travis s, 14 partners instead of 14 employees won't work. most of the 14 employees will quit thinking about business at 5 oclock regardless of what they are paid. if you have ever tried to run a small business you would know it takes more than 9 to 5. it will take alot of nights and saturdays and sundays. if your time is alot more than your benefits should be alot more.

I just posted the letter as it was fowarded to me.
I do agree that if employees are treated with respect and are not talked down to they will work harder and help accomplishe the needs of the business.
I work for Baltimore City schools as a manager. All of my truck drivers that make deliveries and repairs do an awesome job ( even though they are gov. employees) the ones that didnt' are no longer there and just refilled their positions.
working for gov. we do not get bonuses at christmas or fringes of that sort. At christmas I took $$ out of my paycheck and from the sick time i cashed out and gave it to my drivers and office personel for helping me accomplish what I need to. It was'nt alot but it was something, and not a day goes by that that I do not say thank you to the employees for the job they did that day. its not always roses but We have accomplished more in three years by giving them appreciation then what they accoplished in the last 15 with the previous manger who always degraded them.
Slow days I treat them with breakfast sometimes or buy them lunch. A little appreciation goes along way.

Let me ask this.As an employee of this company,if after you got a layoff notice worded like this,if(actually when) the economy picks back up,would you go back to work for this person who just told you what he really feels about his employees?I know I wouldn't.
Plott I also work for a contractor who is basically doing work at his cost just to keep his crew together.Me,being the super, get to interact with both sides(management and employees) and know that employees that are highly regarded put out way more effort and quality than ones who are treated as though they are just another employee. We have had to lay off a few guys, good hard workers too,but feel that any one of them would come right back to work because they were treated with dignity as our employees. Now if we gave them a letter like the one above I wouldn't blame them a bit if they never came back and spread it around how this company feels about their employees.
It just burns me when employees are treated like dirt.My self and the other employees of this guy we work for often work small amounts of overtime(which over the course of a year add up) for nothing just because of the way we are treated other times.Example..Last year the owner was walking through a jobsite with me getting an update and he saw that one of the laborers had some pretty wore out bags.He didn't say anything to him,but after our meeting he had me go down to the lumber yard and buy everyone a new set of Dewalt bags.He told me he knows at laborer wages it would be a big burden on that young mans family but it wasn't right to take extra care of him and not the other guys above him.
Enough said you get the picture.

travis s, I don't read that post as a man talking down to his employees. he is explaining to them what it took on his part to provide them this good living they have been receiving, and also what will happen if the government keeps on taxing business owners to death. I have worked for other people several years and always tried to do the best job I was able. in return I feel that I was treated fairly, maybe not like I would have perferred at times but fairly none the less. I have talked to other people that have worked for the same company and all they can do is complain how they were treated. these people seem to be mistreated at every job they have had.
It does take good employers and good employees to make a business work. I have always tried to treat people like I would like to be treated. unfortunately some folks in this country can't be helped, we all know the type.
I UNDERSTAND WHERE HE IS COMING FROM.
THAT's CHANGE YOU CAN BELEIVE IT as our president would say. ITs gonna get worst.

I too think I understand where he's coming from. From the tone of the letter it seems he's complaining about taxes on profit.......but the tone may be a disguise.
At a rough 3 million profit he's already returned a portion of revenues to build the company or he's chosen to bleed it. He's keeping 2 and giving 1 to the tax man. As an employer he could expense a relative portion of that 1 million as increased wages/benefits or increased hrs. He could help stimulate the economy thru the increased purchasing power of his employees and decrease the tax man's 'check'.
The tone of the author impresses me as an employer who resents his emplyoees as much or more than the tax man. After all, he'd rather give the tax man, who does nothing for it, a million than increase wages/benefits or hrs for those that HELP him earn 'HIS' profit. Charging the tax man with giving money for nothing seems a bit hypocritical.
If the letter is a complaint....it is as much so a brag on 'HIS' bottom line and a means to soothe his own ego.
