My parents live literally walking distance from the lake, and I thought about swimming them some while I'm there for work during the week. Not really sure how to go about it though...I'd have to either walk them from the bank or throw them off a dock haha!

yeah that is true, never really thought of that since it isn't really a problem around here living on a island water is pleantyful.
I take them by myself, if they'll go in by themselves I just turn them loose if not I go in myself and lead them around.

Well, I figured out one way to run them while I'm at my parents' place for work. It's pretty hilarious, but hey, it works...my parents have about a 3 acre yard, so I got on the riding lawn mower and ran my blueticks around off it. Was afraid they'd be scared of the noise, but I had my mom crank it up and move forward while I walked them beside it a bit. I think they liked it, but once they get in better shape it might not be fast enough LOL...

No one has chimed in with a bicycle reply. During our quiet time I have tried everything to excercise our dogs. Unless you are very atheletic, I don't recommend using a bike! Trust me, when I say it can get touch and go. Last year, I had a young male that I thought was doing well so I let him crank up the speed. Then he cut right in front of me. I literally stood the bike up on its front tire amd managed to set the bike back down then the dog step back in front of me. I sort of speared a very sensitive area with the bike seat. A young couple witnessed the event and asked if I was o.k. At the time I was on my knees trying to get my breath back. My answer was NO! Not Really! They did not reply, but quietly proceeded down the path.

So the moral of the story is a bike is not a good idea.

Mr. Atherton, I initially thought about trying the bike idea. What I liked about walking alongside my dogs was that I got some exercise too, which I DEFINITELY need since I've had a desk job for the past couple years. You just have to walk a dog SO long to really be doing any good, and when you have 4-5 hounds you're trying to condition like I do it gets awful time consuming. Not to mention I'm not quite in good enough shape to keep a pace that they can trot at for 2-3 miles right now LOL.

I did see an apparatus made for biking with dogs that attaches to the bike and is supposed to absorb the shock if the dog pulls. Might be worth a try, but I think it was kind of pricey to get just to "try." Without something like that I can what happened to you happening to me, or them pulling me off the road haha!

I have seen dog walkers, smaller scale than a horse walker.

HUNT THEM AND THEY WILL GET CONDITIONED AND PROVE THEY ARE WORTHY OF A BENCH SHOW.

Burdette, my dogs actually do hunt. As a matter of fact every dog that I've put on a bench this year has been in the woods, and each is currently being trained to hunt as well. The blue female that I've had the most "show" success with can *GASP* tree her own coon, and I'm not talking a turnout coon. I asked about conditioning these dogs because I'm back and forth between 2 places every week for work, and I can't be in the woods 5 nights a week right now. Not my personal preference, but I've got to make the money to continue paying for this expensive hobby. Not everyone who shows dogs ONLY puts their dogs on the bench...

I have no use for a show dog only. Don't get me wrong, I like a good looking hound thats a coondog. Some would have no use for an ugly coon treeing machine. I do know the show people have techniques that work. Feeding them cottage cheese or other stuff to make them show good. Roading them muscles and tightens the feet. I am so glad that we all don't like the same thing.

thats good then they should look good enough to show. dont be like most of the rest of the show world and make your dog look like a bone pile. p.s. i used to show alot and the best way i made my dogs look good was cutting their food to smaller portions and feeding them more time a day. i also roaded them with a 4 wheeler daily. JUST BECAREFUL YOU DONT RUN OVER THEM.

Thanks Jake. I wondered if feeding them smaller portions several times a day was beneficial. I cut their feed in half and feed them twice a day when we're out of town during the week, but I'll be the first to admit that I get lazy about that when we're at home if I'm not hunting that night.
