with all these "kick the sh*t out of them, .22 bullet, diggin holes" comments no wonder we get such a bad name as hunters. you think the people that want to stop hound hunting dont read these post? or do you really care? i know people do this but cant you keep those comments to yourself?

Barry,
I see your point, but just think... if hunter's would eliminate these barking idiots instead of tolerating it or going to great lengths to control it, the general public's opinion of coonhounds would change drastically.
When I moved into the property I'm at now, a couple neighbors were concerned because they heard I had hounds. The most concerned was one of my closest neightbor's, who is also a veternarian. If a small town country vet is concerned about someone keeping hounds that should tell you there is a perception problem regarding hounds and they're owners. I haven't had a single complaint in the 5 years I've lived here and the vet has commented several times how although he knew I was often over the dog limit, I did an outstanding job keeping them quiet. It was easy. I try to get dogs from good stock that aren't a bunch of wired 440 idiots. If it barks, I put a bark collar on it. If that doesn't work, I'll start digging.
My dad lives in a newer housing development. Again, many neighbors were concerned that he had hounds. Now 2 years later, they've all said the coonhounds are the quietest dogs in the neighborhood. The lap dogs and bird dogs are always barking. Not the hounds. Dad's dogs are wired tighter than mine but they found out at young age that barking in the kennel would not be tolerated by Dad using bark collars, newpapers, and leather gloves.
We often get asked how come our hounds are so quiet and another guy's hounds bark so much. Dad always says... #1 Start off owning dogs with brains and #2 the owner should be smarter than the dog. That pretty much sums it up.
If you can't control a barking dog, chances are it is because your an idiot or the dog is a bigger idiot and there is only one thing that should be done and it involves digging a hole.
i understand your point. i just hate airing out some of the "methods" that can be used as ammunition. my dogs dont bark....they dont like my method!!!
