So how did some of you hunt before Garmins came out?? Have heard through the grapevine here in Va they would outlaw the garmin because it just doesnt help you find your dog but it gives a hunter the ability to effectively intercept the game they are running? This was from our local game warden!!

Them garmins are the stuff. Beep collars can't come close. heres just a few reasons why.
1. beep can't tell me how far dog is, I can only guess.
2. beep can't tell me if dog is near a road.
3. beep can't tell me what side of river dog is treed on.
4. beep just can't measure up to a garmin plan and simple

If you dont like the Garmins, You should Love them, they make the Beep Beeps worth about 50 cents each. LOL

Isn't fog just low lying clouds?......Never had a problem with mine. Everyone seems to be comparing these to beep beeps like a Chevy to a ford, when in actuality it's like comparing a truck to a boat. But I kind of like the fact that there are people not buying them, it gives me an advantage looking for a lost dog on time out.

I bought a Garmin and used it for about 5 months, went back to a Maxima 5000 and Quick-Track collars !! Don't get me wrong , the Garmin is handy but that is IT !!! If they are so great how come so many handlers are still running regular collars on their dogs also in the hunts !! They are handy but not dependable.

LOL, Great Grand Pappy used to tell stories about them new Fangled Auto driven Carriages. Said they would never take the place of the "Horse". When is the last time you rode your horse to wal-mart to pick up batteries for your Beep-beep tracking unit? LOL

Listen to what your dog is saying to you. If it stops for a min it will say its tree'd. I love mine wouldn't go in the woods without it. I still run a old school beep beep for the range incase of emergency. I have not had to pull the wildlife 2000 out since I bought the garmin though. Its nice to know exactly where my dog and me are.........JMO

I remember years ago when we got that brand new colored television. Believe me when I tell you there wasn't a sole in my house that wanted to go in the other room to watch the old black and white one. Had the same show but that colored one would let you see so much more. Same thing with the garmin. You can see your dog strattle or drift a track check a tree before it tree's or loaf around. Its just the best thing since colored television and sliced bread in my book. OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW!!!!

quote:well i dont sit in the truck thats for sure. i stay in the wood with my dogs and if i can walk to them, which is usually what happens, i do. there are times when it calls for me to drive to them. only time i even pay attention to that garmin is when i can't hear them! if i can hear them i dont need to look at it.

Thats it right there. Hunting from the truck watching the screen is not helping a dog work out problems, I like to start young dogs and this is a tool to see whats going on and speedin up that fun.
And being 100% aware of the roads makes it all worth it, besides the cost is better than any new tracker out there.

i just ordered one for my coonhounds, but i would never put one on my deer hounds.tried it and it was junk, the range absolutley sucks and the battery life when fully charged leaves much to be desired,36 hours my arse
oh and the radio interferance thing, maybe a marine radio wont hurt it but a cb with a 450 watt liener will absolutly fry one quick, when we were done "testing" our garmin it was junk.
it has its place and its not on long range hounds like deer or yote dogs.coon huntin it was great, loved it for that, but it does need improvement, and if it didnt garmin would not be working on it like they are.

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.
garmin
now folks i don't want anyone mad at me:
EVERY TIME i hear someone talking about their garmin it sounds like they are just sitting at the truck with it in their hand as if they were watching tv, if you need to watch EVERY move that your dog makes then you are not a very good handler or hunter because if you need to know what an old dog is doing every minute that you are in the woods sounds like you need a real coondog.
if you are watching the garmin every minute that you are in the woods pleasure hunting and not listening to the dog WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO IN A HUNT?......................
there again if you just pleasure hunt WHY would you need to spend the $ for a garmin if you are only going to be hunting to same woods nite in nite out.
if you are a big competion hunter where you would be hunting different terrain, areas,or states every weekend i can understand getting one but just to jump onto the band wagon to keep up the jones' i don't.
if you are watching the garmin like watching tv stay home and watch where the red fern grows or tailgate adventures...........
i'll stick with the wildlife.

BEEP BEEP SYSTEMS ARE JUNK! THAT'S RIGHT ABSOLUTE JUNK!
I never owned a beep beep system and never will.
Beep Beep gives you the general direction while the garmin gives you the EXACT location!
Most that badmouth them are either jealous because they don't have one or mad because they cant' afford one.
I use both.. Had the same beep for years and never left a dog in the woods but I put on alot of miles I didnt have to looking for dogs.. Love the garmin when it works.. I haven't had the 220 or dc30 make it a year without some issue..just bought new collars so I can send 2 back to get fixed..but there is know better way to see what your dog is doing..
I have used L&L Tracking boxes sence 1976 so I have gotten quite good at tracking with one and by observing the terrain
and Adjusting the Gain can get quite close to distance away "Unless working in tight mountains with the Bounce Factor of radio waves which effects the Garmin also ..
The transmitters I use now are as big as a Nickle..

if u have to see what ur dogs are doing maybe u need better dogs . i just need to know what way they went . dont need to what there doing because i know what there raning .
Love my garmin. Use for it coon, bear, and coyote. The only reason i still carry the wildlife unit is to help the other guys after I already got my dogs.
quote:If I would have had my Garmin 2 weeks sooner, My fine Lipper bred female would probability still be alive and I would not have to shoot her there beside that road last year. So you figure why I use a Garmin.

My Beep Beep has helped me find my dogs many times, they dont have much comeback and I hunt where coon are scarce...if you spend a little time with your system, and learn how it tracks over flat ground, through timber and in the hills, you can get a pretty good idea how far away your dogs are...I would like to have a Garmin, and I am going to get one eventually, but the first 3 times I went with a hunter that had a garmin and the DC-30 collars, each time they malfunctioned...any new technology is gonna have bugs and problems to work out...give it a few years and you will find a lot more people buying them...
Garmin
Thick as a brick I guess. A Garmin that works properly shows roads, hills, creeks even roads that are not on a map. I know how to use other tracking systems, a Garmin is a handy tool for the man that is not scared to use one.
