Like JiM said, their are a few major hunts held in the winter and the same dogs win them that win in the summertime too.
The guys winning these big hunts know what a world class hound is and wont settle for one that dont tree coon.

Get a better dog or a new excuse, thissn is wore out,

It's about accountability. A dog that leaves a tree is held accountable. A dog that trees a possum is held accountable. But a slick treeing dog is normally not even held accountable in the winter time, much less with the leaves on.

Leaves or not you better believe my dogs are held accountable. As with most of the Joe's I hunt with. I hate slick treeing idiots. I can't stand when someone brings one to the hunts and they tree 5+ times with the leaves on and get them all circled cause its a big tree and they "think" one "could" still be clear in the top out of sight. I witnessed the term "circle slick" at Autumn Oaks this year. Like one honest handler said you have had 10 minutes to show me the could be coon. 2 dogs were there and it got circled. The base of the tree was 10" around. I was ill.
