Worst ordeal I ever got in was ice fishing in michigan. It was spitting snow and I nearly froze. Oh yeah and didnt catch nothing but a cold lol. I don't mind the mountains too bad I can stay in good shape and feel better "after" the hunt lol The total worst around here is when dogs take you where its been newly logged and you have to deal with the tree tops and walk straight up too. Its bad going in but its horrible leading a dog back out. Also in those area's the coon use those tree tops to hang dogs up on them treeing...a dog that dont check a tree good will fall on a tree top treed every time. I hunt an older dog she is a good all around dog not a powerhouse competition dog but straight as they come and 95% accurate around here. I hunt most always alone and i have a young dog im working but hasnt turned on much except for at the tree so far. He has only ran one track so far. He is just now getting hunted hard. I hunted a place called golden creek not too long ago here...good lookin country and i knew there were all kinds of coon in there cause i used to live up in there. Dog treed on top of the mountain it took us 2 hours to climb that mountain and coyotes were barking all around the dogs even barked near us on the way to the dog but never was spotted. We got to the top and shined the coon and well when we went to leave we decided to go what looked like an easier way off till we got way down the mountain then it got real bad there were places we had to sit down like a slide and slide down it. Then we got to the bottom and were in a huge swamp had to wade it cause there was no climbing back up the way we came down. Ive never been so miserable my boots got wet inside and we were still a mile from the truck. lol but ya know when its all over you really do feel like you got a good workout and looked at coon and just feel good to be outta there lol

For those of you that think that all of those den trees are slick.....or the dogs run the track backwards...

mills that just dont sound like my style of hunting.I would rather through my snow shoes on and go get deep. the only cold weather hunting that we realy do is cat and coyote. but it sure is fun. once you hunt a couple times inthis cold weather your body adapts to it. of course I hate heat sow theres no way id make it down south.

We all know coon can live in trees.

IMO a dog that (consistantly) trees those den trees are most likely treeing on a tree for no other reason than it is oozing with coon piss and chit.

Posted by MikeO on 11-16-2008 07:42 PM:

i think its got a lot to do with the dog your hunting some dogs wont mess with old cold tracks.

I've hunted with guys around here that make twice the den trees i make. good or bad some dogs go till they find a track that satisfies them. I've hunted dogs that just made one or two trees a night those dogs are more likely to make den trees imo.

Cool well your welcome to come hunt while your in harlan. Nice pics. as far as the dens there are lots of them here I tree a whole lot on the outside but occasionally their on the inside.

Posted by smokey7 on 11-16-2008 11:31 PM:

I almost never go to a den tree. Very, very rare. I can't speak for other parts of the country, but down here in North Georgia. A dog that consistently trees den trees is a very poor track dog.

Elvis so much has to do with what part of the country your in. Up there where you guys are at where coons spend so much time in dens during the cold months I don't think it's a bad thing to tree lots of den trees. But down here it's a different story. Most of the misunderstandings between me and you and Oak Ridge and Jim is simply because of the fact that we hunt in two totally different worlds in regards to coon population, coon habits, Terrain, and climate.

im just curious why makeing a lot of den trees would lead you to believe they were slick, when a couple posts later you say your coon have been denned up for 2 weeks.

ELVIS when its cold like it is now.I under stand den trees with out a dought. you will hit dens. when I posted this it was late sep maybe early oct. I dont hit many dens with my dogs at that time of year. when I would go with a couple different hounds we would hit dens. and I mean alot 3 out of 4 on average. as my dog progressed and quit honnering these older dogs. she started taking the track on her own. and we would see the coon. not a den. or supposedly a den. lot of them so called den trees a squirel coudn't fit through the hole they found.

Hey Sheep,

The difference between you and elvis, and JiM, and I is that we have all been to "your country" and managed to tree coon....

You on the other hand, draw conclusions about what it's like up here.....
