77 dollars

77 dollars an hour is a pretty fair price. if you take into consideration the big wigs that are being paid 300,000 a year to sit at a desk and then the 40 dollars an hour to put two parts together.... that's insane. The union eletric workers (duke, or any local remc) start at 19 and top out around 26... i believe that is a little harder of a job than the auto workers with 3x's the danger... but yet i see these guys extreamly happy and almost never having money trouble... the unions had their time, but that time should be over. Where i live they have a subaru plant here, they top out at 24 dollars an hour, and i'm not seeing their employees having to take a bunch of layoff's...

I dont work there so I dont know it to be fact. I got these figures second hand from CBS news. If they "beefed" it up to look worse I dont know.

The unions have been cutting back for some time now and more at this present time. Everything and everybody has been adjusting for some time now. I personally think a lot of goverment decisions on fair trade agreements and afew other things is the blame for many of these problems we're facing today. I've seen how goverment programs in the plants have made it nearly impossible to get a job done let alone cost efficently. I'm a GM retiree after 43 years and worked at what was asked of me 5 to 7 days a week all that time. I didn't turn down any pay checks just as I didn't turn down the check the goverment recently sent to everyone. You ask for a job that pays what you need and take the money home. Of course you only take home a little more than half of it by the time all the TAXES come out.
The big 3 have been building what they could sell based on what the market place wanted. They could have built electric carts but if you and I didn't want one they wouldn't sell. Fuel went sky high and consumers demanded AND needed a change overnight. It don't change over night. We do build efficient cars but we wanted trucks until we couldn't afford to drive them. I'm not a political person and can't name facts but have always found it hard to believe foreign companys could just jump in and take off like they did without help from the goverment somehow.

They also said 2000.00 of the price you pay for each new vehicle goes for retirement pensions. They have 3 times as many people drawing retirement pensions as they have workers.

If they layoff a worker, they must pay him/her 85% of the wage they were makeing while working.

All of this is good and well , nothing wrong with living the american dream. Just dont come crying to the rest of us taxpayers that have been eaking out a humble living in other areas wanting a handout. If its a loan and there is a plan in place to pay us back, no problem. If its just a handout so they can keep paying their unemployed workers more than ive ever made in my life, forget it.

I would rather bail out the auto co's then the banks, they screw you every chance they get, big three try to offer you a good product. Of course their planning of selling the big cars and trucks with the worlds oil depleting is a little off.

I was a chemical technician for 3 years before I got layed off back in 2003. I was in charge of 30 or 40 different tanks with every kind of dangerous chemical you can think of. I mixed them, heated them, stirred them, and made new chemicals. Extremely flammable, explosive, and deadly stuff. Very dangerous job. I worked hard. It was a union Job and I was in the union. I started off at $12 and hour and ended up at $16 an hour when i got layed off back in 2003. Looks like I was in the wrong business.

I don't understand how bailing out the big 3 is going to help anybody but them( for awhile)!! I still can not afford a new car. I know alot of others that can not buy 1 either , so how is this going to work? Give me $200,000 and I would payoff my house and ALL my bills and still be able to buy a new car. That would help out EVERYONE!!

Here's an explanation of the $70+ per hour wage. I don't know if it's accurate or not, but it is an explanation. That includes wages, benefits, pensions and existing retiree benefits...so, it's a very loaded number. However, these are still very real expenses that the Big 3 pay. And they are dragging the companies down.

It must be nice to make $150,000 a year to produce a product that breaks down after 2 or 3 years. I laugh at all these people talking "buy american" "buy american". Tell you what, when "america" stops putting up "JUNK" for sale, THEN I'll buy american. Until then it's toyota for me.

The auto union is full of idiots that has screwed THEMSELVES out of a job. They shouldn't bail out a company that is stupid enough to deal with unions. I have a cousin who makes $20 hr to sweep the floors at a plant and she complains. It's just sickning to see folks making that kind of money for knowing nothing more than any other person walking down the street whine about there job. My wife and I work at an ambulance service. Both of us went to college. We both started out making $10hr and now were up to $12.25 and the county acts like you stabbed them in the back if you ask for a raise. We see things that would make most folks have nightmares and are in contact with every disease known to man but you don't see anyone at an ambulance service or any other public service making $20 hr. The auto union should crash and burn so there whiney union and there workers can get a good look at reality. Noone around here makes that kind of money except the union run places that are barely making it due to over priced labor. Toyota, Nissan, Ect can make it so LET THE REST OF THEM CRASH!

