well i can ask the same thing about walkers. like i sayed i know a guy started with one english gave up on her switched to walkers and is on his fourth and will tell ya how great they are.
Another guy had one redbone 2 years ago switched to walkers and hasn't had a real consitant walker yet and hates red bones. Now i'm not saying that it's the dogs when people go threw this many dogs you got a to wounder if its there taining ability but they still go back and back to the walkers over and over. and will down talk the first ones. makes no sense

Just because my walker dog flyes in there and trees in 5 minutes doesn't mean it's a hot track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good grief. Here's a thought that may blow youre mind.... Maybe she is just extremley gifted in nose power while ole boo hoo track dogs come into her tree 4 minutes late.
I don't and never will understand where you people come up with they are good competition dogs and not good pleasure dogs. I don't know about everyone else but I hunt the same dog when I pleasure hunt and competition hunt. I enjoy treeing 4 to 5 coon a night and not staying out 4 hours to do it. I have been with all breeds in all types of weather and the walker dogs nose power is greater then any other breed. The problem with the several bluetics I have hunted with is they walked me to den tree after den tree while my walker dog was off in the distance under a coon. Im not bad mouthing anyones dog or breed just stating walker dogs dominate the playing field simply because they are the best.

Not trying to step on any toes, just stating a fact. That's what there like around here and the ones I've hunted with in other places. Like I said there are exceptions but as a whole thats what I've seen.

one thing you guys are forgetting is that, it is o.k to bad mouth dogs as long as there not walkers.....
some can sure dish it out but they cant take it back.
i have hunted with alot of walkers and only a select few ran anything other that warm to hot tracks. that is why they are so called fast. put a walker and another breed side by side on a hot track and the walker will win. put them side by side on a freezin cold feeder track and watch the walker go 1/2 mile and find a hot one...thats the difference...could they work an old track?, probably, could they do it fast and accurite,? nope...

Everything in this sport is opinionated. Everyone has one and most people won't listen to others. You can all argue this till the day you die, but there are more walkers period (not saying that is why they win) but that is a fact. More people just hunt them, and there are definately good walkers, but there are good dogs in all breeds, and bad ones!!!!!

I read all these posts and it cracks me up that people think a walker wins because they pack, have a hot nose ,just tree all over and never hardly have a coon, then all the other breeds must really be lousy dogs if that dog you are describing wins over your chosen breed of dog.
I feed 4 walkers everyday, and if they were as some have described, believe me they would not be above ground eating anybodies food!
There are good dogs in all breeds, there is a lot of jealous people that are color blind,Walkers win, it has taken a lot of work by a lot of breeders to get them to dominate the way they do.
If you don`t like the fact that Walkers win, do something about it, work on a dog to beat them, the hunts are open competition, but don`t cut down every Walker dog just to make yourself feel better.....There is good ones, believe me!

For what it's worth
I think that there are three reasons for the popularity of the Walker breed.
1. During the early days of hound breeders the Walker breed had some very good breeders who were also very good promoters. They produced a good product and were able to tell the public about those hounds in a way that the public accepted. Some of the other breeds had several breeders producing good hounds but they were not good promoters, there were also good promoters that really didn't produce good hounds.
2. Because of the good foundation laid down by these early breeders the Walker breed today tends to produce hounds with very good athletics. When a Walker hound has the desire and brains to be a top hound you can rest assured that his athletics won't hold him back. That cannot be said about any other breed. Some bloodlines in every breed are like this but not breed wide.
3. The competition hunt rules have been written to favor a hound with the characteristics that the Walker breed tend to be strong in. Therefore the Walker breed has been able to build a long and impressive wining record in the competition hunts for decades. This allows today's breeders a ready made form of promoting their stud dogs. This continues the momentum that was started way back in the day by the foundation breeders of the Walker breed.

An old timer once told me...Do you want to hunt with your dog or hunt for you dog.
That's why I like my English male and female I have. They go out, hunt for 20-30 minutes and if they don't find a track, check back in and go a different way. I have never had to travel a great distance to find either one of them.
My male just made nitech, beating many Walkers to do so. The only thing I seen in common with all these Walkers is, that yes they are fast, first and first, but when it came to actually having a coon in the tree, I would say that 80% of them were slick. My dog will go off by himself and find his own track and tree and he had the coon 95% of the time. I have a list of references on him from guys that have hunted with him that will tell you this is true. I like my male because I can count on him, he may not be the fastest, but he is most assuredly, the most accurate around here. If you want phone numbers of the guys that hunted with him, PM me, I will be more then happy to provide them for you. He is by no means the best dog in the world, but for me, he is tops and can reproduce those qualities in his pups. I know that when he trees, I can almost guarantee there will be a coon in it.
There is good and bad dogs in all the breeds. We have had many Walkers over the course of time we have been in this great sport and only a few actually made coondogs. We have had Redbones and some were good, we had a Plott that was halfway decent and a few Blueticks that were more possum dogs then coondogs.
You all are beating a dead horse here. Everyone has their perferred breed and can tell you why they like it and why they don't like others. What the heck does it matter. A dog only has to please the person that owns it or hunts it. Bashing heads over who has the best breed and why, is simply immature and childish. I say, to each their own and happy hunting!

