this is what i use

I use the black rubber calf buckets, in a calf bucket holder attached to the kennel wire with u-bolts. To keep the water from freezing i use the same heaters that i think nitechamp Bud uses, they are bucket and birdbath de-icers but i bought them at fleet farm and did not pay as much as nite lite wants, they do sell them at TSC. Place the heater in the bottom of the bucket laying flat. I run the cord through i think 1 1/2 in id THICK WALLED PVC diameter big enough to run the 3 prong plug through it. I cut the straight piece long enough to clear the bucket handle while it is all the way up. Then i put an elbow on the straight piece to run the cord out past the wire to the outside. The bucket handle is secured to the kennel wire with the pipe between the handle and the wire with those big snap clips - spring loaded probably 3- or 4 inch clips. The dogs can't even budge them. I run the extension cord through more PVC ANYWHERE THEY COULD GET AT IT. And i wire tie my extension cords across the tops on the gate ends so they can not reach them to my power source.I have not had one get chewed yet at all. 20 something below and no ice makes my life alot easier. I will try to post a picture on here when i get time.

I build wood boxes 15 inch by 12 inches and 7 inches high. 1/2 inch plywood.. looks like a speaker box with no speaker, just the hole for it.. i put a 2 $ cleat fixture with a 60 watt light bulb in it. run a cord out the side and plug them in to gfi plugs. the water bowl sits in the hole where the speaker would normally go. 2 below last night and mine, all 8 of them, had no ice at all. used them for over 20 yrs like this.when it gets colder if they freeze with a 60,go to a 75 watt. make sure the bulb is not real close to the wood and use screws on the top for easy access for repair. just change the bulb when you need to through the hole for the dish.these old hounds need fresh water in the winter time to produce heat just as much as they need food. wet dog food dont replace the fluids they need to stay warm.

I Bought 2 Heated 5 gallon water buckets about 6 years ago and still use them starting in December and up till the beginning of march. I only use 1 this year because i have it out in the yard instead of in the kennel's. I leave the 2 dogs out in the fenced in yard instead of locked in there kennel since they get along and don't try to get out. If you have access to electric and secure the cord away from the dogs i Don't think you can go wrong...IMOP

I just water twice a day and mix food with water and dogs seem to be doing fine. It doesn't seem like they drink much this time of the year either. -7 degrees this morning at 5:30 and all is doing well.

Thats the best idea I heard of.

I bought my first heated bucket this year from Orschelin. Its 2-3 gallon. If its over half full, the dang thing freezes on top anyway.

In the past I've just knocked ice out and refilled, twice a day. If you got the right kind of pan or bucket, the ice cube will pop right out. Seems like a container with a good taper works the best. But when it gets below zero, it doesn't take long to freeze and the dogs don't have much opportunity to drink...

Stupid, that is the only answer I can think of. The only place I see it now is in the answers to that post. People that answered that post should go back and delete there post. There still could be a kid get confused and try it just reading the answers. Be nice to get the work off this whole thread.

Oh I didn't look on the first page. Might have to get the moderator to get rid of all the posts about it.

i use to have alot of 30 gal plastic barrels that i got my milkhouse sanitizers in..i would cut the bottoms off about 7 inches up..and used them for water pans..the water froze but all you had to do is flip them over and the ice would slide rite out..but over time the pups would chew them up a bit..wish i still had some barrels around, they worked great.

You just gave me an idea of what to do with the old Army cooler I have.

Ok I just tried the evaporated milk thing. My dogs drank all their water and didn't give it a chance to freeze. I often worry that they do not get enough water in the winter, and in the summer my male dog might take a sip a day out of his water bucket. I think I am gonna start adding a little bit everyday and see how it works. Pretty inexpensive.

I use the black rubber calf pans. I only fill them with a gallon of water. when they freeze turn them over hit them with a sledge hammer and refill. I do this twice a day and have never had a problem. I got tired of spending money on heated bowles for the dogs to use for chew toys.

feed my dogs 2 x a day and water 3 times

i got a bag of goat milk replacer and mix 2 cups with a 5 gallon buckett of Hot water and give the dogs 2 cups feed each and fill their feed bowls the rest of the way up with the milk replacer. they love it and devour it.

when i get home from work i feed them the rest of their feed and just give them plain water and before i go to bed i water them again.

they seem to like it this way and every time i used to water them they would never drink it and it would freeze so i just add it to the water to make sure they are getting it and keeping hydrated

I just buy

Heated water dishes at Theisens farm supply. $14.00 they have wire wrapped around the cords, I mounted my outlets high and run the cord out the bottom of my kennel then straight up. Dogs haven't moved one or hurt a cord yet. My dogs drink a lot more in the winter than in the summer. 5 quarts every 36 hours on the average. They need more water in the winter to stay in good shape.

I saw a previous poster suggest that they don't drink as much in winter. I disagree with that, and agree with you Tully. Dogs have to burn more calories to stay warm. Burning more calories requires more hydration. Colder weather also is lower humidity- sapping more hydration from your dog. Wet food is helpful, but not enough. I am giving my hounds which stay inside wet food to keep enough weight on them to handle the cold hunting conditions and after they get done eating they gulp down a lot of water. Makes me think that their is a lot of sodium in their feed?

i water once a day. my dogs dont drink much at all in the winter, especially if there is snow on the ground.

A little salt works and helps to keep dogs hydrated too! We used this trick with the horses and cows, when it gets cold outside you have to make sure they drink no matter what and that works also helps to add a little to water bowl to slow down the freezing process. Not too much salt, then they wont drink it.
