The male dog we use and all are pups are out of had rickets when he was a pup and had it bad he never got all the way over it he can stand stradle of a 5 gallon bucket but let me tell ya i has not slowed him down a buddy of mine says he is built for speed

We put cod liver oil in with our pup's feed. About a tea spoon a day. I have had buddys whose dogs had rickets. Within a few days of cod liver oil, the problem was solved. We have never hadanyproblems from giving cod liver oil. We have raised a lot of pups over the years.

Started today

Started the cod liver oil ( 1 teaspoon) in the food today and plenty of available sunshine. Also started transitioning to our regular "DOG" feed from the high protien/fat pup feed. Will post progress as we go along.

..just hope you have good luck with the pup! I know the Vit D and sunshine help and they are usually A Ok!
These posts bum me out...LOL... I had a SEVERE Vit D deficiency a couple yrs ago...got real sick... REAL sick.. stupidly sick as my friends know...since I scared my hubby tons.... I've been doing pretty well BUT... darned if I don't have a deficiency again... LOL... back on more supplements and more iron since I'm anemic again too! I think my parents must have raised me on the wrong dog food LOL... Seriously my Vit D def. is probably 100% from not drinking any milk as a kid... ate cheese, thought that made up for the calcium...but the Drs didn't know about Vit D and humans back then... Go FIgure... I HATE milk... but I have cereal with milk now (GAG) every day...
sometimes these puppy posts help give me a reminder to get some midday sun... force down that dreaded cereal etc...

Aren't the coonhunters a great bunch of people to offer up such quick advice?

Heather, you are so right about the quick advice thing. There have been some input from other breed people to the post as well as the coonhunting community. I have found through the years that "Dog" folks are great folks. This is the first "help" thread that I have ever posted and I have been overwhelmed with the response. This is a wonderful tool. Thanks to all.

I dont know what kind of floor your kennel is but I had a pup thats legs startet doing the same thing and some guys where im from said that a vet told them that a wood floor pen will make a young pup do that . . .

Well anyways I moved my pup to a friends concrete floor kennel for a few months and her legs straightened up completely and then I put her back in the wood floor pen when she was done growing and she did fine. Just thought i would share that with you

Nice hounds

Sam, you folks have your game on no doubt. I have brought pups home and put them dirrectly on cement and never experienced knuckling over problems until now. I suppose it has everything to do with the particular animal. I would think it could be possible to see this problem on just about any surface but it appears to be less likely on a more pliable surface such as rubber matting or good ol Gods Green earth.

i have had two black&tan pups that did the same thing.i ask the vet. he told me to get some powdered non fat milk and mix it in there food.he said it is not fatten,and has calcium to promote good bone growth.

I agree and dissagree they all can get it and dont matter what their on. As for taking care for them I take as good a care as any and better than most and 50-75 %of my american bull pups get it it boils down to low CALCIUM!!! and vitamin D.

yes the red pup straightened up in a week or so.

All females get Showtime Puppy after being bred and untill pups are 6 weeks. They also get the same vitamins as the pups from breeding till their back to Health Everyday. The Ricets start after their off the female so they get 1 a days twice a day untill their off the Meat after that their fine.

I don't know nothing about bulldogs.
Is this common in American Bulldogs?

YES

Yes in dogs I'v bred My Vet told me years ago to use the methed I use and it works for me it is contributed to the meat being fed after weaning. Remember 50-75% of the litters i'v had were all like this and i'v never had a problem with the pups after they straightin up.

1 - Is it common in the breed itself? Or just the ones you've bred?

2 - Are you saying that feeding them meat causes it?

Yes

yes its common in the breed and yes the meat contributes to the the problem. I know breeders that feed puppy food after weaning and some pups still get it but not as often.


N2BLU sorry for your tread being out of controll. I will gladlly share my experience with anyone interested but please PM me as to keep this tread on topic and respect N2BLU.

I know Bulls have nothing to do with coonhounds and I have never seen it in any that I have raised if I do I'll use the same methed is I have allways used.

Okay folks thanks for bringing things back into prespective here. This has been an informative and helpful thread. After 3 days of plenty of sunshine and 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil (compromise), mixed with the transitioning puppy to dog food, Little Miss Southern Blue Delight is showing a 70-80% improvement. There is probably one factor that contributes to the improvement more than the others but this combination is working great! I will continue to post progress. I wish I were camera and computer savy enough so that I could post pics of the progress.

Update

After 6 days on the Cod Liver oil , sunshine and transitioning puppy to dog food , I can see little to no signs of bowing or knuckling over. Amazing! We will continue the plan through Sat. and ease back on the CLO to about 1/2 a teaspoon for a while.
My hopes have returned !!!!!
Hopefully this will help someone else in the future. Thanks to all again.
