If breeding one-time live cover:

* Check your female daily with a male. When she will stand and flag, breed on the fourth day.

* YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE SHE FLAGS SO THAT YOU ACCURATELY PREDICT THE FIRST DAY THAT SHE WILL FLAG.

LH surge (female will flag) THIS IS DAY 0, 2 days later- ovulation. Two days later the eggs are mature and can be penetrated by sperm.
So that is 4 days from the LH surge.

LH surge is day - 0, breed on day 4

If all females followed an exact pattern, day 14 after 1st blood would be the standard. Although you can get pups if you breed early because fresh sperm can leave up to 5 days. Once eggs are mature they will remain for about 2-3 days and then start to die off.

Most females are not typical. That is why you should not be counting days from first blood. That is too variable.

I used this method on a female and it was day 17 before she would flag and stand. bred her on the 21 st day and she had 11 puppies.

Most people breed to early. It is better to breed a little late than early.
