-- Black mouth cur squirrel dog? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=327237)
MY dog Bailey
I took her out this morning and of course she started ranging like crazy in the hardwoods. I walked down this ridge line where I see a lot of squirrels as she hunted around....fast, on the run. Well I stopped and was looking to my right up trees just to see if she had gone by any and she was back up the hill to my left. I heard something real close coming and looked to the left and it was a squirrel running wide open and it ran five feet in front of me...right by me...no joke. I was about to call the dog there and I heard chop....chop......chop,chop,chop. and here she came in sight running the line. She got to me and had a three sec. check then lit out on the line chopping every breath out of sight. I started walking that way and it was about a hundred yds. to where she was. Dang I wish she had treed it up a little tree but it was a big ol hollow with hollows all the way up. She kept running around in the area not sure of where the squirrel was though. She never treed but I was proud. I was really happy that she was barking every breath on track for I like that. Her mouth is loud like a hound and me never owning a cur I wouldn't have thought so. It's kinda deep to for such a small dog. I hope the treeing comes. I'm unemployed but can afford to drive the twenty miles everyday or two to get the dog out for she is showing a lot of potential. After this short story does anyone have any advice? Thanks, FullCry
just keep doing what your doing it should come hopefully shell see one go up a tree in front of her.try and teach her to bark on command when your at home then if you see a squirrel go up you can get her to bark praise her up and try and shoot that squirrel out or throw a dead one hidden in your coat to her hope this helps brian
just keep taking her to the woods. sooner or later she will tree one pretty good either by sight or scent. drop it to her,but only if she trees it pretty good. you will be surprised what a little fur in the mouth will do but SHE HAS TO EARN IT. caged game is ok ONCE. everything nc catfisher told you is spot on. from the sounds of it to me. she just needs a little more woods time and the switch will flip. just my .02 cents. duffer
