We shot one out last year thought he was dead guess it just knocked him out when he hit the ground but when he came to he bout put a WHOOPIN on our 2 dogs. I myself think a real coondog dont need the coons shot out to keep there drive alive. I will shot out for a young dog to help them learn to trust there nose. JMO

When you deer hunt, I doubt very seriously you shoot the deer in the front leg, and then let your dogs run it down and maul it to death...if you are gonna kill game, do it quick and merciful, I think that is the point trying to be made here...any intentional injuring just to get a fight is unsportsmanlike....

Guys Guys Guys, most of you are missing the point. All I was trying to say was I was making a mistake and hoped some others might not make the same mistake and have some pretty costly vet bills. 99% of the coons we have shot out this year have come out alive. Not on purpose Justin, that has just been our luck this year. When I said I had no problem with this coon coming out alive I ment that I wasnt worried about this being one of those coons that came out alive with just an 8 month old pup under the tree. Thats just how this pup is. I didnt intentionally shoot the coon out alive. I just wasnt worried if he did come out alive. Hope this help clears a few things up and good luck to everyone

POP you might want to re-read my first post because I never said anything about shooting one out alive to watch a good fight. I said I had no problem with this particular coon coming out alive because this pup isnt afraid of one.

I have always believed that letting your dogs fight the coon after you shoot it out has always been a good thing. It brings out a fire in your dog and gives them a hatred for a coon. I have had several young dogs that never really clicked until the first time they got bit and developed this hatred. I have also had some that once they got bit that was the end of them wanting to go hunting, so I know it can work both ways. Friday night we had a coon run across the road in front of us. We stopped and got my 8 month old prodigy out to let him run and tree it to boost his confidence in hunting alone. He did a great job pushed the coon about a 100 yards and treed him. I couldnt have been happier at that moment. Now before I go any futher let me tell you this pup hates a coon. He has been bit several times and by no means is afraid of one. It seems like the more he gets bit the better he gets. So I had no hesitation in shooting this coon out alive to him so he could fight it. Well after a little fight the coon was dead and Ace was bleeding. No big deal he had been cut before just like any other dog. So we loaded him up and went hunting. He acted fine all night long like nothing was bothering him. When we got home he was still bleeding a little. He had got cut on the inside of his mouth, 2 little puncture holes that hadnt gone through his cheek. Nothing to worry about since it was so small. WRONG the next morning I went to check on him and he could barely stand up. The wounds would not close up since they were on the inside of his mouth. Everytime he opened his mouth or tried to eat or drink they would start bleeding again. I rushed him to the vet and they immediately put him under and stitched up the holes. Luckily my vet is a good friend and didnt charge me for half of what it could have cost. Ace is on the mend and starting to act like the goofball he was before all of this. Needless to say my dogs fighting days are over. This was just one of the freak things that always seem to happen to me. LOL So please be carefull with your hounds you never know when something like this could happen. Happy Hunting Jeremy Wilson

WHAT PART AM I MISSING????????

It's an open forum , and open message and the general readers of all kinds need to see that most hunters are openly against this kind of stuff.

Hunter ethics and hunter's safety are the two biggest concerns that non-hunters have .. and the two biggest things that stand out when we do it wrong.

Let's ALL be safe and ethical in the eye of the public ...

I just say Nancy, Ellan and all the rest need to grow up. Any thing alive stays that way by takeing life of something or they hire someone else to do there killing but things die to sustain there life. I would father see a cow electricuted than those poor heads of lettuce grabed up by there little green leaves and a person take an old dirty knife and heartlessly cut there little throat. The poor things have no chance. They cant even run or fight back like animals. It just breaks my heart.
I think they should have to put a face on every package in the grocery store so all will know it was once a liveing breathing thing.
Wish I chould be on that coutch with Nancy and Ellan. ( :
God has to love them. Even if they are hypocrites.

work with the personality of the dog... if their more reserved but hunt well, praise um on the tree and don't let um fight coon. It's still fun for them. If you have a more out going hound that gets excited when u shoot the coon, let him at it. It all depends on the individual dog.

