-- What do you expect out of a 9 month old!! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=239287)

Posted by HOBO on 11-18-2008 05:51 PM:

I think it depends on how much you've actually hunted them. They can't learn anything sitting on the end of a chain or in the dog pen.

If they have been messed with/hunted like they should be I expect most of mine to be running and treeing with the older dogs and to have split treed a few times with a coon sitting over them.

Do they all do this? NO.. If you do YOUR PART the majority of them should be running and treeing some by 9 months old.

It really depends on how much they've been messed with. The main thing I look for is the interest and desire to do SOMETHING.... Pups are like people, they all develop at different rates....

i think it depends on if there kenneled or running loose...if they are running loose where they are exposed to coon, i would expect them to be running and treeing some...kenneled pups seem to be 6mo. behind on training compared to pups that are free to run...

I'm helping my brother start his black n tan gyp right now shes 6 months old. after just a few times in the woods shes starting to show interest. he seemed a little discouraged after seeing what my 6 month old walker pup was doing already but i just told him I've had my pup in the woods 3 months already that makes a difference. plus early starter doesn't necessarily mean their gonna make a coondog.

smokey7, if you've got 9 mo. old pups going a mile and a half, over mountians, by itself, to tree one of the few coon that you have, put me down on the list for your next litter!

I agree Jay if you shoot a dog at 9 months old you have no business with any. You would need a whole lot of confidence in your bloodline if your gonna kill em at 9 months old. I also bet he aint spending much on them pups.

President, please let me spare you the cost of a bullet on your next 9 month old. At that age most are just getting right to start.

It's no small wonder that PETA hates us!

According to them all hunters are just vicious butchers who torture and kill the cute little cuddly coons...

Now we have our own blabbing that they kill dogs at 9 mos old if they're NOT killing and torturing those poor coon!

Maybe the answer to the pup over-population isn't putting a bullet in the head of every pup that doesn't hunt at 9 mos...

Maybe the answer is in reasonable breeding of desirable dogs and then owners who have the sense enough to let a pup be a pup before training. Not in owners who buy a young dog, keep it a few weeks and then move on to the next one because in those whole 3 wks of "training" they didn't perform! URGH!

After reading some of these posts I dont know what to think. I have a pup just turned 11months old today that has been treeing his own coon since six months old. I kept track how many coon he treed me since he turned 10months old, 17 all by his self. He started that way and I hunt that way about 95% of the time. I only hunt him 3 nights a week 3, 4 drops a night. I thought I realy had somethin but now I dont know what to expect out of him. First pup I ever started.

Read & understand your young dawg's & they'll tell ya when their ready.

My number one passion in this sport is startin pup's & since I'm kinda gimped up I've thought of starting a puppy kindergarten/day care gig for the public. I have several generation's of reference's!

Russ, from what I've seen on the posts you seem to have a way with pups. How often do you have young started dogs for sale?

Well I will just go ahead and state that if you live in thin coon and hunt in thin coon you can count on waiting past 9 months old. If a dog is running loose I can see maybe but, in a kennel no way, not here. Ive seen some fine dogs not even do it on their own till 16 months old. By 9 months old I expect mine to know his name, come when called, load, lead and show interest in coon..one night a dog might not hunt a bit and the next time you take him he might take right off there is not a magic age for this and if there is then its definately not 9 months old. In my opinion the hardest learning curve you face with a pup is knowing why you take it out and turn it loose 3-4 nights a week. Once it knows why its gravy. Here sometimes a dog has to go 1/2 a mile just to find a coon or even further..you cant expect that out of a 9 month old alone...some are just naturals...but overall expectations shouldnt be much out of a 9 month old.
