I have had 2 Great Danes that were yard dogs but were good at treeing coon . Opened good and treed good . they are just big hounds, but are hounds . Its a shame everyone cuts thier long ears off and crops them.

My boxer, she would go in after a coon in places the hounds wouldn't go, no stopping sense tho which got her into trouble more than once.

I got a Great Dane and a Bouvier des Flanders that both stay in the yard and will bark at coons but I've never tried to see if they'll tree em or anything/
Use to be a farmer that had a german shepard, that dog would go right along with the hounds.
dog
I know a man that had a pet deer the deer thinks he is a dog.The deer does everything the dog do. They dogs are big redbone the deer goes to the tree with them he will stay at the tree till the dogs leave or someone comes down there and shoots the coon out. This is the true. I know this man real good.
When I was a teenager, My dad had a red heeler female he would turn loose from the house and she would almost always have a coon treed in the timber across the road, in the daytime. I don't remember ever hunting her at night, or even training her. We'd just go down there and roll the coon out to her and head back to the house.
Think the oddest for me was when I was a teenager my Alaskan Malamute tracked and treed a few. A couple times she'd bring one home she caught on the ground.
Over the years I have seen a lot of breeds chase coon. Toy Fox Terrier to mastiff.
Seen a pit and a lab with a coon up a tree. Ran them off and jumped the coon for pups (was coming home from bear hunting so had the hounds with).
Growing up a lot of field trial people ran pointer or greyhound crosses
and greyhounds in water races and coon trials.
Old border collie treed a lion on his own.
I can say, I have never seen a bulldog run, track, or tree anything. Growing up in the country I've seen or heard about a lot of dogs going ape on pesky coons. Both house dogs and farm dogs.
Was at a friend's house once (who was having coon issues) and while watching tv the cats broke into a frenzy on the front porch. Looked out window and 3 of the cats were having a stand off with a young coon on the porch. The cats chased it off the porch and it went up a tree in the back yard. Since you can't shoot a gun in town...her son nailed it with his bow.
Just about anything will go after an intruder. Especially if it is trying to eat the food on the porch.

terrier
My buddy has a jagd terrier that will open trail and tree a coon. One time we where trying to start some pups with a turn out coon pups lost it so went and got the good old dog. She couldn't find it either turned out the terrier it ran that track like it was looking at it for over 3/4 of a mile and caught that bugger on the ground. Only problem is it is trashy as all get out and will trail deer coyote fox cats sasquatch or pretty much anything with fur. Tough as nails in a hole though it weighs around the fifteen pounds and will flat push a coyote out of a culvert and can drag a coon twice its size out of a hole.

She never treed with another dog.
She never opened on track.
Had the meat every time.
Had as steady chop as you ever heard.
Even though she was supposd to stay at the truck she just couldn't help it sometimes.
The only dog we ever treed a bobcat with.

I know a guy that had a goat that would tree with another dog. he was going to breed it to trackman but he never could catch it in heat. I think it was just a "me to" goat. lol
My brother had a Sheltie Collie that would track tree open as you could want on all.
That's the small kind, she ran with my Redbones and they caught and killed a pile of coon around my house by themselves. It might take them several days but they'd drag their catch to the house. Worked alright except during the summer then mom got pretty upset about them putting the coons on the porch.
