I have a dog that was diagnosed with 'late stage' renal failure almost two years ago, and he's still alive and doing great. Do some research before you make the decision to put him down - there are lots of things you can do.....
We tried some of the prescription kidney foods, and he didn't do well on them, so now he gets 1/4 can of Renal MP canned food mixed in with his regular kibble.
The two most important things we do is that he gets Fortikor (prescription med from the vet), and 1 tablespoon a day of ground eggshells.
He also gets omega oils, Vit E and CoQ10, all supplements that help him deal with the kidney failure.
The most important thing is to keep him hydrated (by sub Q fluids, if necessary) and keep him eating while the drugs and supplements have a chance to get working.

Thanks everyone. I left him at the vet's office today in Welcome, N.C. He is doing extensive blood work on him. The vet that diagnosed him only performed one test; they are going to perform two. Dr. said that a lot of things could cause this problem.
He is going to get some I V's going. Andy has really lost a lot of weight in a short period of time. I should know the results on Tues. around noon. I told the vet that I am willing to do what I have to do if I can keep him around.

GOOD LUCK!

Glad to hear the vets will be working hard to see what they can do to help Andy.
Was thinking about you alot yesterday... my old cat, Bobby had been suffering with Kidney and thyroid disease for years. He was treated for a long time successfully but the Thyroid meds were worsening his kidney function. Months ago we took him off the meds, expecting him to have heart failure soon.... well, he did great... ate, ran, played and never seemed like a 15 yr old feral cat... Yesterday morning he "went off to die" in a place in the basement... I knew he didn't want me to hold him... so I walked away letting him know I loved him and if he was ready to go I was willing to let him.... I was really hoping the old boy would NOT have to take another trip to the vet and see yet another needle... He was NOT suffering AT all or he'd have gone to the vet. I came back up to the house, reflected on those 15 wonderful years we had shared, all the people he knew etc... and I thought about YOU and your dog... and I prayed that he would have a chance for some GOOD quality life. I prayed that my cat would not suffer and that I would always have to strength to make the right choices with my animals... I thanked God for giving us animals to bring us such joy and also just for being so Good to us faulty humans...
When I went down to feed the cats in the afternoon Bobby had died. I felt relief that he didn't have to suffer or get that needle prick... he loved our vets but he hated to give blood... or get an IV... Relief, sadness, joy for the shared years... so much emotion...
We will continue to pray for Andy. We will continue to pray for you and your family....
Sincerely, Heather

I don’t think Craig has been on this thread in a while he made a new one for Andy. I’m sad to say that Andy did not make it. Craig did make a new post but it is listed under Coonhound Classifieds in the Blue Tick page I believe he titled as "Had to put Andy down", this was a real shocker. There are some pics and videos of Andy there to commemorate him. Andy was a real hound and will be missed, losing him was a big loss he had a lot to offer. His blood will carry on through his offspring but we’ll never see the full effect of how his contributions could have impacted our breed.
