These small boats can't travel 100-200-300 miles out to sea, they use a mother ship. Find the mother ships and end of the business. period.

do a little googling- basically since the somali govt collapsed around 15-20 years ago, they have not been able to patrol their waters. due to no patrolling of intl waters off their shores, non-somalis have overfished their waters and have also dumped toxic waste that is now washing up by the barrellful onto their shores. much of this toxic waste has apparently been hauled for profit by an itlalian organized crime organization.
apparently around 90% of somali people make their living and acquire their food from the sea. now think about this- if foreign entities were dumping toxic waste in your favorite fishing hole/hunting spot and also coming in and poaching game/fish that is rightfully yours, WOULD YOU NOT TAKE UP ARMS AGAINST THEM?
I am not saying that what the skinnies are doing is right- but they are called skinnies for a reason- these people are practically starving to death while others pollute and pillage their resources.

maybe our monies would be better spent helping them patrol their own waters in a lawful way so that they don't patrol them in an unlawful way? maybe we shjould track down these commercial fisheries that overfished their waters and make them make a contribution to solving the problems? maybe we should find the folks dumping toxic waste in the somali waters and force them to make a "contribution" to the cause?

I knew some one would get around to blaming every one else but the pirates for all this. i mean they sure cant be to blame , there just poor starving people that have to steel and kill inocent people to survie. now ant that easy to understand shew, yawl right wingers need to get real here

I sure don't think that by trying to better understand what is motivating this piracy that I am "blaming everyone else but the pirates". In my post I am trying to get people to try to realize that these pirates are behaving in the same way that many who post on this very site would behave. How many times has someone started a thread about a dog shot or stolen and gotten responses that range from " I'd go straight to his house and knock some sense into him" to "nail the windows shut and pour gasoline on the house- that fella won't give you no more trouble!". If we are to be really honest about it, most on this site kinda prefer the option of a little vigilante, take it into our own hands kind of justice. Well right or wrong, the skinnies feel the same way.

Myself, I prefer rule of law- there are plenty of laws on the books already and they should be able to protect most of our interests- lets let the law enforcement agencies of the world figure these situations out. And if we are to start attacking Somalia because some Somalis are pirates is it ok for other nations to attack the United states because some of our elected/appointed officials have committed war crimes?

I don't see too many of my redneck friends going around shooting up the neighborhood to become the new warlord on the block. Somalis are responsible for the current state of affairs in their country. This needs to be dealt with in the same manner as the barbary coast way back when. You cannot talk about the rule of law to a society that has no moral compass. Truly - I guess I have not heard of any demands for things , like you say is going on , to stop. All I've heard about are demands for ransom money.

Plottluvr - If we started sinking all the pirates boats that don't have hostages on them , the ones that do won't start killing their hostages because they'll know that's the only thing keeping them alive. Trust me , they'll start dealing in a hurry.

I wont make excuses for them.I will just try to understand what it is all about-you can't solve a problem if you dont understand the underlieing contributing factors. I also wont make "excuses" for the criminal behavior that our founding fathers had to undertake to establish our nation. sometimes it is just a process people have to go through to rebuild their country.AND NO, I AM NOT comparing somali pirates overtaking merchant vessels to the men who boarded ships in the boston harbor and dumped tea.

sounds like you have some issues with folks that are dead and cant answer for them selves. we have tried the appesment card here in america, all it got us was 3000 + dead on nine Eleven.

Turns out this is exactly how the Somali pirates feel. They feel that they can't appease those who destroy their source of food. And you are right-they just want what we have- a reliable source of food.

They also have the problem that many here face- that is- lumping everyone together as it relates to wrongs committed against them. The Somalis see all merchant vessels the same- because many have wronged them, they are all guilty and a legitimate target to attack. Because many who have wronged us are Muslim, we feel it is ok to attack Muslims in general, rather than those specific ones who have wronged us.

On an interesting note- the pirate that we are holding stated that he was thrilled when he got on board the american vessel because he had always wanted to meet americans- they didn't realize apparently that the boat that they were boarding was a US ship.He holds americans in high regard. And he stated that he was happy to come to america [even as a prisoner?]. one of the photos of him shows him smiling ear to ear- he was smiling because he had never seen a camera before!

Truly,I hate to break this to you, but the U.S. is Somalia's biggest food importer. WE GIVE THEM MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF FOOD EVERY YEAR. And guess what. THEY TAX US FOR IT!!
