All dogs carry mites. Harmless. Dogs with weak immunes systems are affected by them. That is where genetics come in. You don't want to breed dogs with weak immune systems.

Sometimes stress/sickness can cause a dogs immune system to be low, hence, allowing them to be affected by the mite.

Most dogs will outgrow this condition by 2 years old. Those that don't have a strong genetic tie to it, and should not be used in breeding.

Ivomec and ProMeris topically (amitraz) will clear it up for good if the dog has a normal immune system.

The only thing Burnt Motor oil does is clog the pores in a dogs skin, which may in a way suffocate some of the mites. I would imagine that it's not a real good idea.

Red Mange

There is NO cure for red mange..... If you breed a hound with red mange the pups will be at high risk of carrying red mange... If you use the ivormec the mange will dry up but anything can retrigger the red mange such as stress, or excitement on a tree! Best thing is to have the dog put down, If not they will endlessly pace in the kennel until they become to poor to stand.

Well I have a 2 year old hound that had it at about 7 months old, and he has never had it again. He's even been sick and has not had a reccurance.

If they have a suppressed immune system for any reason they can catch it.

It's not always hereditary. In those cases it is CUREABLE. Usually the kind that is hereditary speads over the whole body. If it is localized, then there was another underlying issue.

If your dog has hereditary issues, then it will most likely occur again. It's worse in young dogs and older dogs.

SOMETIMES, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, IT WILL NOT GO AWAY. NO MATTER HOW MANY TREATMENTS OR VET VISITS YOU DO.

PROBABLY ONE OF THE NICEST EARLIEST STARTING LIL GYPS WE EVER HAD WE HAD TO HAVE PUT DOWN BECAUSE OF RED MANGE.

WE TREATED HER FOR 4 MONTHS, AND SHE JUST WOULDNT GET OVER IT. IT GOT TO THE POINT OF WHERE SHE COULDNT WALK, COULDNT LAY DOWN, WAS TOTALLY MISERABLE, ALL SHE DID WAS SCRATCH AND SHE HAD SCRATCHED UNTIL SHE HAD BIG OPEN SORES, AND WE WENT TO THE VET ALMOST WEEKLY AND NOTHING WORKED, AND I JUST COULDNT STAND TO SEE HER SUFFERING ANYMORE. IT BROKE MY HEART TO BECAUSE I GOT REALLY ATTACHED TO HER. BUT IT WAS WHAT WAS BEST FOR HER.

I can guarantee you not all cases of mange are Hereditary.

A dog being sick from something then catching mange because it's immune system was suppressed has nothing to do with hereditary. Especially when it clears up on its own and never comes back.

There are only two types of mange.

Saracoptic which is the contagious kind

Demodex which is "redmange" that isn't contagious and is from a dog having a weak immune system. The only part that is hereditary is the immune system. And at that not all dogs that catch Demodex have immune system issues because of genetics. Sometimes dogs get sick and stressed, and the mange can take over. A dog with chronic "reoccurances" have hereditary issues. But the ones that it stays localized and clears up on it's own, that's not hereditary.
