Hey Hoosier Hunters, don’t forget to purchase your 2010/2011 hunting license. You’ll need it to legally hunt this Thursday night 04/01/10.

If you have a printer attached to your computer, you can purchase your license on line and print it out at home:

The way my dog looked last night, I need as many nights to hunt as we can get!

For those of you that are concerned about Chris being a game warden I have worked with Chris for 3 years on the HTDA board. I have long forgoten that he is a game warden. This man here has done more for you in the state of Indiana as a coon hunter than all others put together has tried! This is not a paid advertisement, but hoping people would realize what HTDA is, has done and where we are going, join today and help yourself to the game you enjoy playing we need you!!!

Btw Jerry Moll has been right by Chris Powell side the whole ride to, he has worked hard going to meetings, conferences, phone calls, proposals really you have no idea just how hard these two men has put into this dog running season extension. Along with HTDA. Just like any other law passed in congress they coattail other laws to a big one to get an agenda passed. This is what happened to the dog running season, the trapping was coattailed onto the dog running season! It caught us by surprise as well and there is nothing we can do. I lost a nice dog to a car but I still turn loose, I lost a great dog to a irate home owner but I still turn loose and I know that they are trappers everywhere going to competiton hunts but yet I still turn loose! I hope that we can get some feed back from the ones on here who are not members and tell us what we need to do for you to become a member.

Brad
I have never met Mr. Powell to my knowledge. I have never heard anything but good about him and LORD knows we need more like him for any hope for our kids and grandkids to enjoy this sport.

His response to my opinion on the bill at hand hit me wrong. It seemed to be the exact same response as I have gotten from almost every game warden ive ever dealt with, which is, you dont know anything and if you dont agree with us your picking a fight.
maybe thats not what he was saying at all, but the way i took it.

This is my questions, why did the HTDA not point out that a yes vote for the increased running season was also a yes vote for extending the trapping season? Was this thing a total surprise to the HTDA?
If they want more coon taken, did anyone suggest moving both seasons forward a week?

I dont think we could ever have more leverage to get rid of the dryland 220 conibears in order to save our hounds and beagles than with that week that the trappers wanted. But I guess thats not even a bargaining tool at this point.

You folks from southern In. may not have trouble with hounds getting in conibears. Up here every ditch and creek and many woven wire fences has them.
Snares are not as bad because most dogs that are used to being tied will not fight the snare and have a chance of survival.
The conibears under water are no problem either.
Its the years when we have real dry conditions and the ditches and creeks are dry or very low is when we have the most trouble because in order to catch game 220 conibears are set on dry land and its perfectly legal. If your dog sticks his head in a 220 conibear its a dead dog, period.

I am not anti trapping, ive dabbled in it myself, but I believe there could be laws that would help protect our dogs and not diminish the fur harvest from trapping. It would just mean useing safer methods.
I realy believe that week they are asking for could have been a valuable bargaining tool toward a safer and better relationship between the 2 groups.

again, just my opinion.

I am certainly not trying to pick a fight, and certainly appreciate what many people have donated their time to do for us coonhunters, with that said I don't think what a guy does for a living should enter in this discussion. I primarily enjoy training dogs and am not much of a competition hunter anymore, and I feel like Elvis, what we are gaining in northern In. with the extended season and adding trappers to the forum, with the chance of losing a hound to a conibar isn't worth the gain. If they want to thin the coon population, open the season on Nov. 1st. I,for one, am getting awfully tired of politics. Why can't this issue stand on it's own merit???

Where I do most of my taking is a wonderful place to hunt with two rules. 1 Stay off the wet roads 2 kill every coon you tree. Even though the take season is Sept 15 through March 15, The season is really determined by the alligators when they go to bed which might be from Nov to March. Too bad wolves don't hybernate for other people. Seems like if they wanted more coons killed, they would just require it. Anyway I thought this thing was about a summer training period.

The work the HTDA has done has been for the training season only.

Marv, you bring up a very interesting point about bargaining for 220s on dry land. Would you support an earlier trapping season minus the 220 conibear?

If my post offended you I am truly sorry about that. Like I said I am just trying to get info up here quick and move to the next email, phone call etc.

