-- Just have to vent...bad experience at the vet's. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=276695)
WOW
I would have removed my dog immediately after the male tech's remark - and I would have STORMED OUT making very audible remarks in the waiting room for clients to hear as I slammed the door behind me. Then, I would have called the BBB and ALSO checked on the actual qualifications (training/education) of ALL of the techs at that facility. Sounds like a sorry staff. I also don't understand why you'd be getting a HW test on an 8-mo-old pup if you've had him on HW preventative.
Sure hope you get to VENT to authorities & also get some satisfaction from talking to the VET when you tell him what happened.

you certainly need to be praised for your patience.
i had a similar icident at petsmart. mt walker/bluetick cross is a huge 80lb dog and has a fettish about her nails and feet. doesn't want them touched. she has never been abused just has had this thing about her feet since a pup. i used to take her to petsmart and they would do them with a portable extremely quiet drommel. it was just something about getting to go somewhere and the fact that the one tech there treated her like a queen that patches would like and she would co operate.
well i went to take her in one day and the usual tech wasn;'t there. i was going to leave and come back again but i was assured tat this 'new' girl would be as good. famous last words. first thing she takes my dog and tells me i can't come behind the counter with her. she then puts patches up on the grooming table and puts a neck loop on her. i am arguing with her about that and she pulls out the clippers. i tell her you can't use those. this girl looks down her nose at me and tells me that she is the professional. i'm halfway through the counter gate at this point when she picks up one of patches' paws and attempts to clip a nail. well all he!! breaks loose. patches freaks and attempts to get awy by jumping off the table. the neck loop is there and now she is strangling. the 'professional' just screams and jumps out of the way. my daughter and i grabbed the dog got the loop off her and calm her. this girl is now rambling about uncontrolable dogs but i'm not listening as i have my dog and i'm out of the room. the grooming room is up by the check out and the doors. i'm so mad now that i couldn't care less about anyone or anything. i got out of the room and yell at the top iof my lungs that they have 2mins to get me a manager. i think it took them all of a minute to have one up front. when all was said and done i ended up with all kinds of coupons and free merchandise and apologies. but the bottom line is: i have never taken my dog back.
and if a vet tech had the nerve to tell me my dog wasn't worth it i would have done the same thing. caused a comotion until someone of authority came to take care of me. if they can't provide customer service they don't deserve to be in business. those idiots at that vet clinic shouldn't be there at all. i wouldn't waste time talking to them, i would be calling the better business bureau, and the vet association.

Sorry to hear
of your bad experience at this Vet, but not all are like that. I have a good couple of Vets I use one is a Male & the other Female both are very good with my dogs. I had a English Male that Perry Hudspeth owns that I use to have and I messed him up when it came to giving shots. I mistakenly use a cow needle on him once and he never forgot it. So needless to say you better not come close to him with a needle he would eat your butt up. So my Male vet always had a struggle with Ole Fathead but he always got the job done. I won't ever forget when I carried him up there for the rabies shots. I told him I got one may give you some trouble. He said I am not worried about it he will be fine. NOT!!!! LOL!! Next thing I know he said take him inside and they did have to hold him down to get the shot but once it was over he was up wagging his tail and licking on Vet. So I don't think you handled yourself in a bad way but I think you should have spoken up when that guy ran off at the mouth. He has no right to say those things working in that kind of environment. JMO!!! Good luck from here on out.

After reading all this Bull $$ht on here....Give fido a tranquillizer on the way to the vet by the time you get there hell be in La La land ....Problem solved....JMO....Yesterday I just had a 81lb Blue neutered due to reoccuring Prostrate problems...What a diffrence in vet prices....$120 to 375+
personally i would bring my hound into a large animal vet over any other clinic.
they're way more knowlegable and understanding. you won't have the comments from a vet thinking every dog should sleep on the couch and chase a ball all day. large animal vets understand and appreciate a working animal. last time i took my dog in was to a large animal vet, young dog who was really unsure of it all. one tech held the dog, cradled it to restrain it and just calmy talked the dog down and kept it's vision blocked. the dog instantly calmed and tolerated it. maybe it was a pressure point or something lol but they had excellent control of that dog. i would never tolerate the comments made by the techs at your local clinic.
As a Tech I know exactly what your talking about. If you are alone (no one to hold the vien) pulling blood especially on a nervous dog, you want it done right the first time, therfore you need a tournauet.
Now I know it is our clinic's policy that something as simple as Vaccines and whatnot are "NOT WORTH" getting bit over. We are to do the best we can, but if the owners do not want to pay a large 'agressive animal' handling fee, or sedate the dog, then we are not going to get bit. If the dog was ill or dying, then yes, we will do all we can to help. But just trying to do something simple on a dog with a bad temperement isn't worth getting anyone hurt, including the owners! Cause most Vet's insurance does not cover an Owner getting bit by thier own dog. Once you leave the waiting room, the animals are supposed to be totally in the Vet/Tech's control. So therefore if you get bit, they are at fault.
Now he should not have said that in front of you, but that's usually what most Vet Hospitals policys are, don't get hurt, don't let the owner get hurt, and don't hurt the pet, nothing is worth all the trauma.

