Very true Larry. Wesley you are right as well, there's no sense in a dog going that far around here. I can tollerate it every great once in a while but not often. I like my dogs to hunt a section out and come back if they don't find anything. Usually the only times any of my dogs have ever had/have a hard time treeing a coon is in a full moon when it's clear.

And I don't count den trees like many people do as treeing a coon unless I see the coon.

Granted, the full moon night was 4 dens and a hole, but the night after was 3 coon in about 45 minutes. Not bad for my up and coming pup.

I'd say maybe 200 yards. The first one I saw sitting up beside a rd on the place we were hutning and the dogs's hadn't gone that way. The second two were up a tree about 15 yards from the tree they were on with the coon.

id be tickled if i only had bad nites in the bright of the moon.

ive been hunting for over 40 yrs and still havent figured out what makes coon move or not. some nites youd think every coon alive would be moving and you cant hardly get a bark, and some nites when you think its a waste of time to go, theres coon everywhere.

I think you have to have a good broke dog and then they all make mistakes there's no perfect dog.Me and my uncle has treed 12 coons in last five nites.That's with a five year old dog and a 10 month old pup.Would you call that luck?

I've always found the coons seem to run more on full moons and usually when you find them in a tree all you see is fur, usually never get a eye.

Not too much difference around here where I am now. Maybe a little longer to strike a coon, a little longer track or a few more dens.

Back home there were alot more ground holes on bright nights, but there was plenty of ground holes anyway, just doubled them on the bright nights.

Coondogs find coons. It might take a long time to do it, but if it's a broke hound it will usually find one to tree no matter how bad the night.

There does seem to be a difference, but not enough to amount to much IMO. Still see coon, just not as many.

Coon move regardless around here and on full moon nights it's best to get on a river bottom or cut right in the swamps.

Ok for those that think a dog should be by itself and beat it if it isn't. Let me ask you. If you are in thin coon and one dog opens and your dog has nothing what is it supose to do.
If one dog opens on a track you your dog runs onto a track either infront of or behind the other dog and it turns out they are on the same track what are they to do.
Most dogs do not track,they trail. To do that they have to be down wind of the track. If one hot nosed dog runs 3 ft. down wind of the track and a cold nosed dog runs 20 ft. down wind of it. The hot nosed dog will never know the cold nose dog is there till they get to the tree. Now he ran the trackand he cant have the tree becouse some other dog got there first. I won't jack up my dog just becouse I am to proud to take second tree.
No offence folks but a dog can do a great job on a trail and have another dog cut the trail infront of him by shear luck of running in the right direction.

Coon do what they want , when they want ..... I've seen them in the middle of the day ... on full moons and no moons.

I don't think they sit in their dens on certain nights for any reason like the moon being out or the wind the wrong way.

As for independant dogs ... if my dog smells a coon track and barks , he better not quit for any reason .

If a dog quits a coon track and leaves to find another ... he'll never be the real deal , he'll start quitting on his terms instead of yours before long.

When they punch in for work .. they'll work hard , work right and work til' I say so ... you start trying to get fancy and the dog will learn to pull tricks on you.

Would you say 200 yards in a shorter track than normal for you?

I haven't been hunting for 40 yrs. but I was thinkin the same thing. One thing I'm convinced of is if something bad, odd, or just out of the ordinary is gonna happen, it seems like it's during a full moon.

I have treed 15 coon here in Ohio the past 2 nights all of which were good tracks but keep in mind no moon.

The previous week before that for 5 nights straight there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was extremely bright. I treed 4 coon in those 5 nights all of which there wasn't even a track bark. I think i'll believe my grandpa and my own experiences with a full moon over all you no offense of course.

When I had a walker dog that a guy once said while he was hunting with me 3 years ago "I have never seen a dog track a coon in crusty snow that was 2ft deep like he was looking at it. My male dog had the coldest nose on any dog I have ever been with to this day. He treed 3 coon that night and that guy tryed to buy him. He could tree coon in negative temps and snow 2 ft deep but even he had a very dificult time treeing them in a full moon. I walked to 2 slick trees in the thousands upon thousands of times I cut him loose. Had several people try to buy him. He was poisoned in my back yard while I was out of state for the weekend.

Obviously there's something about a full moon that coon do not like otherwise every month on here when the full moon is up people wouldn't be saying full moon this, full moon that. A little common sense goes a long way sometimes.

My Obsevations on a Full Moon

1. Coon know it is bright out so they are more at risk.
2. More Den trees and holes than usual because some coon tend to stay closer to home.
3. More slicks than usual because those coon farther away from home tend to be feeding up more trees faster, after all they too can see better to feed thus cover more ground and more trees in the woods with scent on em.. If a dog doesn't check wide enough he will get stuck on a slick.

These are my observations here in SW Pa. we tree plenty of coon on moonlight nights but also see more dens, holes and slicks than usual.... a good solid coondog that checks trees well before setting down to tree will do ok, none are perfect and will miss sometimes, that bright moon just seems to be more on the coons side than the hounds..

i think theres some truth in that ---

coon naturaly move more in the dark --

ive treed a lot of coon in the middle of the day by accident

an old timer told me a long time ago---

-when moon is brite , you have to hunt in the shade-

if you had to tree a coon in the daytime , where would you go ?

My experience has been the same as a few of the others. Bright night, no coon. Normally all the crops are out of the field by now, but because of the wet October, there is a lot of standing corn. My assumption would be that the little ricky's are out in it getting fat. Yet amazingly we have not seen any dead coon on the road, or any moving when we are driving around from one spot to another.
Tonight my blue's milled around a field where the coon were feeding a couple days ago, the English we run was slick treeing and finding dens, and the Walker did not open up at all. Normally now there are lots of coon to be had. Before the brightness, it was easy to take 15 coon a night. Since wednesday, our efforts have yielded 2 tree'd, one caught on the ground, and two from a barn.
Will have to agree with others, on nights like this it takes a better coon dog than mine to find em.
