-- Training hounds to come when called... (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=319226)
I've got a pair of young pups now I have been working on with a bull horn. I think it would be neat to do it like the old timers did.

I was going to do that several years ago but got to be just another thing to carry. The marine whistles at walmart are loud and can be heard for miles. I just use the vibrator and a loud whoop these days.

Plus, as others have mentioned in a recent post, some of the spots I hunt are getting smaller and closer to blacktop roads so I plan on working with every dog I hunt on coming in when called. A couple of them will generally come back when called, but it usually takes some convincing.
What are some of the methods everyone has used to train their dogs to come in on command? After recently having to give one of my broke dogs a little reminder that it's NOT a good idea to give in to a sight deer race, I no longer pleasure hunt my dogs without the Tri-Tronics. I've heard using an e-collar can work wonders when putting a handle on a dog, but I'd like to hear some methods that have worked for different people.

Every pup I ever hunted was trained to come in with the TriTronics and I have never seen one run the other way when shocked. Not even one. They alway make a beeline to the truck when shocked and by the third lesson, they are doing it from the tone button only. The downside is that if they hit a hotwire, (and that is common in this area) they are heading for the truck.
.
I juiced mine three times for running fast game. I always hit the tone first and then the juice. Now, if he needs to come in I can just tone him and he is there. Most of the time just calling him works!

I hunt with a old man that calls his dogs everything but their names. Whenever we want the dogs to come in he starts into hollerin and cussin and they come runnin to the truck. If that dont work he will give alittle electricity and more cussin and they come flyin then.

Good ideas from all so far. I've been hesitant to use much more than the tone on the e-collar because I was afraid a couple of mine would take off rather than come in if hit with the juice. I DO know the female that wanted to play deer dog will come back when hit with the heat...we actually saw her cross a cutover after it, and I have to admit I lit her butt up. She yelped once and made it back to my side in a hurry. Took a couple of turn-outs to get her hunting back "normal" again, but the deer problem has been solved. Tried toning her the other night to get her to come out of some private land, and she totally ignored me. She acted like she was bumping around on a track, so I didn't want to put the heat on her. Anyway, long story short, I'd like to find the most effective way to teach them without RUINING them with the e-collar. Looks like we'll be having some quality time in the yard soon!

training the recall
Here is a great website for e-collar training.
http://www.loucastle.com/articles.htm
If you have dogs bolting from an e-collar they most likely were never trained to it. The beauty of the shock collar is to teach the dog that he has the ability to turn it off. You can't just slap it on and start shocking them and expect any connection to the activity that you shocked for. Yes, some of you get lucky and that works, and some of you end up with dead dogs or dogs that never get to utilize the advantages of the collar.
Please check out this website and see if these methods make sense to the real dog trainers among you. The extra money you pay for a collar with a pager system is so worth it. ...and so much more humane.

The reason is I have NEVER had a problem getting mine to come in to their called name AS LONG AS THEY COULD HEAR ME. I start teaching them to come to me as a pup. I did this all my life, even when I was 10, didn't know it was a big deal LOL.
Hearing me seems to be the problem.
I have also never had one that I could call off a track or tree unless I was right there at them, but I have been unable to figgure out if it was from them not hearing me or because they didn't know they HAD to come in until they could see my light.
Seems like after I get their attention they will come in, which makes me think it's a hearing problem and I have always thought maybe they could hear the tone even while treed/tracking etc.
That would be nice it it will work. I got a couple pups comin I think I will try that.
...LOL!

Obedience is the one thing that is trainable in ANY dog. The brains have to be in the trainer. To get one to come when called start with the 50 or 100 foot check cord, call their name and say come, I'm sure a whistle, horn, or whatever would work just as well. When you do that nudge em in and pet em' up good. It does take short, regular practice sessions but the reward is never having to crawl into a brush pile, crossing a creek you don't want to swim etc. Practice and patience is paramount. Also, if you get Pi$$ed, never beat one to "teach it a lesson" when he does come in. Makes it kind of hard to be glad to see ya.
Leading is just as trainable, just requires a little time in the yard. Soon you will have him/her "healing" beside you with no lead, sure beats the hell out of one pulling you through the rough stuff and corn fields. For a few years I hunted alone quite a bit, generally with two dogs, but got brave on a couple of occasions and turned loose three and four (don't ask why, I don't know), on these occasions I carried out coon and had all dogs off the leash on the way to the truck. You may have to remind one here and there but it can be done.
when you got a pup that wants to play games with you and just stays out of your reach!! just lay on the ground and pretend your a cheeseburger, they will be all over ya!!lol