I have hunted black dogs for nearly 30 years. They have been my favorite even before I ever had any dogs. But I will say that hellcat said it right. I think that the breeders of yesteryear did a better job with the Walker breed, than did any other. They produced better tree hounds, quicker and earlier starters than any other breed. They are ahead of us now, but I think only in the number games. For everyone that wins, there are about 3 that loose. You have to consider all things. I need to compete, so my strain of black dogs hunt like walker dogs. If I ever loose this strain, then I will go to walkers.
I've never really had anything against Walkers. I just don't like the attitudes of a lot of folks that hunt them. Too many of them are under the false impression that if it ain't a Walker, it ain't a coondog. I'm hunting all curs now but the last two good hounds I had were Walkers. I had several folks stop by my house and say 'I never believed I would see a Walker here" my answer was'if you see a Walker here, you can bet he's a good one."

Look at the classifeids. You can always find a walker dog, regardless of the style of dog an individual likes you will see some dogs that sound interesting, dont get me wrong you still might wear out a pickup finding a good one but you will have a wide variety of types, styles and bloodlines to pick from and prices from 100 to 10,000. Now try to find a broke redbone orB&t and you will have to give your first born, if you can even find one. I have three dogs in my kennel right now, A walker a bluetick and a leopard cur so no one can say im color blind. If i was strictly a Comp. hunter i probably wouldnt own anything but walker dogs simply because as a whole they are better suited to the score card. Im gonna go out on a limb and say that if tomorrow there were no more Comp. hunts the walker breed would falll in popularity because lots of the top stud dogs just arent going to throw the type hound that is going to make a good pleasure hound for the average guy who wants to go for a walk in the woods with his buddies.
one thing i have noticed about walkers that i haven't seen in other breeds is that they will sort their tracks. I have treed coons on some bad nights off some rough tracks but if there is something better they can work faster they will do it. I want one to be able to work in the conditions that are thrown at them but if they can go a little farther and tree one fast i don't mind that. i will agree that some breeders have pushed the treeing a little to far and there are certain bloodlines that a little will go a long way, but you don't win often with a 50% accurate dog. I had a old blue dog with a super cold nose when i was a kid and i would nearly freeze in the winter listening to him work a track for 2 hours and thats not for me. he treed alot off coons just took to long.
well in two hunts i went to last month 13 trees and didnt see a coon until my RED dog SPILT TREED with the meat...Hunted a hunt last saturday didnt pull a walker and all dogs got under three coons went to 4 trees...

I hunted walkers because the guy that introduced me to coon hunting, hunted walkers. Walkers start early, are quick to tree, and have a medium nose. I've since had every breed that claimed to be a coon dog, and i'm settled on curs now. They tend to suit me more now than a hound. I'll never own another hound once I get rid of this last hound. I got a walker now that has all grands both sides in the three gen. papers and ain't worth a bullet. I just pleasure hunt, so I don't need papers or a hound.
To answer the question, it has to start with that very first hunt, atleast it did for me. You tend to hunt with whatever you were introduced to first.

Just starting out into coon hunting at the ripe age of 28. Been following hounds since I was 15, just thought wrestling and college were more important.
The guy I first started following ran Redbones and swore by them. At first I thought they were great cause I never had anything else to compare to. (Classical conditioning) Walkers were just ugly, long nosed, off game running fools. Now that I have my own blueticks my thoughts are that they are the best, yet I am looking for a nice walker to compliment them. We don't have big woods to hunt up here so a go deep dog usually ends up getting shot.
My point is that no matter what you will have "haters." Everyone is gunning for the winner, and wants to see them fall. Walkers win, and its a fact. Let them grow up some and you can have a cold nosed, track running, blow your eardrums out tree dog with a coon everytime. JMO

Walkers were bred to win....
The thing I have noticed about a walker dog is there super hard to beat when there hunted with a coondog. They open quick if not in your light soon after they get out of it. They often tailgate and will jerk a tree right out from under the dog doing the work. Yep there hard to beat.