I don't in any way, shape, or form believe that the staff should have been put at risk while working on my dog. However, I did advise them from the moment I walked in the room that the dog would probably be hard to handle. I was also the one that insisted he be muzzled because I DIDN'T want him to injure anyone. If from that point on the techs in question didn't believe they could perform their job safely without sedating the dog, they should have indicated such. I wasn't opposed to having the dog sedated, but none of the staff in the room offered to do so. I would have greatly preferred that he be sedated rather than be traumatized by the experience.
The point of the matter is the staff was highly unprofessional and the situation was handled in a totally unacceptable manner. If I'm going to pay the high cost of veterinary care I expect my dog to be treated by staff that knows what they are doing, period. That includes knowing how to handle animals with different temperaments, how to restrain them properly, and knowing when an animal should be sedated. Experiences like this are why I try to only use a vet when I absolutely can't do something at home, such as diagnostic tests and rabies vaccinations.

I must be lucky, I have 3 vets that is within an hour that seem to do a good job, I use each for different reasons. 2 are very perfessional and always takes excellent care of my dogs and are good people. The third I just use for stuff I do myself without having to haul a dog in and pay office fees for little pitly stuff.

you should have seen my redtick at the vet mwwaahaahahaha, i prolly shouldnt laugh, it was WILD, she was so scared i couldnt even get near her, she was backed up in the corner and we were trying to get a muzzle on her but she did not want to, our vet was actually pretty good at it though, i dont know how he did it
Jessica did you get to talk to the vet there yet? I'm sooooo lucky had to take one to the vet yesterday for ears and he was nervous. She's so good with him takes her time and never rushes.

Sorry
WHAT ? As soon as the tech started in with the attitude towards the dog, my protective instincts would have kicked in and shut him down.
second I know we are to be meek christian people. but meek doesnt mean like a mouse in the corner subdued to wicked behavior.
fight for what you have or you dont deserve to have it.
like I said to start "sorry", on many levels and hope you learned many valuable lessons through all of this, and these postings.

There's so many things they could have done different but not listening to your suggestion from the start was the most unforgivable one. You know your dog and thought a muzzle was a good place to start. Many years back we had a 14 lb dachshund that did not like blood draws. Those little stinkers are not born with long enough handles so it was three vet techs trying to hold him still to get a blood sample. I called a time out and we rethought the game plan. I said lets do this, I will rub the sweet spot on the bridge of his nose while you try to get your sample. I did that hypnotizing rubbing on his nose and he closed his eyes while the vet stuck and drew the sample. No wiggles, no wrestling holds, no bites just a mellow little dude and five minutes before he was a micro monster. Don't use a vet that treats you like you don't know much. Sure they had their schooling and experience but you live with your dogs.
Take him to Dr. Rauton in Johnston, SC. A little out of your way but you will NOT be treated bad and you don't need an appointment. Good hours (8-6 Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. and half a day Sat.). He'll even come to your truck and draw blood in the parking lot if dog don't like being in the office. 803-275-4652.

bad techs!
Here's a link......
http://www.llr.state.sc.us/pol/vete...e=complaint.htm
Since Monday is a holiday, you probably won't be able to tear into the owner/Vet like you would like....but I do believe that going through an actual complaint process is much more likely to bother this clinic than your verbal venting.
You and your dog were both treated very poorly and I'd love to see you actually get this guy where it might do some good.
You have learned a tough lesson that will only improve your dogs treatments in the future. This was a bad one, but think of how great it is that you will never take a dog there with a life threatening injury......good luck finding your new Vet!
Cliff Williams
My wife took her chihuahua to a vet because she needed a c section, they sedated the dog and delivered the pups and sent her home with the dog out cold.Well next morning the dog is still not coming around and she calls but the vet is gone and they tell her to try cell, she calls and leaves messages at his home, office, cell but he does'nt return the calls so she found another vet that was open(this is the weekend, they are closed here)for emergency calls. He tries but cannot save the mama dog or pups.He said the other vet over sedated her.
She calls the office of the first vet Monday morning and tells him what has happened. His exact words"I got your messages but was on an outing with my family"She said why could'nt you have at least called for a few seconds and gave me some advice? He said "because I figured your dog was already dead or you found another vet"
I thought this was pretty cold, not to mention very unprofessinal
Jessica, I think you handled the cituation as best you could. Making a scene solves nothing and you were better off not even responding to the dummy that made the ignorant comment. You can do more by word of mouth, plus the better buisness bureau, and the lack of buisness they will be getting from you and all that are made aware of their treatment of clients. In my early years I was a vet tech and I can tell you, we never treated a client in that manner. We would have lost our job. The vets are in business to perform a service and good client relations is part of that service! There are many dogs that have one bad experience at a vet clinic and respond the way your dog did. The problem, and I see in in my area too, is you have techs that have no training, are always in a hurry, and do not understand animal behavior. With a little patience and time the situation could be handled differently and in time and future visits the dogs anxiety level would lessen. You cannot teach your dog not to be afraid if the vet from home. It takes a positive experience at the vet to do that. Good luck finding the right vet, there are a few out there!!!
Thanks everybody for your responses. Once I get back in town from work I'm definitely working on sending a letter to the vet's office, as well as filing a complaint with the BBB and state board of veterinary examiners.
