-- How long does a sow carry there kittens? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=323767)
Coon populations grow because of
1.better food sources and mast crops which mean healthier coons and slightly larger litters and less of a winter die of.
2. A decrease in hunter harvest numbers.
You're not comprehending what I said Bill. Read it again. SLOWLY.
We done a study once that proved this. In a mountainous area of a state where very little large scale farming took place coon litters varied with the amount of mast available. Coons would have slightly larger and healthier litters when the amst was good, when it was bad they would have smaller kits and smaller survival rates. An increase in disease was also seen.
In the areas of the same state where farming was king and corn and soybean were prevalent, the coons had larger healthier litters, higher survival rates, and a higher popualtion density.
lol i concurr (that is the other agree word) on all accept number 2! the hunter harvest in my area is plain and simple, increased, by a long shot, even though coon hides are worthless, hundreds if not thousands of coon are killed on one stretch of my hunting area alone, i know cuz my harvest is in the triple digits and i can prove it, the first number in this triple digit is 2 and i can prove that as well, that is what i kill, not what i tree! this post fails to mention mother nature and how she works! the higher the harvest, the higher the coon kitten will be born, i have killed so many coon from this area and each year that harvest gets bigger! like they are coming out of the woodwork! i'm pretty sure that i won't hit 300 coon this year with my dogs, as they have over 200 easy, but next year is another story! with all this agriculture, the more you kill, the more they have in litters!

As far as how long the sow carry there kittens thing. That was the question. I don't remember how we got started on the how many litters a year but I would say no EXPERT could tell you. Oh I am not saying they won't try but there is to much differance in climate and food across the country. Alot of differance in coon just like coon dogs too I suspect.
When the EXPERTS get it right in humans then I might pay attention to them in something else. For example take women. There supose to come in once a month. Ask around a very high percentage don't. Some are in for long time, don't want to get close to them. Might be in a bad mood a lot. LOL
I would say a coon doesn't have a clock and it's system is stemulated by food and climate. So in the south with good food source they may put out 2 litters a year but wide open country and get eaten bu yotes, owels, hawlks and other preditors. One thing that was on yawls list. NATURAL PREDITORS gods little way of ballance. Now up north were there is more tree cover and in the places were there is good food source they may have a better survival yet ont as many born to begin with.
Lots of varibals and experts doing test. But were are they doing them? You would have to do them all over the country.
That is why I allways listen to EXPERTS when they speak BUT then add a little common sense to the mix of information. The thing that most of them just doesn't have becouse it isn't in a book.

The heat cycles of Cattle , horses, dogs, and even humans and every other animal can all be reliably predicted an generalized per species rather easily. There will always be variations, but they are minute and not the norm.
Libcreeck and Ben Cocker have it right.