It aint about the circle of life ... it's about if WE want to keep our hunting rights ... WE need to realize that our image to the public plays a huge part .. and the mags and message boards are viewed but alot more than just hunters .. it aint like we are at the clubhouse or the tailgate talking ...

Do you read your post get over yourself. Really do you have to give your ideas 3 times on the same post. We read what you thought the first time. lol Seriously, I don't care if you shoot it out alive, dead, upside down, or right side up. What someone does with there dog, gun, and time is up to them. Happy hunting and be safe out there including you Mr. Justin Smith.

Wow

this is worse then the last post i read where the guy was trashing oboma on here cause someone asked about deer slugs.

Lots of opinions!!
I always try to shoot the coon dead. I for one hate to see a dogs ears tore up. They bleed something terrible. just seems cruel,
But in the event one falls and is hard to kill I do my best to get the dogs back and shoot the coon again.
Also if you shoot one and it isn't dead its a good chance the coon is going for a hole or den where it most likely will die. Thats even more cruel!

Of course just like everyone else, just my opinion!

Be carefull guys you all know that the antihunting groups watch this sight and someone posting crazy ideas about dog fighting may not be a hunter at all. It may be an anti hopeing to get good info to use against us.

I would watch there forum if I cared what they though. The statue of liberty was given to us becouse we represented a liberal people that could do what we want as long as we weren't hurting others in the process.
ANTI'S I live in Tonkawa Ok. If you want ot see how a coon hunt goes just stop by. Be glad to take you BUT DON'T TRY STEPING ON MY RIGHTS AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE SAME RESPECT. It takes life to sustain life if you don't kill some one has to do it for you. BUT IT DIES!!!!!!!

well, i did a little bit of searching on justin smith. since he's way up high on his soap box preaching to all of us how we should ethically make a kill and how the antis are watching these message boards. well sir i found plenty of statements in previous posts of yours which contradict what you are saying to all of us so here are some quotes of his that i found.

It's BEST to let the dogs roll one as he hits the ground and run him up another tree only a few feet away

shoot the dog , whip the possum

Spotlight them at night ... you can dessimate them in just a few nights and not have to worry about traps ... just need some of that heavy buckshot or scoped centerfire rifle.

we used to go the the rooster fights all night and be at work in the parking lot to catch a few winks before work

I usually climb up the tree and get behind the coon , screw a pop bottle over the barrel and put it to the back of the coon's head ....
do the thing and then throw him in the trunk so I can haul him to the river and throw him over the bridge ... that's how we do it in these parts when coon don't pay up their protection money.

and you tell us that we're bad for the sport of hunting and not to brag or talk about these things yet you do. so in MNF fashion you Justin Smith get a big C'MON MAN

Posted by Justin Smith on 12-13-2009 06:53 AM:

Big difference in having the guts to climb a tree and shake a coon out alive to wrestle with the dogs and then let him go alive and just slobbered on ... and winging one out with a rifle.

Are you smart enough to understand that ?

The other post was about beaver .. best way is to shoot them dead , not trap them in a trap that squeezes them to death and is a danger to other animals.

Yes , I used to have roosters ... they had a fighting chance to live .. unlike the ones slaughtered for us to eat that have no chance to live free and die fighting.

... you don't stand a chance with me ... you are starting off defending the wrong side of an argument and wanting so bad to make me look bad that you forgot to think and actually read it all in context.

.. you can keep going though if your pride can stand it ...

Posted by Okie Dawg on 12-13-2009 07:16 AM:

Give it up Nukem. If he can climb a tree, knock a coon out, get back down the tree and take it away from the dog and it just be slobered on. His dogs can't kill a dog or are anti's too.

My hounds can't kill coon , they will bay and fuss with one .. but for every 100 people that think their dogs are gritty ... I can actually shake out healthy grown coon and suddenly .. they are bayers.

99.9% of you judge grit by winged out coon that fall down to several dogs .. or some little trapped coon dumped out to a pack of hounds ...
