I pared down the amount of hounds, to one single hound, and I can afford that $40 bag of feed every 4-5 weeks. It's cheaper than trying to feed 4 or 5 hounds on 3-4 $25 bags of feed in a month.

i totaly understand what your saying. I hunt and feed 1 hound and im really not all that concerned on what i pay for dog food. if i had to spend 100 bucks a bag on food for him to look good i would. I was just saying i found a feed (pro plan) for around 40 bucks a bag that my dog does great on so thats what im staying with.

I feed Sexton Bros, white bag. $18

That bag will my 3 dogs for nearly 2 full weeks. They look great, are muscled up well, not fat, not thin, shiny coats and can hunt every night of the week and still look healthy and not lose any weight. I get compliments on how my dogs look everywhere we go. My vet thinks they look good as well.

If you want to buy some designer brand dog food that sells itself with a picture of a buffalo on the bag and the catchy word"natural" on it, more power to you. You might as well buy some sirloin steaks from the market and cook them for your dog while you are at it.

Good post, I completely agree. This spring I found myself with 8 dogs and going through a 50 pound bag of feed every 6 days. Now I have 4 and a pup and have started feeding Purina Pro Plan and my feedbill is less than what it was when I was feeding the 20$ a bag feeds. My dogs look much better and hunt better as well.

Most people don't realize the difference it will make in a dog to feed it a premium feed as opposed to the 20$ a bag feeds. I bought my first bag of Pro Plan out of curiousity as much as anything else and the difference in thier coat, energy, stamina, and stool made me a believer in it. Dog food is just like everything else in this world, you get what you pay for.

You should stick to politics

If I could buy enough sirloin steaks to feed this little fella for 3-5 weeks for $42 I would. Wouldn't you?

Heck If I could eat steak daily for $42 and have it last me 3-5 weeks, I would!

The picture of the buffalo on the front had nothing to do with it. My dog hunts hard, he does everything I ask of him, he earns his keep. He looks great, he acts great. Here is what sold me on it.....ready....you sure? I liked the ingredients, tried it for a month, and decided that I owed it to the dog, to give him the best I could. If I could get what I get in that bag for half price, I would! Wouldn't you? Sure you would, but.. YOU CANT!

Tbeyer, Thousands of dogs can out perform your and my dog any day of thew week on feed that costs 1/3 of what yours does and still have a clean bill of health week in and week out.
I am mainly a bear hunter. we have hunted our dogs nearly 20 days last month alone and they are no worse for wear than when the season began except a little more muscled up and lean, mean bear running machines. If my $18 bag of fed can keep them in this good of shape I will stick with it. I have fed the expensive stuff and all I got was a smaller wallet.

If it makes you feel better and "better than others", by all means, Feed the expensive designer feed. Good for you. Your dog could really care less. He is going to eat what you put in front of him and perform to his genetic ability whether he is eating Sextons, "buffalo nuggets", or table scraps.

It does not at all make me feel better than others. I was simply responding to you, and no, I am by no means any better than you. This thread is about what food. A person or two made a couple of comments directly to me, I responded. You chose to jump on the band wagon and call me out, I responded. It in no means is personal, just my opinion. I stated what worked best for me, and my modest hound. Get over yourself.

I have nothing to "get over". I am not the one on here acting "high brow" and condescending to people who choose to feed something different than I do.

As to the performing to his genetics remark, I would submit this.

Genetically, I should be shaped like my Grandfather, lean and wiry, however, somewhere around the time that I graduated high school, I fell in love with Big Macs and Fries. Now those have huge amounts of fat and even some protein. The meat that is used in those sandwiches is processed heavily. Therefore it probably is not as good as that steak that was simply cut up and packaged from the butcher. Because of Genetics, I have the opportunity to be wiry and lean, but through my choice of diet and subsequent willingness to not workout as much as I used to, I am a little chunkier than Grandpa was.

Feed made the difference. My choice of Feed made the difference. Nothing wrong with what you are feeding by any means, I don't think I said there was. I have tried numerous types of feed, in numerous price ranges. So far, I haven't come across anything in my area that competes with this. I might start looking should I find a problem with it, but until I do, I see no reason to stop feeding it.

Also, keep in mind, I am only feeding one hound, this food does go a long way. It isn't like I am going through a bad a week or even two weeks. Starting my third week today, and I have 60% left in the bag. It works for me, it may not for you. I do not begrudge anyone the right to feed whatever they want, I simply stated what I was feeding and why. I do not have some kind of a superiority complex, or anything like that, just stating some opinions.

The ingredients on the back of that buffalo are what you should be looking at ...

ProPlan , Canidae , Taste of the Wild , Bil-Jac ... they have no equal ... nothing to do with price ,package or marketing .. it's all about the ingredients.

Diamond Extreme Athlete and Naturals are the best choice underneath those for the money .. and mixing a little of those top tier brands in works really well.

You will hear 100% of the time from folks that sucked it up and went to ProPlan and such ... it is cheaper ...

.. if you can feed better for less money .. why not ?

Hey thickcoon, if anything that I said to you was taken as an attack, I apoligize, I did not mean it in that fashion. I figured you understood that, some people must think I was attacking you. I am sorry if it came across as such.

Justin, I think we are on the same page, you probably explained what I was getting at better than I did.

If you feed the recommended amount it doesn't really cost you more to feed the higher priced feeds. My female that eats Pro Plan Performance is just on her second bag and I started her on it the 5th day of August. She weighs about 45-50 pounds and I feed her 2 1/2 to 3 cups a day.

food for thought

we all do need to read the ingredients because if we only look at the amount of protien and fat some people do not relize that not all those proteins are digestable proteins the bag may read 24% protein but may only be 60% digestable and if you feed a feed that is 22% protein that is 90% digestable you get more bang for your buck.

I fed the diamond extreme athlete for a few years until I moved up to alaska and was having a hard time finding it. So I started looking at all the brands up here ( and there are a ton of them) and flipping the bags over looking at the ingredients it turned out that costco's brand of food was about the best food without the "premium type" food prices. I've been feeding it for about 4 months now and my dogs look real good on it. I can't say it cleans up real good becouse my dogs love to eat pasture muffins(horse crap) which makes them go a little more often.

food

Caninae has a more ballenced fat to protine ratio with 24% protine and 16% fat and my dogs do great on it. Its 49.99 for a 44 pound bag so its probly not for those that keep alot of hounds but if you only have one or two thats not to bad a deal. They stay healtheir, have more energy, better aperence, less cleen up and belive it or not, even smell better. For a hound that goes out and works his tail off each and every nite to please me, Id say thats the least I can do. If there was somthing out there better than Caninea and it cost more Id gladdly pay it if my hounds would benifit.

I feed Hi-Standard because I know what my dogs are getting. 100% soy free. I feel that this Hi-Standard is better than all of your top dollars bags on the market. My vet ask me the last time I was in to bring her some samples because the dogs looked so good. I feed a lot less per feeding due to the kernel size. I know of one that is feeding it and is feeding 3 70LBS labs and getting almost 2 months on a bag.

Just my thoughts!
