-- Can a dog learn to have a colder nose? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=335946)
You Have too Breed for Both, Cold Nose tracking Ability and Track Speed .. One Without the other is Worthless.
Accuracy Comes with Tracking Ability

Its easily seen if youre honest with yourself. Most would die before admitting their dog couldnt run a track.

This is what I was asking opinions on. This dog just seems to grab tracks some nights he can't hardly finish. Can this be improved with increased exposure to these old tracks?

My question comes from nights that it seems like later in the night of a long hunt and on a snow or heavy frost he will work and work a track but just can't seem to line it out very often. Tonight I didn't turn out until after midnight and I had the same kind of night it just seemed like he was grabbing tracks he couldn't handle. Is a dogs nose just what it's going to be or can it get better with more exposure to old tracks and cold frosty nights?

Mostly I would say the opposite is true, a dog will figure out which tracks he can hang a coon at the end of and which ones result in dens and a frozen handler.
JMO, but i would discourage a dog from trying to freeze me to death while he mops around all nite.

Read Thread 5,17 on this post.i wrote them on here for you to read.hopefully they'll help you.any more questions just ask.
Cold Nose
Every dog will get better at working a cold track if given the opportunity to (practice) work them. To say they will become great at it is nothing more than a gamble. Some dogs truely do develop into GREAT cold trailing dogs, while others will, only be good cold trailing dogs, and them some will only be average cold trailing dogs.
They will all get better at it if you let them work until they are finished, and then praise them when you find a coon at the end of the track, and discoursge them when they failed to correctly finish the track.
This all takes time and will not be accomplished in 30 nights of hunting. It will take consistant hunting & consistant training for a dog to reach its full potential, then you won't know what you really have until you see your dog out preforming a majority of the other hounds they compete head to head against, or you still see some other dogs outworking your hound on these cold tracks. Then you will have a better idea where your dog fits into the overall scheme of coonhunting.

i would think at three years old, the ability is all ready there..you may just have to settle for what you have..some dogs have the desire to work a cold track, but do not have the ability to move it out..i call it, more nose then brains..

He has Stylish Harry, Stylish Coma and and Pac man female on his bottom side.
He is a nice little dog and independant as all get out( to a fault some , because he does not wat to back another dog ever if he is not there first) seen him tree coons other dogs run by or under. I'm going to try to keep putting him on the old nast tracks and feed him the coon when he finally gets one lined out.

a smart hound will (or should) be able to differentiate between tracks he can finish and those he cant...if you try the High Jump over and over and over and over, you think you wont eventually figure out what your limits are? Same with a hound, if a dog is getting enough hunting time to make a coondog, most of the time he should also be able to tell which tracks he can finish and which he cant (if he has a brain that operates)...thats just my opinion based on personal experience...
Re: Can a dog learn to have a colder nose?
No, it can learn to use the nose it has though.

Being from Arkansas right?.From what i've heard..Arkansas is loaded to the max with coon right?,with so many coon in your area it will probably be harder to find an older track.so therefore, theres another option? cage trap a coon!!let go..then three hours later bring your dog and cut him in the direction of the coon and see if he can line it out properly??just an idea?

Were you not able to learn after the first grade? Sorry guys just haveing fun with your theory. Get you an old dog at the pound. Bet you can teach it something. Probubley can't give it ESP and get it to tell were a track goes before they run it though. LMAO again.................

A big bore walks across a pasture. He gets to the tree line and meets a nice sow. He spends an hour in the tree sweet talking the saw into comeing down and going with him. They leave the tree and start threw the woods.
Now a hound strikes a trail over an hour old in the middle of a pasture. Does he know if he follows it that is will get an hour hotter in 75 yards? Can he work the old trail? A coon doesn't walk with out stoping. You don't know how long the trail will stay cold till you follow it. No w some dog will open as soon as they smell the old trail and some will wait to see if they can run it. BUT most will follow the faint scent if it is all they have. Except the ones that just blow threw ground.
