This dog belongs to Randy Rotruck from Wv. What would you do if this happened to your dog?

If you haven't already taken the dog to the vet and plan on pulling them out on your own, give the dog a Benadryl tablet, wait about 40 min and then start pulling. Cut off the end with scissors before you pull it out. It releases the air held in the quill that makes it expand on entry.

This may sound funny but when you kill a porker shove it down a hole in the ground or try to cover it up. Someone a few years ago shot one out and later in the fall while deer hunting I took a seat at the base of a big oak tree and man my butt was on fire, I stood up and looked at my butt and had about a dozen quills sticking out! Everyone huntin with me that day got a laugh at my expense but an a$$ full of quills isn't comfortable!! I never saw it or smelled decaying critter and just plopped right down on it. I shot the nastiest looking boar coon a few years back too, his ears were frost- bitten off, blind in one eye, tail was also frost bitten to a stub, and he had a bunch of porcupine quills in his butt. This coon had to be the meanest coon I ever got and I guess he had a reason to be!! I think he probably got the quills from trying to share a den tree with a porky and possibly got a quill in the eye but not sure.

Ya'll keep them junkie things up there. I hope you can get it opened up to thin them out. We got enough possums to last and the armored ones are on ther way to North GA and not enough coon. We have off game here but are fortunate in comparrison I am sure of. Good luck and Happy Huntin

I live about 25 mins from the Pittsfield, Pa club. I'm just across the Ny line and we are loaded with porkies too. A dog will have a chance to get a porky about everytime you turn em loose around here. Some learn thier lesson after the 1st time and some it takes a couple and then theres a few that never will learn to stay away from them. Luckily I've never had a dog that did'nt learn thier lesson the 1st time and even then they did'nt get quiled up bad. I'm sure I'll have a dog that will have a problem with them 1 day though.

even if they put a bounty on them porkys that still doesn't solve the problem best way to solve it is to expose dogs at young age to all game makes correcting off game problems easier you can't teach an old dog new tricks has alot of truth to it easier to catch them at younger age too been dealing with porky's since early 70s vet cost back then in the middle of night 25.00 a dog for bad case a buddy a while back paid 500.00 thats crazy ill pull them hemostats work the best they clamp on don't pull to many at a time give the dog rest mainly to calm down. good luck

When we used to go to Canada and Maine bear hunting we carried Romp'em(spelling) and would put the dogs semi-unconcious and pull them out. I, luckily, never had one of mine get on one. I had the straightest dogs I ever owned back then. Dont know if you can buy it now. Used to dull them down with butel as well but I know you cant get that now. Glad all we have is dillers and possum here. I have killed as many a fifty dillers in a day here before the bear got thick and the coyotes moved in. Now they are pretty thin but I have never seen a hound that wouldnt run one if they werent trained around them.

No idea what it might cost around here to have a vet work on them for quills now. A friend of mine took his into a vet a year ago on a Sunday morning, I will have to ask him what that cost.

If it was Sunday I'll bet it was scary to even hear about.

Young dogs or dogs that haven't fought a coon usually are easier to learn because they don't know enough to dive in and grab on like a more experenced hound would. They get a few quills and learn a little before it gets to serious. If one grabs on and starts shaking it's hard for others not to jump in and get some, then you got a real mess . Specially if your by yourself.

I went for a couple of drops last night on my way home from the HTX. Saw a porky along the road about a mile from my house around 4am. Lets just say that was the last road that porky ever walked on! LOL

Porky's

Up here in Maine we are infested.especially along the coast.(due to the salty water)they really like salt.they make good feed for a bobcat in the dead of winter.the cats search the porky's dens out in the winter months kill the porky, eat him and take the den over.Lots of bobcats killed in the winter show evidense of such quills.mother nature also allows the fisher to feed on them and eat them from the belly out to avoid to many quills.the also have a fluid under there hide to dissolve quills over a period of time.
Last year a young dog of mine had one right off the ground shaken him for all he was worth.he had three surgeries and finally ended up loosing his eye.It was as bad as it gets.It finally cost close to $1500when everthing was said and done.
Do every hound person a favor when you see one!

Sorry I was not at the HTX but I new where it was. I do hunt in that area though.

Talked to the friend of mine he said when he took his hound to vet on Sunday morning for porky quills, it was 100.00 to start. That covered emergancy and for vet to come in on Sunday. Total bill was 385.00.

i carry a bottle of rompin(?) with me at all times. if a hound gets into a quill pig, just give them a shot and it knocks them out in about 15 mins. they just lay there and it easy to pull the quills, just be sure not to give the dog to much or they won`t wake up.

We usually just get busy and start pulling quills BUT I've seen dogs that blame you for the pain and try to eat you up. Others can be a handful for 2 guys to work on. If you get one or more of these and you're alone what Matt does will appeal to you. I never have but as I slip farther over the hill into this GOLDEN YEARS CRAP it sounds more like a good Idea.

Recently had a friend show me a tool he made out of a short piece of heavy rubber hose. Was about 3/4 or 1 in. diameter on the outside and maybe six inchs long with a small rope run thru it. Put it in dogs mouth similar to a bit in a horses mouth and tie to collar to keep in place so dogs mouth is open enough to pull quills. I've seen a stick used like this with the leash used to hold it in and the rest of leash used to tie dogs head to a small tree for a crazy dog, still was a nasty job.

Posted by Todd K / UKC on 04-15-2010 01:50 PM:

I learned a trick off this forum that has saved us a bunch of $$ when the bird dogs mess with a porkie. There's a horse drug called Ace...I think the full name is Acepromisine but not sure that's spelled right. I checked with my vet and he cleared us to give a 60 lb. dog anywhere's from 1 cc to 1.5 cc. It will definitely take the edge off the dog where you can actually work on them. It won't knock 'em out but it will allow you to handle the dog and get some quills pulled.

It's still no fun but beats a $200 office call.