The big 3 vehicles arent really american anymore. Nafta requires a percentage to be put on vehicles as to what percentage of parts and ect.come from which country.Toyota ranked #1 accordingto NBC for american percentage. Most of the big 3 came from canada or mexico. That is not american.

I hate to see anybody loose their jobs especially when kids are involved.I drive all "american" vehicles but I am not so sure if toyota or someone would come out with a 3/4 or1 ton truck.

The media was saying that 1 out of 10 households will be negatively affected if the big 3 go down.

Stop a moment and think about that ... that hit on top of what the economy is already doing.

That is huge!

I will give the auto makers one thing they are calling their bail out a loan. I don't suspect the banks will ever repay any of what they got.

Is the bail out good? I don't know.

I do know this the standard of living today would not be what it is without unions. I remember my granfathers' stories about life at General motors before the Great Sit Down Strike. I also know what my grandparents made, what my father and uncles made, and what my sister makes today. No one I know got rich.

I believe what the real problem is that unions allowed a higher standard of living in our country, and that was o.k. before global economy became more important than U.S. economy. Now with NAFTA and global economy we are trying to equalize the standard of living globally. The problem is no one thought it through ... to equalize things that means the U.S. standard of living must go down to balance the standard of living increasing aboard.

The government switched the rules and corporations and unions are caught in the middle.

Like it or not global economy = lower standard of living in the U.S.

Our leaders wanted it and now they don't know how to deal with the consequences.

I say if the government is bailing anyone out it should be with a loan and not a complete handout.

Glad some folks are starting to see the light. I have said for 20 years there are people robbing us blind. Mostly big wigs in these companies. They get millions of dollars for the rest of their life, while the people that made them that way get a paycheck to eek out a living to pay bills.

There is still such a thing in America as being honest and fair for the good of the Country, even though it is getting more rare and rare. No one is in it for the best of everyone, just for themselves. Greed greed and more greed. What do these people want?? ALL the money?? Where does that leave the commoners like me?? No money to buy their products. Where does that leave them?? On capital hill begging for money.

I'm sorry, but piss on them. You don't need millions dollar a year salary to live I dont care what you do for a living.

Gripe at the unions all you want. The union ain't the problem. Its the folks that get millions for the rest of their lives that aint worked there in 10 years that brought them down...

Big Three

We are a Capitalistic state, if they would let the system work it would fix it self, i work in a Union shop , and the union almost put us out of business a few years back because the leaders didn’t see the light that was flashing right in front of there eyes.
the Contract will expire in July, God Help us if they don’t wake up and see what’s going on, Raw materials have jumped to an all time high in my business, increasing the cost to produce our product , we cant get materials now because of short supply’s.
our customers ask for a price cut two years ago and so that cut into our profits even more.

Guess who our custumers are ?
the big three and then some.

Thats not just talk thats the facts, i work in the automtive industrie every day and i know the Compeditiveness of the industrie and as they sayonly the strong survive in the Jungle .

I just read an article a while back that stated the opposite. Said the Japanese Cos. were making progress, but still lagged behind their American counterparts. GM has shed over 500,000 jobs since 1979 and still employs more than Honda, Toyota, and Nissan combined. It also stated that over 80% of Toyota's North American profits left our shores to be invested elsewhere. After 9/11 the US big 3 all donated vehicles and such to help with the clean up, the Jap. big 3 donated letters of condolences after enjoyig record profits

1 out of 10 that is 9 less households then what was affected by the high fuel prices over the last year. I didn't see the government give hand outs to the oil companies and tell them to start drilling to bail out the crunch the middle class and poor felt with the high fuel costs. Infact they voted no to drilling. Infact the middle class and poor who lived within there means are better off now since the economy crash then what they were before. So who are we bailing out???

A press release from Ford states as follows:

and I quote " Ford estimates that its hourly labor costwill go downfrom an average of $71.00 uder its previous contract of $71.00 for pay, benefits, and all retirement costs down to $53.00 an hour by 2010 if UAW will agree to new contract. The comparable nubers for the asian auto plants is $49.00 an hour."

As far as percentages made in america all you have to do is look at the sticker it will tell you.
