Having been in Law enforcement for a few years, I prefer the Sig Sauer line. I had a Sig Sauer P220 .45, I traded it for a smaller caliber to conceal once I left the dept. I traded for a S&W .40 cal. tactical stainless, worst mistake I ever made. Sig Sauer is the most carried by law enforcement across the country and in the world, such as FBI, Secret Service,Federal Marshals and on and on. The .45 I had also had a marine coating to prevent corrosion and night sights as well. I qualified as expert during my qualifications testing in the police dept. The .45 had less recoil than othe rguns I have shot, even my .380 I shoot. I also carried a Kel Tec .40 cal. on my ankle when on duty and sometimes off duty. This was a very light weight gun, but does have more recoil. My hands are on the smaller size, but the Sig .45 fit very nice in my hands. It was even such a good gun, I qualified with it the very first time I actually got to shoot it and was scored expert with it and it was a night qualification. Which many other officers had problems with it being a night shoot. Caliber doen't matter as much as shot placement, you can do as much damage with a small caliber as with a large if you know how to shoot that certain firearm. Keep em' tight and aim for vital organs...and don't ever let them live..or they will sue you as stated above. Kill what you aim at and don't aim unless you can pull the trigger!!

For personal protection, the 9mm is good enough for me. I carry a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact. I also carry a Derringer 'type' 22 Mag in my pocket and a 25 Auto on my ankle just as bugs.

I have a Ruger P90 .45 but seldom carry it. Its big and heavy. If you carry a 45, make sure you can handle it. You get to shooting and might get out of control and hit some old lady on her way to the grocery store and you're gonna be in a lot of trouble...

PS... a 22 beats a rock any day lol...

man, if you have to carry 3 different guns for protection you might rethink some of the places you go.

If I ever have to use it on someone, I won't be trying to wound them. I have 2 clips that hold 9 bullets loaded with hollow points & if that isn't enough, I guess you'll see a fat man run.

Not just hollow points - I have a Kimber Gold Match 45 and a S&W model 29 44 mag. loaded with hydroshocks here in the house. If I'm mad enough to shoot - I want as much damage as I can create. I do like my big guns, but one of the best shooting handguns I ever had was a Browning Hi-Power 9mm. Real nice piece.

i bought myself a XD 40 several years ago and wouldnt be with out it! Love that gun, shoots anything you put in it. If I were to have a gun for concealed carry I would stick with a revolver. I would take a very close look at the new .327 Federal Magnum Round. Very impressive and not musc recoil. Remember if your first shot with a semi auto fails you have to rack another round, if you revolver fails just pull the trigger again!!

I bought a Taurus pt145 10+1 .45 acp and it is a nice carry gun. Also pretty accurate. Never had any problems with it.

This is a tough one.
I will list a few Favorties first.
Pistols,
Colt 1911, and Replicas and the Beretta, 92 are both favorites.
For the Record, I do not like the Glock, I just hate the Idea, of a Plastic Gun.

on Revolvers, I love the Single Actions, such as the Colt and Rugers, My favorite Revolver, would have to be, the Ruger Blackhawk 44 Magnum.

The Handgun that I Coonhunt with is a Ruger Single Six, I just like the feel of that gun.

I've carried a Heckler and Koch 40 cal. for the last seven years at work and I like it. Fires every time and it don't matter how tight or loose you grip, it will fire, unlike some that have been discussed here. Thirteen round mag and one in the chamber cocked and locked. A good gun, but if you're looking for a manstopper it's hard to beat a 45.

Those are what I carry (1 at a time) depending on what I am doing or where I am going. On the defense issue I have a good friend who is a former cop he was shot in the chest with a 9mm at less than 20ft he lived to tell about it, the attacker caught one from his .45 and didn't.

Pretty hard to conceal that KelTec.... Literally had a 9mm bounce of a bad guy's noodle in an ugly shootout in the county. 45 has your knockdown, but, generally, a lot of gun in your hand. Sig is definitely one of the best, but, they are so finely machined that you better keep it clean or you will be doing immediate action drills on it and that ain't good in a tight situation. The 1911 and HK are about as fine a weapon as you are going to get. I hope carrying a weapon "cocked and locked" (weapon stored w/hammer back) doesn't make you nervous. The Glock is what we call "cop proof". It can take a pounding. In the transition course several years ago I purposely didn't clean the weapon for the 1000 round course. Not one malfunction. The Sig will start malfunction at approx. 200 - 400 rounds. I like a double action and the Glock trigger pull is the same EVERYTIME you pull the trigger. Beretta is a good weapon but I'm not a fan of double/single action. The second round will sometimes catch you off guard with the light trigger. You have to be careful with a .22 or .25..... you might accidentally put your eye out.

