You have to keep some barred rocks, they take cold weather just fine, nice eggs and when they get to old for feeding to make eggs they make great stewed chicken. Yum.

AGREED! We had a bunch of "retired" barred rock hens who did a school hatching program... they were still laying at about THIRTY years! VERY hardy. BUT... of course by THAT age they were not worthy of SOUP...LOL.. and were total pets...


We have a few birds here that we don't know the breed of since everyone gives us what they don't want...LOL.. and we have one hen who is PROBABLY a Jersey giant. VERY hardy. I'm assuming they would be good eating since they seem to have a LOT of breast. HEAVY birds.

Gotta love having chickens... I'll miss ours when they finally completely die off... But I just can't keep up with the work anymore.... I'll miss the roosters the most. Still have neighbors with them though and hope people will ALWAYS post their chickens on here too!
