Yep, you are on to part of the reason you get meds from over seas so cheap.

One of the HUGE costs of healthcare here in the US is lawyers. Other countries don't have to worry about that. There is a reason they don't have medmal like we do here, it would devastate them and they would be unable to sustain it.

That is a huge portion of the costs here that is the elephant in the room nobody wants to talk about.

That plays into the price of drugs here. Every day you seed the ads "Call 1800 BAD DRUG". Never mind the drug has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, they want to get 10 million bucks because somebody who would have died now has a limp.

Another thing is the fact that the patent only lasts 20 years, but it takes 10-15 years to get a drug through the testing/FDA approval. That means they only have 5-10 years to make enough profit to pay for that drug and the other 10 tries that failed. Of course profit is the reason most of the drug innovations come from the US.

Then add that to the fact that the gubment subsidizes the price of the drugs, in other words they send Merk a lump sum of money and Merk prices their drugs shipped to that country at X. That involuntarily helps others that buy the drugs from that country and have them shipped here. Problem is that those countries don't have the standards the US does, so that you may get the real Merk product, or some knock off made in habibs back yard. Now if you are dealing with Canada that is less likely to happen. Guatemala? Well you know.....

Well atleast we agree on some things. Most of those drugs are made by the same company and just shiped all over the world. A stent is made In India. I think the US standerds is a crock and I think US law suits are a crock too but the cost of the law suits I would be isn't 5 percent of the profet. Our huge conglomerants have gotten to much power and to greedy. I am for free interprize and you can't have it with out breaking them up and let the little guy have a chance.
Oh and government substidies. Who doesn't get them or benifet from the. The conglomerants got them to take our jobs from us and move them over seas. The farmers get them to keep them quite while they bring food in that has chemical used on it that isn't allowed here and god knows what ever else.
All kids a a day care poor and rich get fed by the goverment and most day care is paid, education, food at school. No make no mistake your goverrnment controls veerything now and the conglomerants control it.
Like the car manufacturers hollered the high wages, lawsuits was the reason things was so high. Well they get them built for two bucks an hour now and have you seen them come down on the price? Atleast before they got to were nobody had the money to buy them. They just advertised a 35,000,00 dollar truck buy one get another for a dollar. Now they have to get 100% mark up just to break even. Profet is un fair in this country and we need our monoply laws back and to hang any one that have ever searved on the corporation commission.

Rip... You know I have a lot of respect for you, so I know you won't take this the wrong way. Exactly how many patients in England are under your care?

quote:
the folks in England are proud to wait their turn in line for 2 years to get a knee replacement.
2 years? In 2007 it was average 157 days on 90%. Maybe they have fell way behind since then.

Questionnaire from england patients rate your thoughts on your visit/stay to doctor/hospital... 32% excellent, 32% very good, 22% good, 6% fair, 3% poor. (2008)

Had medical problem but did'nt see doctor because of cost...UK 4%, USA 34%. (2008)

Did not fill prescription because of cost... UK 8%, USA 39%. (2008)

Did not follow up on recommended medical treatment because of cost... UK 6%, USA 36%. (2008)

One of the HUGE costs of healthcare here in the US is lawyers.
Only thing that proves is lawyers charge to much. I'm curious as to what are your feelings on this guys thoughts that "That puts litigation costs and malpractice insurance at 1 to 1.5 percent of total medical costs." http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes....lth-care-costs/

Rip look at some of your responses... "It's deemed too expensive", "it costs too much money to keep you alive", "because it's "too expensive" so people die." You give alot of reasons why healthcare is so 'expensive'. You basically agree that the system isn't working because its too 'expensive', and the 'business' itself is causing it to be too 'expensive'.

Personally I don't care what cuba, england, guatemala, or canada healthcare is like. I don't live in any of those places. I do live in the USA and I agree with OkieDawg there is too much 'unfair' profit in it because we are talking about peoples lives. Lets just say a cardiologists treats 5 people a day x 365 days=1825 people a year at a salary of $400,000.00 a year. All the sudden out of those 1825 people, 182 lose their healthcare insurance. You think he will stand for his salary to be cut for treating fewer people?? NO. He will raise his prices on the others to make his $400,000.00 salary. I will even carry it a step further, if 1824 of those people lost their health insurance, do you think he would stand to have his salary cut?? NO. And that is EXACTLY what is wrong with healthcare. The more people that don't have healthcare insurance, the higher healthcare cost because they WILL NOT take less money than they KNOW they can get away with.
