Bingo!!!! Those people just don't hunt enough. Me and my buddy have burnt out 2 that were coming on really strong. Now there both worthless culls. I was just trying to help someone out and keep from making the same mistake I did.

If a dog has it in it it will show it anytime you start it. Pushing it while it's still a pup it not a good thing in most cases. CAN YOUN IMAGINE HOW MANY TOP YOUNG DOGS WERE RUINED BECAUSE GUYS TRIED TO GET THE 100$ WON ON THEM

Think of it like this. You got a 10 year old son that LOVES candy. That kid can scarf down candy like no ones business. He is great at eating candy. But you give that kid candy for every meal, while he doesnt know better and you do. Before long regardless of how much he liked candy, and was good at eating bags of it, you cant force feed him any more candy. Same concept with a young hound, regardless of how much fire they have, how much natural ability and desire, if you let them hunt like a grown dog, if you push them, you will burn them out, they will get bored with it as they are not mentally mature enough to handle it.

If they had it in them you should be able to put them up for a while(time depending on age) and they will come back.
Yea I would say you can burn a young one out if you are hunting it with other dog that are in better shape, older tougher. You are allso takeing a chance of makeing a meto dog that way too though.
I think you can start them young but don't expect them to keep up with the big dogs till they are one. If they are running and treeing they should be hunting by themselves till you have them the way you want them. Then put them with company to see if they will do the same job with a trashy frien in the dark with them. If not hunt them together till it ignores the trash dog.

These hounds are naturaly pack animals. We train them to go against nature and hunt by themselves for our purposes ( to win at comp.) So if you want a independant dog get a sight hound.
I am going to make some independant hounds but will never bad mouth a hound for doing what it is bred to do.

I will LOL I HATE it when a dog in a cast runs around covering my dog!

Refer back to Jim's ruined post. If you are doing things like beating a 9mo old pup for slick treeing or much else for that matter, then you aren't burning them out, you are ruining young started dogs.

Refer back to my post where it says allow them to get by with things and it will start becoming an everynight occurrence.

Last time I checked none of those breeds could tree a coon.

Sounds like to me that some of these people on here can only train hounds that are naturals. It takes a little bit of intelligence to be able to train ALL types of hounds. I like them all, just SOME people on here need to understand that every dog has a different RECIPE.

Totally guilty. A new dog is cheaper than a recipe book. 99% of the time I don't see the merit in a dog to give it any kind of special treatment or exception that allows me to coax it into treeing coon. No matter how well it is bred, how cute it is, how it looks at me, or how big its mouth is, if it can't do the job with a little bit of exposure I am not fiddeling with it for long. Some people do and that is absolutey wonderful and I admire your patience.

The difference is I hate them all till they make me not hate them. Some people love them till they make them not love them.

Re: Dogs Starting Young

Alot of the problem with pups starting out great and then hitting a plateau, becoming "burnt out" and so on is that they were culls to begin with and someone just couldn't see it. Perhaps they were born with an abundance of tree power and looked good when they were puppies, playing puppy games, hunting puppy spots and being handled like puppies around easy coons.

They done so good their owners were sure they could take the next step. But at some point the lack of tracking ability, the facebarking/illness, the junkiness, the jealous independence, etc. all started showing itself.

Its easier to say they burnt out than to admit they were culls from the beginning.

A lot of that I handle while they are very young but the easy track for to long I think is one common mistake. Walking them up to feeders. nothing against feeders if they are use very little.

I think it is better to trap and release so you can age the track and know what your pup is capable of.