PS. If it's for home defense a good short stroke 12 ga. with the plug pulled and loaded with double oo buck is the best thing going unless you like 'em gas fired, air cooled and belt fed like I do.

That is a frustrating mentality - just because something "looks" like an "assault weapon" does not mean it is an "assault weapon" and that a person is not to be entitled to ownership of it. Pistol grips for something as simple as a .22 were illegal through Clinton because of that. A synthetic stock, strap, pistol grip, and large magazine is not what makes something a high power killing machine.

It's like saying, the Dodge Viper is a stupidly fast car, why would anyone other than a race car driver need something like that.
The reason is because it is a law abiding person who has given no reason as to why they should not be able to own it, as they are entitled to it in their rights. Much of it is just simply a passion for the technology and what it is capable of. A person wants to take it out occasionally cause they can shoot a billion rounds per second, impressive technology. A person wants a sports car cause it can do 0-60 in 4 seconds - impressive technology.

We have an XD40, .40cal. which my husband absolutely cherished - until I bought my CZ75 P-01 9mm - The ergonomics and reputation of that gun are amazing. I couldn't ask for anything better on this gun. Especially considering the price difference of the CZ vs. Kimber, Beretta, etc. The CZ carries/conceals very well also.

LOL, who on earth told you that?? Sig does "torture tests" on random firearms from every lot of slides and frames. You can fire a Sig under water, you can bury it in the sand then pick it up and shoot it, and you can drop it in the mud..step on it, then pick it up and shoot it. It will fire and not jam while doing so. Dont believe me?..get your hands on one and try it..just hose it off when you're done playing and lube the slide with a dry lube. Nobody can put one through worse than what the QA team does to them before they leave Exeter NH. This is why they're the choice of almost all Tacticle and Law Enforcement teams through out the world.

have been a gun dealer for many yrs.... lot of excellent pieces mentioned, lot depends on needs, different for home defense than for law enforcement professionals.. often recommend the short barreled shotgun for home defense, hard to miss with, pretty scary when one pointed at an intruder, easy to learn to use... always a fan of the revolver for being dependable, course different needs dictate what works best for different situations, kinda partial to 41. mag and .44 special, the .45 always has and will always get the job done...

I watched malfunctions on the range with 2 different Sigs. They were clean when we started. You sound like a Sig saleman I watched a Glock get dropped from a 4 story firetower, thrown against the wall 3 times and then fired. The City Of Pittsburgh whooped on the demo model and it fired everytime. The only thing it experienced was a bent front post. This was after the rep drug it up the boulevard on a rope behing his corvette (said he likes plastic toys....) I carry a model 35 for duty/tactical and a 27 off. I,also, use the 35 in the combat league. Carried a 22 on duty for years and sold a 23 to get the 27. Sig is a fine tactical weapon, but, Glock is the main law enforcement choice of weapon in Pa.

Im sure its a good gun, but I just cant bring myself to buy a Plastic Gun. When I was in the Military, I really hated the M16
I wanted an M14, I just have a hang up on Plastic.

I did too until I saw the demo. When they demonstrated that weapon from the drag up the highway to the firetower to the tosses off the wall to performing with I was sold. All metal weapons carry a lot of weight.....Must have been in the USMC talking about a M-14.....

9mm is a little weak on knock down and range. 40 is better out of the two choices. Best for home defense is a dag-gum shotgun with 00 buck, but if it has to be a pistol go with the 45 model 1911

Well I guess I should have known this can of worms was to be opened when I inquired. LOL The thing is as for me this purchase is not something I want for a concealment purpose or home security purpose. It just really about going down to the gun range with some buddies and basically relieving some of lifes stresses. Fact is I like shooting guns. Spring through fall my wife, son and friends all get together and either blast clay targets or put up some targets and shoot rifles. I find shooting, same as fishing, to be very relaxing. In the winter month though it is too cold outside for us all to get together and shoot and about 25 minutes away there is an indoor target range we have all talked about starting to go to and that is the reason for my original question. Knockdown, penetration, self defense, none of really came to mind for me. I know if all I want to do is just shoot at targets then my mark II would suffice same as my 22 rifle but sometimes I just want to break out a bigger gun and fire off a couple rounds. At least for me its more about shooting with the guys, not having to shoot someone.

It is thinking like yours that will cost us our gun rights. We have the right to bear arms regardless of what shape or form. Besides the 2nd ammendment had nothing to do with hunting but the ability of the people to rise up and fight a tyrannical government trying to take away our freedom. by the way I love that Kel-Tec.
