Maryland - No right to retrieve.

In addition you can be charged with trasspassing without written permission.

The game wardens in my part will write a ticket for trasspassing if you do not have the written permission on your person.
even when the land owner comes out and tells them they you have their permission the warden will still give a citation.

I know this second handed because it did go down where owner was called, came out and told the warden he had permision, the game warden gave a ticket for hunting without written permission.

Mr. Nethery, No you can't just go get your dog if the land owner says NO. You are supposed to contact the authorities and have them help in the recovery of your hound, yeah right! I'm sitting here reading what the law states in the New York regulation guide and it all sounds to me like nobody wants to give a direct answer. It says to get permission of landowners in the area you plan to hunt. #2 A hunter may not go on posted property, even to retrieve a dog, without landowner permission. #3 while it is lawful for a dog to pursue game on land that may be posted, it is not lawful for a hunter to knowingly release a dog on posted land. The rest is just a bunch of mumble jumble about being a good steward of the land etc. It all sounds pretty stupid to me but I was told by the state police ( as they were giving me a ticket ) that you have to contact them or a game warden to retrieve your dog from private property. My hounds were released on land that I had permission to hunt on, they came treed on land that was posted. Myself and two friends crossed the property line by a couple hundred yards and before getting to the tree were shot at I ended up in a heated argument with the shooter who held a loaded 357 pointed at my head the whole time ( with the hammer cocked ) To make a long story shorter, He was arrested for some little charge and I was arrested for trespassing. My charge was dropped because nobody could prove where we were physically at, which- come to find out we weren't on his land. He had his hand guns taken and had to pay a $300 fine. He got his hand guns returned and kept his job as a town cop. He is also a retired county sheriff deputy ( forced to retire for sexual misconduct ) The law dogs always take care of one another! We as sportsmen need to become as tight as the law dogs so we can avoid situations like I was in.

This is the way I understand NY's right to retrieve law to be also. Proper steps are to contact landowner first and ask permission. If they deny you permission, then you contact a game warden and they will come and allow you to retrieve your dog. Usually just letting a landowner know that if they don't give you permission (if they're allready telling you no) that you'll contact the game warden and they'll allow me to retrieve my dog anyhow is enough. I'm lucky though because I hardly ever run into problems like this with the big chunks I hunt on here in SW Ny.

This is word for word, out of the

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Digest for "Hunting & Trapping Regulations for 2009-2010".

"Illinois law does not grant the right of trespass for the purpose of retrieving wounded or crippled wildlife or HUNTING DOGS. You must secure permission from landowner or tenate before entering any property".

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

Iowa has the right to retrieve

No firearms and direct path in and back out. Missouri, as I understand it, is to get permission from the owner and if he says no, call DNR and they will escort you in and out.

??

I pretty sure that here in WV that you gotta ask permission first and if they tell you no then you just gotta call dnr and they will come out and tell the land owner that you can go get your dog or dogs. I was a spectator in a hunt one night and dogs got treed and it took about a hour to get to em. well we get about 1/4 mile from dogs and hear three shots. so the guys started screamin of course. we get to top of hill and there was a house and dogs were about 70 yards behind it. come to find out the guy who was shooting at the dogs was a on duty k-9 deputy from ohio. (we were about twenty minutes from state line). he starts yellin at us and threatins to shoot the dogs for keepin his wife up and says he just gonna turn his k-9 loose to go down there and kill our hounds. just bein a complete butt. he pulled in after driving that far cause his wife called him and just starts tryin to shoot the dogs. needless to say no dogs were hurt and we got them back. but even a dag gone k-9 officer of the law was tryin to shoot hounds just cause he owned the three acres on top where his house was. he didnt even own the property where dogs were. he also said I the man with the gun and badge and you aint gonna tell me what to do. all because the fellow said you cant just be shootin at peoples dogs.

WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO RETRIEVE IN N.Y. The police, dec, or anybody can not go get your dog. Landowner permission is the only way.

HERE IN MD WE DO NOT HAVE THE RTR. BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE WRITTEN PERMISSION TO HUNT ON SOMEONE ELSES LAND. VERBAL IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. THEY CAN AND WILL FINE YOU. MOST OF THE WARDENS IN MY AREA WILL JUST WARN YOU, BUT EAST OF HERE THEY ARE HARD NOSED. I HAD A WARDEN GIVE ME A WRITTEN WARNING A WEEK LATER FOR TRESSPASSING AND HE COULD NOT PROOVE THE GENTLEMAN WHO CALLED HIM EVEN OWNED THE LAND. I WAS PARKED ON STATE GROUND AND THIS FELLOW WALKED IN THE DARK TO MY TRUCK TO WRITE DOWN THE TAG #. WE DID TREE ON HIS SMALL PIECE OF LAND. WE LEFT THE GUN AT PROPERTY LINE, THERE WERE NO POSTERS UP. HE WAS IRATE AND YOU COULD NOT HAVE GOT A WORD IN EDGE WISE. SHOULD HAVE JUST WHIPPED HIS ASS AND LEFT IT RIGHT THERE. A FEW YEARS AGO THAT IS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THAT IS WHAT HE WANTED. MYSELF AND THE GUYS I HUNT WITH ARE EASY GOING WELL MAYBE ONE BAD APPLE. WE WILL TALK AND RESPECT MOST ALL. WELL GOODLUCK TO ALL ON THIS MATTER HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR THE BEST.

One night I was in a place I was not suppose to be. I was gonna go in get my dog get out. Got caught by landowner. He was pissed and yellin at me. Telling me i was screwing up his deer hunting. If I had to do it all over again I would do the same thing. I am not gonna go knock on a landowner door at 3 am to get permission when my dog gets out of pocket. The landowners that cause problems i have found that I am better off not even hunting within a mile of. I dont need the problems.

Fed- Law supercedes state laws on fox-dogs and coon-dogs take a look at these laws. Show me were the white -man bought all this land from the indians,it should be on the deeds. If this is going to be a free nation the people need to start acting like it. instead of letting the rich run it all.

No right to retrieve in N.Y. Game warden told me he cant even tresspass to help if the Land owner refuses. If the land owner takes possesion of the dog (ties it) then he is breaking the law, otherwise your out of luck. Sad situation but your best bet is to be sneaky. I own 5o acres of woods right behind my place that i cant hunt because of an antihunting neighbor (cat lover)

What we need to do here in Georgia to get it passed, is for all hunters to work together and stop fighting each other over everything. law makers listen to numbers. unified hunters are what is best for georgia. If we don't unite, the anti's are coming to town, and they bring numbers, and money. We all need to wake up.

ABSOLUTELY NOT CEDERHILL. It has been tried and gone to court several times here in N.Y. I do not agree with it, but the court systems do. It is just the way the law is written here.
