I've talked to people who will be looking to present the idea to the PGC, but it has to be done properly, with alot of thought, facts and figures included. Along with that info, should be numbers of supporters backing this change. I'll keep you and others informed as things progress.
let me know
Let me know what I can do to help out.

I'm right there with you guys, as i mentioned to jeff, if you go to the pgc web site, and find the 10 yr bear management plan, i believe on pages 25-37 you'll find mention of hounds hunting or training as a recreational oppurtunity, or for running problem bears. I don't think we'll see a kill season, but i'd like to see a training season like N.Y. Lets toss some ideas back and forth..... jsb
Hey bearhunter, i was on the pa hunting web site and just mentioned a "cub law" and they wanted to hang me, I believe you should try to identify what you're shooting at and let the sows with cubs walk, but it seems most on that forum don't think that way.

Sam, those are my opinions exactly!...jsb
I am an AVID bear hunter, I probably see more bear in a years time than most people see in a lifetime, that being said i can guess the weight of a bear pretty accurately, but most simply cannot, last year we were carrying a bear out hunters we met along the way stated " nice bear whats he weigh 350??" I just smiled and shrugged my shoulders but i knew she was only going to go 150lbs tops. depending on feed a cub by fall could go a little over 100 or in leaner times might only weigh 50. PA at one time DID have 100 lb cub law but what they found was it was not an accurate way to judge the age of a bear... checking teeth is... any of you guy's check the teeth of your bear before ya shoot it ? me neither. That,s why it was dropped here in PA. I do not like to see small bear shot. And none of the guy's in our gang shoot bear under 100 lbs , but ... when there running through the laurel and you only get glimpses of the bear.... does it go 100lbs ,, 75lbs,, or mabye 125lbs??? who can guess then??? nobody. It's real easy to guess a bears weight if he's sittin on a limb looking down at you. I personally would love to hunt bear here in PA with them good old red hounds of mine.
Lets get back to the original subject, i'm interested in any input about a bear running season in PA. I've got some ideas but i wanna hear different angles...jsb
idea's
let's have some more idea's
Hey Jeff, i e-mailed the PGC the other day with some ideas for a training season or helping out with problem bears, i mentioned the N.Y. season and that houndsmen from PA travel to other states to run their hounds, they said its not up to the PGC, this would have to be presented to the state legislature, i'm not going to let it drop, i'm going to keep working on this. HEY i just bred my buckwheat female to cold creek bud, if you know anyone thats into redticks... to be due in about 63 days.....jsb

I was just wondering how to get a hold of are state legislature to talk to them about hunting bear with hound's, This is something I propably sould know but I don't. I don't know anybody looking for any pup's but I'll let you know if I here of anybody.
I have this same thread going on another forum Hillbilly Huntin and Hookin, and one of the guys e-mailed our local rep about this, all he got was the standard '' thanks for your input'' answer. What i need to do is locate a hunter friendly rep out in one of the central counties, and present the idea. Its going to take some thought, and be presented as professionally as possible if we expect a serious answer,,,,,i'll take any input....jsb

I have A good freind that is really good at speaking to people in a puplic office. I will talk to him and see what I can get done or see if he can talk to somebody in the legislature office for us.
I had a nice fellow send me a link to a site that might help us some in trying to get this going in the right derection.I will try to put it on here tomorrow. I looks like we got the ball rolling.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this is something that many of us are going to pursue, and I will post when that starts coming together. I would suggest that if you go for this now, don't go for just a training season, go for a short actual hunting season along with an extended training season. Why would they give us training if we can never actually hunt?
jeff
i spoke to one the guy's on the site he said get you all to speak to these people http://www.pfsc.org/contact.html
I think the possibility of an actual hound hunting season in PA is almost nil, because of the number of bears that are taken in the regular season, thats why i suggested a training season like the one started in NY, we're in the middle of a ten year bear management plan set up by the PGC, so anything like this is going to be an uphill battle, but they'll see that the interest is there if their getting input from several different groups, i'd just like to get a serious answer if the possibility exists....jsb
Al, i e-mailed the pfsc,, they'll be no help what so ever until WE get things rolling....jsb i'm gonna go the legislater route as soon as i get my computer back up--VIRUS
small bears
I live just a few miles from the Tidioute bear check station. A few years back someone brought in a bear that weighed 36 lbs.I just couldn't shoot a bear that small, my Plotts are all over 50 lbs!! If you can prove to the lawmakers and politicians in the PA govt and PGC that not only is hound hunting a good bear management tool, but that it will bring in much needed revenues and save money in the form of nuisance bear problems, we might have a chance. I would be curious to know how much money each WCO spent on gas carting those live traps around !! If I can help in any way, let me know. Rem700, I had tried to send you pics a while back, don't know if they went. Cas, I got a couple of calls from people you had given my number, thanks again, and I'll try to give you a call soon, Bill

pgc april meeting
The PA Board of Game Comissioners is having their meeting Apr 20-21 in the auditorium at their hq in Harrisburg. Doors open at 7:45 am on the 20th registration also begins then for those wanting to give 5 minutes of public testimony. Might be worth trying to present something there? I have a friend in NY that runs bear and handles nuisance problems . He is going to the NY Houndsman banquet and I'm going to find out what I can about NY's training program and how they were able to get it. Keep me posted, Bill

Yeah, Bill i am curious as to how NY's season came about. although NY at one time, had a hound running season in the adirondacks,,,sorry i didn't get your pics, i'll pm you my e-mail.
I'm working on a letter to send to the reps of all the north central counties outlining my ideas for a training and harvest season, but PA has no bear hunting organizatins, it's basically one voice asking for something they have no idea there's an interest in. They need to hear it from several different directons.
if anyone else has ideas i'd like to hear them.....jsb
You're right about one voice, maybe we should look into some help. I know the MI and WI bear hunters associations are very successful and have won in the legal system when the anti's were getting bills put onto ballots. Maybe they would lend us a hand or at least some advice on how to achieve this.

Theres also a bear hunters rights organization that may be of some help, i just gotta remember where they are. maybe i'll email the editor of BEAR HUNTER magazine, he'll know...jsb
Hey Guys, You may want to call or e-mail the U.S. Sportsmans Alliance to get some help. They have a web site or you can go to the Virginia Bear Hunters Association web site and click on links.