Here is something for all to consider. The Hoosier Tree Dog Alliance exists to serve the Indiana hunter. If you have a concern, idea, opinion etc. call a director and let us know. We try to keep people informed about what is going on. The truth of it is, we hear very little feedback or anything from you, the members. We need help and have asked for help and would welcome help from any of you that want to be invlolved. I don't know how many times Brad has asked for info for the HTDA column in the tree dog magazines and he gets nothing. Our Message board barely has a pulse. This is your organization but without input from you, we make the best decisions we can.

I have spent this week talking with some northern Indiana hunters and trappers. The hunters I have talked with don't all share your concerns and the trappers tell me that they are not trapping hard until later Nov. With fur prices what they are they aren't trapping much period.

I think in 5 years we won't even think about trapping/ coonhunting conflicts.

That is just my opinion.

Rowdy
I certainly would support it if not for dry land 220's.

As far as northern in. hunters not being concerned about them, its like anything else, nobody cares about it untill it happens to them. Hugh Yoder, Don Hall , Doug Cheek are 3 up here that I can name off the top of my head other than myself that have lost dogs to conibears in recent years. If you wish to contact them for their opinions I will provide you with numbers.

Do a search on "conibears" on this site and I think you will be surprised at the number of cases of dogs and conibears that have been posted just on this site in recent years.

In my opinion the HTDA should make it a priority to try and work with the trappers asc., Dnr and whoever else to try and work out a practical solution so we can all enjoy our sport without anyone giving up anything thats more than just common sense.
If this were to happen, that week they are wanting could be a valuable bargaining tool.

I guess I was surprised that the HTDA was not absolutely furious that the DNR slipped this in on a bill they had worked so hard for.
Instead it apears they support it with open arms and want the rest of us to do the same. I cant do it as long as dry ground 220s are legal.

Great thing to cover before calling out the casts at hunts. I printed off a bunch of copies of a letter to send so the guys without email can just mail it in. I will have them at the Spring Superstakes at our desert table also.

I live in northern, In. I hunt all in & around Amish country. I can't even risk turning a dog loose in LaGrange county when trapping season starts. Amish boys, not only hunt with dogs, they use calls, they use snares, & they use dry land set Coni-bares. It is not unusual to get a dog caught in a snare each & every season! One of these times, I won't get there in time. Then there will be issues.

I have a question? If the DNR wanted more coon harvested, why would they not consider a longer harvest season for the coonhunters? Have you ever thought about a split zone season like you do for quail hunting? Because I live just 18 mi. from the Mich. line, we get snow that you don't get even 50 mi. south. As a result our season is slowed down early many years because of early snow. Mich. opens their season 10-01 & have no shortage of coon. We have no shortage of coon yet we seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to hunting. We don't open till 11-08 & when snow starts falling, many years by thanksgiving, coon start laying up, & don't move very consistantly after that. As for the fur being prime, if the DNR is wanting more coon harvested, Michigan hunters seem to always be able to get rid of theirs! So even if they are blu, there is still a market, or you just hold them untill buyiong picks up. John

John, You make some legitimate points. We need people from up in your country that can represent hunters form the great Northern hunterlands.

Down load a membership app and get involved. This is not just a plug to get membership. Here's the deal we have established a "CREDIBLE VOICE" with other sporting groups i.e. deer hunters and trappers and the DNR. Why don't you get invloved by joining today attending meetings, posting ideas on our message board etc.. With the backing of a solid organization individuals with good ideas can make progress. Without Organization we are just individuals yapping on a computer.

The response to the NRC has been UNDER WHELMING. Last check showed that there have been 130 replies on the NRC public comment page. I wonder how many of those are for and against? We have no way of knowing.

It takes longer to get on this message board and check to see who is feeding what dog food, read the latest report on an LED light or talk about some dog of yesteryear than it does to post a comment on the NRC page.

If this thing gets shot down, look in the mirror for who is to blame when your dog is in the kennel.

Here is one more thing to think about;

This is really a minor issue. Now is a golden opportunity to get organized and see what we can really do to influence state hunting laws. Some day we are going to be faced with a real threat to our hunting heritage and then it will be @$$holes and elbows trying to get organized to stop the loss of our hunting privileges. There is no time to wait.
